The safest way to customize a Steam Deck is to start with SteamOS’s own controls, then use Steam Input for each game’s buttons and only add Decky Loader and CSS Loader if you want deeper Gaming Mode visual changes. Open Settings > Customization for built-in appearance options, edit a title from its Library gamepad icon for controls, and treat community themes as an optional layer that needs maintenance after SteamOS updates.
What you can change, and which tool handles it
Steam Deck customization falls into three separate jobs. SteamOS controls the system-level presentation, Steam Input controls how a particular game responds to the Deck’s buttons and sensors, and Decky Loader with CSS Loader changes the appearance of Gaming Mode. Keeping those jobs separate prevents a common mistake: installing a visual theme when what you really need is a different control layout.

| Method | Setup effort | What it changes | How easy it is to undo | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SteamOS built-in settings | Lowest; no additional software | Supported appearance options such as the screensaver and display presentation | High; switch the setting back in SteamOS | Usually limited to changes in SteamOS menus |
| Steam Input | Low to moderate; configured per game | Buttons, paddles, trackpads, gyro, and action layers for an individual title | High; keep the original layout and select it again | Layouts remain a per-game responsibility |
| Decky Loader plus CSS Loader | Moderate; adds a third-party plugin layer | Gaming Mode styling, including themes, rounded corners and other interface presentation changes | Moderate; disable or remove the theme or plugin | Higher; SteamOS updates can require compatible plugin releases or recovery |
Use the first method for a low-risk refresh, the second when a game’s controls feel wrong, and the third when you want to reskin the interface itself. You can combine them, but make one change at a time so you can identify the cause if something stops working.
Use SteamOS’s built-in customization first
Open the current appearance controls
- Enter Gaming Mode.
- Open Settings.
- Select Customization.
- Review every option shown by your SteamOS build before installing anything else.
Valve has documented a screensaver feature in this area. The exact list can differ between stable, beta and preview channels, and menu labels can change as SteamOS is updated, so use the labels on your Deck rather than relying on an older screenshot.

Configure the screensaver
If your build exposes screensaver controls under Customization, choose the available behavior and preview it before leaving the page. A screensaver affects the idle presentation of the handheld; it does not alter a game’s artwork or its control layout. If you do not see the option, check which SteamOS channel is installed and whether the Deck has completed its pending system update.
Understand High Contrast and home-screen art
Valve’s update documentation notes that background art can appear on the home screen when High Contrast is enabled. This is a presentation change, not a replacement for the Library’s game artwork. Toggle High Contrast, return to the home screen, and decide whether the stronger contrast and artwork treatment are easier to read in your lighting. If you prefer the standard presentation, turn the option off in the same settings area.
Why built-in options are the best starting point
- They require no homebrew loader or theme files.
- They are managed by SteamOS’s own settings and are less likely to break when a plugin API changes.
- They give you a known baseline for diagnosing later problems.
- They can be reversed without removing software or editing files.
Make the Library easier to scan
Steam’s Library already provides the foundation for organizing your home screen. Use its collections, favorites and installed-game views to reduce the number of titles you need to browse. A CSS Loader theme can change spacing, colors or the composition of Gaming Mode around that Library, but it does not replace Steam’s underlying Library management.

Hero images, grid artwork and logo art are content associated with games. A visual theme changes how Steam presents the interface around that content. Community artwork tools may handle those images, but their names and compatibility can change frequently. If you use one, verify that it is available for your current SteamOS and Decky versions immediately before installing it; do not assume an older guide still applies.

A practical home-screen cleanup sequence
- Use Steam’s Library tools to place frequently played games in a favorites or collection view.
- Enable or disable High Contrast and inspect the result on the actual home screen, not only in Settings.
- Only after the base layout feels usable, test a visual theme.
- Change one visual element at a time and note what you changed, so you can return to the previous presentation.
Customize controls with Steam Input
Open a game’s layout editor
Steam Support’s documented path is per-game:
- In Library, highlight the game.
- Press the A button to open game details.
- Select the gamepad icon to open control settings.
- Inspect the active layout before editing it.
- Edit the controls you need, then test them in the game.
This editor is independent of CSS Loader. A theme cannot give a game a new button mapping; use the gamepad icon and Steam Input for that.
Plan a layout before moving buttons
Start with the action that is hardest to reach in the game and map it to a control you can use without releasing the movement stick. Then check whether the change creates a conflict with an existing action. The editor can address more than the face buttons: depending on the game and active layout, you can work with paddles, trackpads, gyro input and action layers.
- Buttons: remap a frequently used command or move a function away from an awkward cluster.
- Back paddles: place a repeated action where a finger can reach it without leaving the sticks.
- Trackpads: use them for cursor-like movement, menus or games that expect mouse input.
- Gyro: add motion aiming or another gesture-driven input where the game supports it.
- Action layers: create a temporary set of bindings that appears while a chosen control is held, useful for alternate commands without losing the base layout.
Keep a rollback layout
Do not overwrite your only known-good configuration. Record which layout was active, make one logical group of changes, and keep the default or previous layout available. Steam Input is applied on a per-game basis, so a successful change in one title does not automatically improve another title. Save or apply the layout, launch the game, and test the exact situation in which you expect to use it.
Test without trapping yourself
Use a safe area such as a tutorial, pause menu or low-risk section before relying on a new mapping in a difficult encounter. Check ordinary movement, menu navigation, the most-used action and any action-layer modifier. If a button appears unresponsive, test whether the problem is the game, the layout or the physical control.

