First identify what your Go code is producing: rendering a PDF page creates a bitmap of the page, while decoding an image stream extracts an image already embedded in the PDF. Those operations are not interchangeable, and neither a clean-looking image nor missing extracted text proves that sensitive content has been securely removed.
Start by identifying the conversion operation
If your output loses text, clips content, or looks unlike the PDF viewer, check whether your code is rasterizing the whole page or decoding an embedded image. A page renderer interprets page content and draws it into an image. By contrast, pdfcpu documents RenderImage as returning a reader for a decoded image stream; that function’s description does not establish full-page rasterization.
Poppler documents page rendering to QImage through its Qt API, and its C++ page renderer accepts resolution and optional crop and rotation parameters. Those are C++ interfaces, so using them from Go requires a binding or a process boundary; the cited API documentation does not specify a Go integration. The SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf project describes a separate RenderPage capability for drawing a page to an image, alongside support it reports for text, vector drawing, shadings, masks, and raster images. That is a project capability claim, not an independent comparison.
Use a repeatable conversion-debugging sequence
- Confirm the input and target page. Open the exact PDF file your program processes and verify the page number and expected content. Keep a copy of the original separate from any redacted or rewritten output.
- Check the rendering path. Determine whether the function renders the complete page or reads a PDF image stream. If you need a page bitmap, use a documented page-rendering path rather than assuming an image-extraction function will reproduce the page.
- Set geometry explicitly. When pixels disappear, clip, or scale unexpectedly, inspect the page bounds along with x/y resolution and any crop or rotation settings. Poppler’s C++ page-renderer API exposes these as inputs; compare the same page with settings you can account for before changing redaction logic.
- Compare an independent renderer where practical. Render the same page through another available implementation and compare the page bounds, orientation, clipping, and visible content. A difference can help isolate a renderer-specific behavior, but matching images alone cannot show whether underlying PDF content was removed.
- Verify the final saved artifact. After redaction or other edits, reopen the file written to disk and inspect it rather than relying only on an in-memory result or a covered view. Check text, images, and annotations separately, as applicable to the material being removed.
Four redaction signals to inspect
These are practical diagnostic surfaces, not an official standard or a guarantee of secure redaction. Each catches a different way that content may remain available.

1. Text and content signal
Extract text from the saved PDF or inspect its page content. If the supposedly removed words or glyphs remain, the redaction did not remove that text from the checked content. A passing text check is useful, but it cannot establish that the same information is absent from image pixels or other locations in the document.
2. Image-pixel signal
Inspect any embedded image or rasterized page region that may contain the sensitive material. Text extraction can fail to find words that remain visible as pixels. The SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf project describes redaction as addressing pixels in images as well as glyphs in content streams, treating them as distinct targets.

3. Annotation signal
Inspect the PDF’s annotations, not just the rendered page. A redaction-looking mark may be an annotation placed over content rather than removal of that content. The gopdf project lists annotation removal among its described redaction behavior; do not infer from appearance alone that an annotation or the underlying page content is gone.
4. Saved-document signal
Reopen the exact saved output and check whether it still exposes the target material when rendered, extracted, or structurally inspected. A fresh screen view can hide a discrepancy between the working document and the final artifact. The gopdf project describes writing a fresh file and checking it, but its reported checks do not establish removal from every possible duplicate, attachment, metadata field, or prior revision.

Choose tools according to the job
| Approach | What the cited documentation describes | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Poppler Qt | The Poppler::Page API documents rendering a PDF page to QImage. | It is a C++ interface; Go integration and deployment need a binding or process boundary. Test fidelity on the PDFs you handle. |
| Poppler C++ page renderer | The page API documents rendering with resolution and optional crop and rotation parameters. | Useful when those rendering controls matter. The cited documentation does not establish Go integration, deployment constraints, licensing details, or universal page fidelity. |
| pdfcpu RenderImage | The API documentation describes decoding an image stream and returning a reader. | Do not treat this function description as evidence of full-page bitmap rendering. |
| SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf | The project documentation describes RenderPage and redaction behavior. | These are project-reported capabilities and tests. Reproduce them against your target PDFs and verify output with a separate renderer or extractor. |
There is no established universal winner in these sources. Compare full-page rasterization with embedded-image decoding, support for the constructs in your PDFs, resolution and geometry controls, Go integration and deployment needs, and how you will independently check the final saved file.

A structurally valid PDF is not necessarily semantically correct: the qpdf manual distinguishes structural transformations and debugging or testing options from the meaning and correctness of page content (qpdf manual). Likewise, a page that looks right does not prove that underlying text, image pixels, annotations, or other document data have been removed.

The gopdf project reports a sweep across 4,000 documents: 3,986 successful word removals, zero silent failures, and zero damaged documents. It says it attempted to remove a word from each document and used pdftotext to check whether it remained. The project does not state the year for this result; it is project-reported rather than an independent verification, and the text check does not establish removal from every other document surface.
Use the four signals to find likely failures, then judge redaction against the sensitivity of the document and the scope of your toolchain. The cited project checks do not establish legal adequacy or complete removal from every possible location in a PDF.
