Check the exact model’s software-support policy, try its shape in your hand, and compare battery, durability and repair information. A water-resistance rating is a limited test claim, not a promise that protection will last for the life of the phone.
Start with how long you plan to keep the phone
A phone can remain physically usable after it stops receiving security updates, but that may not suit your needs. Before comparing designs, decide how many years you want to use the device, then check whether its update schedule covers that period.

Check the policy for the exact model
Update terms vary by model and can have different start dates. Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, counted from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. Listed older Pixel generations receive five years; Pixel 5a and earlier no longer receive Android version or security updates. See Google’s Pixel update policy for model-specific terms.

When comparing phones, note the eligible model and region, how the support clock starts, and whether the promised period is for OS upgrades, security updates, or both. A brand-wide assumption can leave you with less support than expected.
Judge comfort in your hand, not by screen size alone
A display diagonal does not tell you whether a phone will feel comfortable in daily use. Width, weight, thickness, edges, button placement and camera-bump shape all affect handling, and the case you intend to use changes the feel again. There is no universally best phone size or validated hand-size cutoff in the official sources cited here.
Try the exact phone and your intended case
If you can, hold the exact model and perform ordinary tasks in the grip you expect to use. Check whether you can reach the controls, how securely the edges sit in your hand, and whether the camera bump or weight affects your grip. Try the case too: it can add protection, but may also add bulk, change button access or make the phone less comfortable in a pocket.

A case is an optional, model-compatible way to add protection, not a guarantee against damage. A screen protector is another possible accessory if scratch protection matters to you; check compatibility with the exact model.
Read durability claims as separate pieces of evidence
No single rating tells you how well a phone will hold up to every accident or years of wear. Compare the available information about drops, scratches, water and dust, and battery endurance rather than treating one specification as an overall lifetime score.
Water resistance is not permanent protection
Google says Pixel water and dust resistance may diminish or be lost over time because of normal wear, repair, disassembly or damage. Google also says its phones are not drop- or tumble-proof. Those are manufacturer statements about Pixel devices; read Google’s Pixel hardware specifications for the model-specific context.

Samsung reports an IP68 rating for the Galaxy S26+ in its Product Environmental Report. Treat that as a stated rating, not a lifetime guarantee. Consider it alongside drop-resistance information and the repair options for the phone.

For covered smartphones and tablets placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025, ecodesign and energy-labelling requirements provide standardized information, including battery longevity, dust and water protection, accidental-drop resistance and repairability. The European Commission says covered devices must meet a battery-endurance requirement of at least 800 charge-discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity. This is a requirement for covered devices, not a prediction of how long any individual owner’s battery will meet their needs.
The Commission estimates that the measures could increase the average lifetime of a mid-range smartphone from 3.0 to 4.1 years. That figure is an estimate of the measures’ effect, not a promised lifespan for a particular phone. Find out what can be repaired—and for how long
A phone is easier to keep in service if its likely wear points can be repaired through a practical route. Before buying, check what parts are offered for the exact model, who is eligible to perform repairs, whether instructions and tools are available, and how long parts will remain available in your region.
For covered devices, the Commission’s summary describes critical spare parts being made available to repairers within 5–10 working days and for seven years after a model’s last placement on the EU market. The detailed scope and exceptions are set out in Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670; the summary should not be read as a guarantee that every part is available to every buyer or repairer.
Samsung describes repairability as a product-development priority and says it is expanding its US Self-Repair program. Availability, eligible models, prices, tools and repair pathways can differ by model and region, so verify the route for the phone you are considering. Samsung’s statements and program description appear in its Galaxy S25+ Product Environmental Report.

Compare phones with a practical checklist
When you have two or more candidates, compare them on the same terms rather than letting one headline feature decide:
- Comfort: width, weight, thickness, edge shape, button reach and camera bump; try the phone with the case you expect to use.
- Software longevity: OS and security-update terms, start date, eligible model and region.
- Durability: available drop, scratch, battery-cycle and ingress-protection information; treat each as a separate measure.
- Repairability: repairability information where available, parts, instructions, eligible repairers and parts-availability period.
- Ownership fit: whether the case makes the phone too bulky for your preference and whether the repair route is practical where you live.
Comfort remains personal: the official sources cited here establish no comparative comfort test or universal dimension threshold. If you cannot handle a phone before buying, use its dimensions and weight as clues, then confirm the return terms with the seller rather than assuming the screen diagonal predicts fit.
