Upgrade when your current iPhone has a specific limitation that matters to you and repair or continued use will not fix it at a sensible cost. Keep it if it remains reliable and supports the software and features you need. If battery life is the main problem, compare a model- and location-specific battery-service estimate with the net cost of replacing the phone.
Start with your exact iPhone model and software
Age alone is a poor way to judge whether an iPhone is due for replacement. Find the model and installed software version under Settings > General > About, then check whether the phone supports the iOS version and features you rely on.

Apple’s iOS 26.5 compatibility listing includes iPhone 11 families and later, and iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. That is a snapshot of compatibility, not a promise of how many future years a model will receive updates. Apple also notes that features and apps can vary by model, region, language, and carrier. Check Apple’s current iPhone compatibility list before deciding.
Identify the limitation you actually want to solve
Write down what is making the phone difficult to use. “It’s old” is not a specific problem; a failing battery, cracked display, insufficient storage, unreliable performance, camera limits, or an unavailable feature is. Naming the problem helps distinguish a repairable issue from a reason to replace the whole device.

If battery life is the main issue, compare service with replacement
Check Battery Health and symptoms
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see the device-specific information available for your iPhone. Apple explains that rechargeable batteries chemically age, and their capacity and ability to deliver peak performance can diminish. A worn battery can mean shorter time between charges or more noticeable performance issues. Apple may display the message “Your battery’s health is significantly degraded”; that message is a cue to consider service, not a universal instruction to buy a new phone. Get an exact service estimate
Battery replacement is available through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider depending on location; other service routes may also be available. The price depends on the model, coverage, and service location, so use an estimate for your own device rather than relying on a universal figure. Apple says it replaces a battery at no extra charge when capacity is below 80% for eligible covered service. Confirm your plan terms, device eligibility, and coverage before assuming that applies to you. Apple’s battery design figures are also not guarantees for an individual phone: batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; for iPhone 15 models, Apple gives a design figure of 80% at 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. Check whether a newer phone offers a feature you will use
A newer model can be worthwhile when it enables something important that your current iPhone cannot do. For example, Apple’s current Apple Intelligence page lists iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with supported newer models; eligibility and availability depend on factors including language and region. Apply the same test to other desired capabilities: identify the feature, confirm which models support it, and decide whether you will use it enough to justify the replacement cost. A longer list of new features is not itself a reason to upgrade.
Compare the real cost of keeping and replacing the phone
Compare what you would actually pay, not a new phone’s sticker price against a repair quote alone. Get the battery or other repair estimate for your exact model and location. Then check the current trade-in estimate for your phone’s model and condition, treating it as provisional until the offer is verified. - Name the practical problem: battery, damage, storage, performance, camera limitations, or feature access.
- If battery is the main concern, review Settings > Battery > Battery Health and obtain a model- and location-specific service estimate.
- Check the current trade-in estimate for your exact model and condition, and verify the offer before counting it against replacement cost.
- Upgrade if a meaningful limitation remains and the replacement’s specific benefits justify its net cost. Keep the phone if it is reliable, meets your software and feature needs, and costs less to maintain.
How long should you keep an iPhone?
There is no single useful number of years for every owner. How long to keep yours depends on whether it remains reliable, supports the software and features you need, and can be maintained at a reasonable cost. Battery design-cycle figures and today’s compatibility list provide context for a particular model; neither predicts an individual phone’s remaining useful life or guarantees future software support.
