How to Debug a Website Screenshot That Looks Different from the Browser

A practical sequence for matching browser and screenshot conditions, stabilizing Playwright comparisons, and diagnosing remaining visual differences.

First make the browser view and screenshot comparable: use the same URL and page state, browser and version, operating environment, viewport dimensions, device pixel ratio (DPR), and capture area. Then capture again. If the mismatch remains, inspect the changed region and, when it may be device-specific, verify on the actual device.

Why can the same page look different?

A screenshot is the result of a particular rendering environment and set of capture settings, not a context-free copy of a page. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Its guidance is to generate and compare screenshots in the same environment where possible (Playwright: Visual comparisons).

Differences can also come from the page state, responsive layout, pixel scale, or capture area. Align those variables before changing CSS: otherwise, a valid difference between two capture setups can look like a bug in the site.

Debug the mismatch in this order

  1. Confirm the same page and state

    Check that both images show the same URL and route, content, login or session state, and scroll position. Make sure each capture has finished rendering and shows the same page content. These checks help rule out page-state differences before investigating rendering.

  2. Match the browser and environment

    Record the browser name and version, operating system or CI/container image, whether execution is headed or headless, and relevant browser settings. If a local screenshot differs from one created in CI, rerun both in the same environment if practical. Playwright specifically warns that these environment factors can affect rendering (Visual comparisons).

  3. Match viewport, DPR, and capture area

    Set the same viewport width and height, then check which responsive breakpoint is active. In Chrome DevTools, device mode lets you set a viewport and device pixel ratio and inspect media-query behavior (Chrome DevTools: Device mode).

    DPR relates physical screen pixels to logical CSS pixels. A screenshot rendered at device scale can have more image pixels than one rendered at CSS scale even if the CSS layout is the same. Playwright documents both output scales; check the particular API you use because defaults vary by API. For example, its screenshot option documentation lists device scale as a default, while screenshot assertions document CSS scale (screenshot options; PageAssertions).

    Also compare like capture areas: a viewport-only image, a clipped element, and a full-page image are not interchangeable. Chrome DevTools and Playwright support different capture modes; select the same one for both images (Chrome DevTools: Device mode; Playwright: PageAssertions).

  4. Stabilize the capture and compare again

    For Playwright visual tests, toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots are identical before comparing the latest image with the expected one. It also supports masking elements, setting a maximum differing-pixel count or ratio, and adjusting the perceived color-difference threshold (PageAssertions).

    Use masks or tolerances only for known variable regions after inspecting the mismatch. A tolerance can keep expected variation from failing an assertion, but it does not explain why the page changed; a broad tolerance may conceal a genuine layout change.

  5. Inspect the changed region and check real hardware

    Classify the visible mismatch: text or font appearance, element position, clipping, image content, or color. This narrows what to investigate, but the documented environment and capture differences do not identify the cause of a particular page’s mismatch on their own.

    If the remaining discrepancy appears specific to a phone or tablet, test on the target device or use remote debugging. Chrome cautions that device emulation cannot reproduce every aspect of a real mobile device (Chrome DevTools: Device mode).

Use a consistent Playwright screenshot setup

For repeatable visual comparisons, keep the baseline and test runs on the same browser and environment, and explicitly set the viewport and screenshot behavior relevant to the comparison. For example:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('page.png', {
    fullPage: false,
    scale: 'css'
  });
});

This example captures the viewport at CSS-pixel scale. Use the same scale and capture mode when producing the baseline; choose fullPage: true only when the intended comparison is the full scrollable page. The exact scale option and defaults depend on the Playwright API in use (screenshot options; PageAssertions).

Troubleshoot common mismatches

Symptom Check Next step
Everything is larger or smaller, but the layout seems similar DPR and screenshot scale; CSS-scale and device-scale images can differ in pixel dimensions. Set the same scale explicitly and compare at the same output scale.
Elements wrap or shift into a different layout Viewport width and height, active responsive breakpoint, and page state. Set the same viewport and confirm both captures show the same route and content.
The bottom of the page or page length differs Viewport capture versus full-page capture, and scroll position. Use the same capture area and scroll position for both images.
Text, spacing, or colors differ between local and CI Browser version, operating system/container, headed versus headless mode, and other environment settings. Run both captures in the same environment where possible, then compare again.
A mobile screenshot still differs from the actual phone Whether the discrepancy depends on device behavior that emulation does not reproduce. Verify on the target device or use remote debugging.
A visual assertion fails intermittently Whether the page is still changing or includes known variable regions. Use Playwright’s screenshot assertion stabilization; inspect first, then mask only known dynamic areas or choose a justified tolerance.

What a screenshot comparison can and cannot establish

A matched capture setup helps distinguish a rendering mismatch from differences in page state or capture configuration. It does not, by itself, identify the underlying cause in your application. The official documentation describes sources of rendering variation and available controls, but does not quantify how often each cause occurs. Treat the difference image as evidence about where outputs diverge, then test one aligned variable at a time.
