You change the pointer in Google Chrome by installing a cursor extension from the Chrome Web Store, not through a built-in Chrome setting. Add the extension, choose a cursor design or pack in its controls, and test it on an ordinary website. The change applies to the pointer shown on webpages. Neither the Chrome Web Store listings nor Google’s documentation establish that these extensions change the system cursor in other desktop applications.
What a cursor extension changes
A cursor extension draws the pointer you select whenever Chrome renders a supported webpage. Most offer a collection of designs, and some let you upload your own image. The Custom Cursor for Chrome™ listing, for example, describes a built-in collection, user uploads, and a size adjustment in its management area (Custom Cursor for Chrome™ on the Chrome Web Store).

Because the change lives inside the browser, it does not reach every surface. Chrome’s own pages are the main exception, covered in the troubleshooting section below.
Install an extension and apply a cursor
- Open the Chrome Web Store at chromewebstore.google.com, search for “Custom Cursor for Chrome,” and open the listing.
- Review the requested permissions (see the next section), then click Add to Chrome and click Add extension in the confirmation prompt. Google’s general installation guidance for Chrome extensions is in its Chrome Help page on accessibility extensions.
- Click the puzzle-piece Extensions icon in the Chrome toolbar. Use the pin option on the extension if you want its icon always visible.
- Open the extension and choose a cursor or pack. If the extension offers a size control in its manage area, adjust it there.
- Open a regular website, such as a news site, and move the pointer over the page. If the previous cursor still appears on a tab that was already open, refresh that tab.
Check permissions before you install
Google’s help page on permissions requested by apps and extensions explains that permissions allowing access to website data can let an extension read, request, or modify information on those pages. Changing a cursor does not inherently require reading page content, so a broad site-data permission deserves a question before you click Add extension.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
- Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
- Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
- Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
- Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
- Permissions: Confirm that the access requested matches the job. If an extension asks for more than a pointer change needs, choose a different one.
- Privacy disclosure: This is a statement the developer makes on the listing. It is not an independent security audit.
- Publisher and updates: Check who published the extension, when it was last updated, and whether the listing describes its behavior clearly.
- Popularity: A large user count or a high rating does not prove an extension is safe. Google’s Chrome Web Store user data guidance says developers should explain the permissions they request and why they are needed, which is the explanation to look for on a listing.
Troubleshooting when the cursor does not change
Work through these checks in order. The restricted-page entries follow the limitations stated on the listings, which do not claim to be a complete list.
| Symptom | Check | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| No change anywhere | Open chrome://extensions and confirm the extension’s toggle is on |
The extension is enabled |
| Old cursor on a tab that was open during installation | Refresh the tab | The selected cursor appears (the listing says earlier tabs may need refreshing) |
| No change on the Chrome Web Store or the browser home page | Move to a regular website | Restricted pages are not supported, according to the Custom Cursor for Chrome™ listing |
| No change on internal Google pages | Test on a regular website | A second listing, Custom Cursor for Chrome, names internal Google pages as unsupported (Custom Cursor for Chrome listing) |
| Cursor works on one site but not another | Compare with a third regular site | Not stated in the official documentation or listings; the evidence does not establish how individual sites that apply their own cursor styles behave |

No independent study verifies how cursor extensions affect usability or accessibility, and no such claim should be made on their behalf.

Making your own cursor
If you want a cursor that is not in any store, Chrome for Developers publishes a tutorial titled “How to add a custom cursor to Chrome,” dated July 31, 2024, in which Oliver Dunk walks through building the extension. Its video description lists the topics covered: a manifest file, loading the extension, adding a cursor icon, testing, and a service worker. The description introduces the project with the sentence “I’ve created an extension, that switches the basic cursor in your browser with something more exciting.” That sentence comes from the description, not a verified transcript of the audio, so check the video before quoting it directly (Chrome for Developers tutorial on YouTube).
Building your own extension requires writing code and loading it as an unpacked extension, which is a different workflow from installing a store extension. The tutorial’s topic list is the only detail verified here.
