On iOS 26, Apple’s built-in controls let you change icon appearance and size, add widgets, and adjust accessibility settings—though larger icons hide app names, and widget choices vary by app.
Start with the apps and information you use most
Before changing colors or adding widgets, decide what you want to find quickly. Keep frequently used apps prominent and consider which information you want to see at a glance, such as weather, reminders, or battery levels. This is a practical way to plan your layout, not a fixed rule: what belongs on the first screen depends on your routine.

Once the functional layout feels easy to scan, choose a wallpaper and icon treatment that suit your taste. A visual theme works best when it does not make important labels or information harder for you to distinguish.
Change your Home Screen icon appearance
On iOS 26, open the Home Screen, touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle, then tap Edit and Customize. Apple’s iOS 26 guide documents these appearance choices:

- Large: Enlarges icons but removes app names. This can make labels unavailable as a recognition cue, so keep standard-sized icons if you rely on names to identify apps.
- Dark: Applies a dark appearance to icons.
- Clear: Gives icons a clear appearance.
- Tinted: Applies a chosen tint. Use the color and saturation sliders to adjust it, or use the eyedropper to select a color from your wallpaper.

Add widgets that answer a useful question
Apple Support describes widgets as a way to view current information at a glance, including headlines, weather, reminders, and battery levels. Some widgets also support actions without opening their app—for example, completing a reminder or playing a podcast. The available sizes and functions depend on the app.

- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Find an app and choose one of its available widget sizes or styles.
- Add the widget, move it to the position you want, then tap Done.
Choose a widget because it answers a recurring glance question or makes a frequent action convenient. If it takes up space but adds information or functionality you do not use, remove it. For Apple’s instructions and supported widget options, see Add, edit, and remove widgets on iPhone.

A Smart Stack combines widgets. Apple says it can use factors such as time, location, and activity to surface a relevant widget, and you can swipe up or down through the stack to view its contents. This can keep several widgets together, but the changing display may not suit everyone. Try a stack and keep it if you can predictably find the information you want.

Adjust visual and motion settings for accessibility
Set visual preferences for Home Screen & App Library
Apple’s Per-App Settings can apply color, text size, and motion preferences to an app or to Home Screen & App Library. To configure them, open Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings, tap Add App, then select Home Screen & App Library. Available adjustments can depend on the iOS release and the feature being changed. See Apple’s Customize accessibility settings for specific apps on iPhone.

Try motion controls if animations distract you
Open Settings > Accessibility > Motion to find options including Reduce Motion and controls for animated images, video previews, and message effects. These settings may help if motion effects distract you or feel uncomfortable; their behavior depends on the iOS release and supported features. - Legibility: Can you read app names and widget text comfortably?
- Recognition: Do the icon appearance and size preserve the cues you use to find apps?
- Information density: Does each widget show enough useful information for the space it occupies?
- Routine: Can you locate frequent apps and complete common actions without disrupting your habits?
- Visual preference: Does the wallpaper and color treatment feel personal without making the screen harder to scan?
These are personal checks, not a promise of a measurable productivity or usability improvement. If a change makes something harder to find, undo that change rather than keeping it for the sake of a coordinated look.