For the Deck’s on-screen keyboard, Steam Support documents the Steam + X shortcut. For a broader hardware check, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. The test suite can show whether an input is reaching Steam before you spend time rebuilding a layout.
Recover from a bad mapping
- Return to the same game’s gamepad icon in Library.
- Select the saved default or previous layout.
- Apply it and restart the game if its input state does not refresh immediately.
- If only one control is wrong, edit that binding rather than rebuilding the entire layout.
- Run the controller input test if the physical control still appears missing.
Change Gaming Mode’s look with Decky Loader and CSS Loader
Know what each component does
Decky Loader adds a plugin layer to Steam’s interface. CSS Loader is a styling engine that can be paired with Decky to reskin Gaming Mode. Decky’s project describes combinations that can provide community themes, rounded corners, custom boot screens and other presentation changes. DeckThemes describes CSS Loader as a way to customize Steam and its big-picture-style interface.
These tools affect the interface’s visual presentation; they do not replace Steam Input’s per-game control editor. If your goal is different colors, fonts, spacing, panels or home-screen composition, CSS Loader is the relevant layer. If your goal is a different action on a trigger or paddle, stay in Steam Input.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall and find themes
- Install Decky Loader using the project’s current installation instructions for your SteamOS build.
- Open Decky’s built-in store and install CSS Loader.
- Open CSS Loader and browse the available community themes.
- Install one theme at a time and preview Gaming Mode after enabling it.
- Keep a note of the previous theme state before trying another.
Theme availability and compatibility are not fixed. A theme shown in an older video may have been renamed, removed or left incompatible with a newer Steam client.

Refresh the theme list
DeckThemes documents managing themes through CSS Loader’s quick-access menu. If a newly published or updated theme does not appear, open the CSS Loader quick-access panel and use its refresh function, then check the list again. A refresh updates what CSS Loader displays; it does not guarantee that every theme will work with your current SteamOS version.
Disable a theme cleanly
- Open the Decky quick-access menu.
- Open CSS Loader.
- Disable the newest theme or the theme you most recently changed.
- Return to Gaming Mode and check whether the interface loads normally.
- Remove the theme only after confirming it is the source of the problem.
Do not stack several untested themes while troubleshooting. A single change gives you a clear rollback point and avoids confusing conflicts between style rules.

Third-party customization has a maintenance cost that built-in settings do not. The Decky Loader project warns that Decky can sometimes disappear after a SteamOS update. That does not mean every update will break every installation, but it does mean you should expect to check compatibility after a major client or operating-system change.
Before updating
- Note which Decky plugins and CSS Loader theme are active.
- Keep the default SteamOS presentation available as a baseline.
- Avoid changing several plugins immediately before an important trip or event.
- Know how to reach Decky’s controls so you can disable the newest addition quickly.
After an update
- Start Gaming Mode with the least customized presentation you can reasonably use.
- Check whether Decky Loader and CSS Loader are present.
- Re-enable themes and plugins one at a time.
- If the interface behaves oddly, disable the newest theme or plugin first and restart Steam.
- Consult the current project documentation for a release compatible with your SteamOS build rather than forcing an old plugin to load.
Keep the stable, beta and preview channel distinction in mind. An option or plugin that works on one channel may not yet be ready on another.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The screensaver or appearance option is missing
- Open Settings > Customization and scroll through the entire page.
- Confirm which SteamOS channel and version the Deck is running.
- Install any pending SteamOS update, then check the page again.
- Do not install Decky solely to reproduce a built-in option that your build may not expose yet.
High Contrast does not show the expected artwork
High Contrast is the condition Valve identifies for showing background art on the home screen. Toggle it, leave Settings and view the actual home screen. If the result differs from an older guide, account for SteamOS channel and version changes before adding a theme.
A control layout works in one game but not another
Steam Input layouts are per game. Open the other title’s Library details and gamepad icon, inspect its active layout and make the equivalent change there. Test the second title independently instead of assuming a global mapping was created.
The new layout makes a game difficult to operate
Return to that title’s control settings and select the default or previously saved layout. If the issue remains, run Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs to separate a mapping problem from a hardware-input problem.

Open CSS Loader’s quick-access menu and refresh the theme list. If it still does not appear, the theme may have been removed, renamed or become incompatible. Check the theme’s current documentation and your SteamOS channel before attempting another installation.
Gaming Mode looks broken after installing a plugin
- Disable the newest theme or plugin first.
- Restart Steam.
- Check whether Decky itself disappeared after a SteamOS update.
- Use the current Decky and CSS Loader documentation to identify a compatible release.
- Restore the default presentation before adding any other customization.
A low-risk customization workflow
- Establish a baseline: use SteamOS’s normal appearance and confirm that the controller and on-screen keyboard work.
- Adjust appearance: inspect Settings > Customization, including the screensaver and High Contrast behavior available on your build.
- Organize the Library: use Steam’s collections and favorites before changing its visual shell.
- Fix controls per title: open the gamepad icon, retain the default layout, and test one change at a time.
- Add visual theming last: install Decky Loader and CSS Loader only if the built-in presentation is not enough.
- Document the change: note the active theme and plugins so you can reverse them after an update.
- Recover conservatively: disable the newest addition, restart Steam and restore the default presentation before experimenting again.
This order keeps functional controls independent from cosmetic changes. It also gives you a usable Deck even if a community theme needs to be removed.
Which approach fits your goal?
- You want a cleaner idle screen or stronger readability: start with SteamOS Customization and High Contrast.
- You want a game to play differently: use Steam Input from that game’s Library gamepad icon.
- You want custom colors, spacing, rounded corners or other Gaming Mode styling: evaluate CSS Loader through Decky.
- You want all three: apply them in that order and keep the original Steam Input layout and default visual state available.
The result is a Steam Deck that can look personal without making every change dependent on third-party software. Built-in controls handle the safest improvements, Steam Input handles precise per-game behavior, and Decky with CSS Loader provides the broadest visual scope when you are willing to maintain it.
