JBOD means “Just a Bunch of Disks” (sometimes “Just a Bunch of Drives”): a group of disks used without configuring them as a redundant RAID array. Depending on the system, the disks may appear separately or be combined into one larger logical volume, so the term alone does not tell you how storage will be presented.
What JBOD means
Microsoft Learn defines JBOD as “a collection of hard disks that haven’t been configured to act as a redundant array” in its Exchange Server storage configuration guidance. In common usage, JBOD means disks are used without RAID redundancy; one basic arrangement exposes each disk as an independent volume.

JBOD is not one universal disk layout. Western Digital describes disks presented independently, while Apple uses the term for a concatenated set that combines smaller disks into one larger disk. Always check how a specific enclosure, controller, operating system, or storage utility implements the term.
How JBOD differs from RAID
| Configuration | How disks are presented | Redundancy | Capacity presentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| JBOD, independent disks | Each disk is available separately, as described by Western Digital. | No RAID striping, mirroring, or parity in this mode. | Each disk retains its own capacity as a separate volume. |
| JBOD, concatenated set | Several disks are combined into one logical disk, as described by Apple Support. | Concatenation does not itself provide RAID redundancy. | Smaller disks contribute to one larger logical volume. |
| RAID | Disks are configured as an array with a defined behavior. | Depends on the RAID configuration; RAID is not a single level or guarantee. | Depends on the RAID configuration. |
There is no universal JBOD-versus-RAID performance ranking established by these definitions. Performance depends on the particular configuration and workload.

What happens if a JBOD disk fails?
Do not treat JBOD as a data-protection method. In an independent-disk setup, failure of one disk can make the data on that disk unavailable. A concatenated volume may span multiple disks, so a failure can affect access to the combined volume; the exact consequence depends on the implementation. Keep backups separately, or choose a distinct storage configuration designed to provide the resiliency you need.

Why use JBOD?
- Keep disks separate: independent volumes let the operating system and user manage each disk on its own.
- Combine capacity: concatenation can present multiple smaller disks as one larger volume. Apple gives storing a file larger than any one disk as an example in its Disk Utility guide.
- Use a particular storage layout: Microsoft’s Exchange storage guidance describes an Exchange JBOD arrangement in which a database and its associated logs are stored on one disk. This is an example for that environment, not a recommendation for every user.
What to check before setting up JBOD
- Find out how the disks will appear. Check whether the enclosure or controller exposes separate disks or combines them into one volume; “JBOD” alone does not settle that question.
- Check compatibility. Verify support for the host computer, operating system, enclosure, controller, and storage software. Microsoft says an enclosure is optional for Storage Spaces and recommends verifying enclosure support in its stand-alone Storage Spaces deployment guidance.
- Confirm the controller mode for your intended setup. Microsoft’s Storage Spaces instructions recommend simple HBAs or disabling RAID functionality for that configuration. This requirement does not apply to every JBOD arrangement.
- Decide how you will protect important files. If losing data on a disk would be unacceptable, plan for backups or a separately configured resiliency system rather than relying on JBOD.
