What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Steam’s built-in Customize, Ignore, and Not Interested controls rather than trying to retrain recommendations by browsing randomly. To remove one title, open its Store page and choose Ignore (or Not Interested where that label appears). To change an entire discovery area, open that area’s customization controls and adjust product-type, Early Access, release-status, operating-system, tag, or language filters.
These settings have different scopes. An ignored title is documented as excluded from future recommendations and featured spots, while Discovery Queue and Interactive Recommender controls affect only those surfaces. Steam’s filters narrow what you see; they are not a promise that every excluded title will vanish from direct search or every Store page.

Choose the control that matches the problem
Steam does not use one universal “block” switch. Start by identifying whether you dislike a particular game, a category of product, or the way a discovery tool is presenting results.
| Control | Best for | Scope | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ignore or Not Interested | One unwanted title | The title across Steam recommendation surfaces | Valve says the product is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots |
| Customize on the Store home page or a browse section | Removing product categories you do not want to browse | The Store area where you set it | Options include owned games, Early Access, software, downloadable content, pre-purchases, and operating-system-specific results |
| Discovery Queue customization | Changing the queue’s mix | Discovery Queue | Whether to include Early Access, unreleased titles, or titles for particular operating systems |
| Interactive Recommender exclusions | Temporarily leaving recently played games out of that recommender | Interactive Recommender | An exclusion set for that recommender; changing it does not alter the Steam-wide Ignore list |
| Search and browse filters | Finding games you do want | The current search or browse results | Tags, Steam features, operating systems, and languages |
The table’s “scope” distinction matters. A filter can change a page without recording a permanent dislike, whereas Ignore is the title-level action Valve explicitly describes as affecting future recommendations and featured placement. If you are trying to solve more than one problem, combine controls instead of expecting one setting to cover every Store surface.

For example, excluding owned games helps a browse page show purchases you have not made, while ignoring a particular game tells Steam not to select that product for future recommendations. Neither setting is a general-purpose genre blacklist.
Customize Steam Store pages before you browse
Store personalization is available from the Steam Store home page and from other Store sections. Look for the visible Customize control near the section or results you are viewing. Steam’s labels and layout can move as the Store is updated, so use the control attached to the current page rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Exclude product types and release categories
Depending on the Store section, customization can let you omit categories that are irrelevant to you. Valve documents controls for:

- Early Access products
- Software
- Downloadable content
- Pre-purchases
- Results associated with a particular operating system
These switches are useful when the problem is not one game but a stream of similar listings. For example, turning off owned games can make a discovery list more useful when you are looking for something new. Excluding software or downloadable content keeps game-oriented sections from filling with non-game products.
Apply the setting in the correct Store area
Customization is area-specific. A choice made on a home-page module may not behave like a title-level Ignore action, and a Discovery Queue setting has its own scope. If an unwanted type still appears elsewhere, open that other section’s Customize controls and check its options separately.
When a page offers several switches, change only the ones related to your goal and then review the resulting list. Product-type choices answer “what kind of listing may appear,” while Ignore answers “should this specific product be recommended.” Keeping those questions separate makes it easier to diagnose an unexpected result.
Use search filters to narrow toward desired games
Steam search and browse pages provide filters for tags, Steam features, operating systems, and languages. These are positive discovery tools: they help you find products matching selected characteristics instead of recording a permanent rejection of every game with a different characteristic.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Steam Store search or the browse page for the type of product you want.
- Open the filter controls beside the results.
- Select the tags, Steam features, operating systems, and languages that describe the games you want.
- Review the resulting list and refine the selections if the result set is still too broad.
Tags are community-facing descriptors and can be broad, overlapping, or inconsistently applied. Treat them as a way to narrow a list, not as a guaranteed genre block. If you want to avoid a specific title, use Ignore in addition to any tag or feature filters you have selected.

Hide one unwanted game with Ignore or Not Interested
For a specific title, the most direct route is its product page. Valve’s Discovery Update explains that a product can be marked as ignored to exclude it from future recommendations and featured spots.
- Open the game’s page in the Steam Store.
- Find the action labeled Ignore or Not Interested. The exact wording can vary by Store surface.
- Select the action and confirm if Steam asks you to do so.
- Return to the recommendation surface and refresh or revisit it. The ignored title should no longer be selected for future recommendations or featured placement under Valve’s documented behavior.
Use the same action when the game is already in a feed
If the title appears in the Discovery Queue or Recommendation Feed, use that item’s Ignore or Not Interested action instead of opening a separate settings page. Valve documents the action for products shown in those surfaces as well as for products found elsewhere in the Store.
Understand what Ignore does not promise
Valve’s documented promise is exclusion from future recommendations and featured spots. It is not described as a universal content block. An ignored game may still be reachable through a direct search, a link, a publisher page, a community post, or another Store context. Ignore changes recommendation selection; it does not erase the product from Steam.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

This distinction also explains why seeing an ignored game in a direct result does not necessarily mean the setting failed. The control is aimed at recommendation and featured selection, not at deleting the Store listing or preventing every possible link from opening.
Tune the Discovery Queue
The Discovery Queue is a separate discovery surface with its own customization controls. Open the queue, then open its customization options before starting or continuing the list.
Choose the release and platform categories you want
Valve documents queue controls for including or excluding:
- Early Access titles
- Unreleased titles
- Titles associated with particular operating systems
- Open the Discovery Queue from the Steam Store.
- Open the queue’s customization controls.
- Turn the relevant categories on or off.
- Save or close the controls, then continue the queue.
If one game is unacceptable, mark that individual product as ignored while it is displayed. Queue-level settings change the mix; Ignore records the title-level choice.
Do not rely on old queue counts
Valve’s historical changelist described a personalized Discovery Queue containing 12 titles, and the original feature description said it refreshed daily with new and top-selling releases. Those figures and labels come from the 2014 launch documentation. Steam’s Store interface and catalog have changed since then, so treat them as historical context rather than current guarantees.

The queue is therefore best understood as one personalized route through the Store, not a complete catalog and not a second copy of the global Ignore list. Configure its release-status and operating-system choices, then handle individual cards with Ignore when necessary.
Control the Interactive Recommender separately
The Interactive Recommender adapts to your behavior as you play or revisit games. Valve says it can exclude some recently played games from that recommender. By default, the excluded set is drawn from the global Steam Ignore list.
Exclude a recently played game only in the recommender
- Open the Interactive Recommender.
- Open its exclusion or recently played-game controls.
- Select the games you do not want considered by that recommender.
- Apply the change and continue browsing.
This setting is local to the Interactive Recommender. Toggling an exclusion inside it does not change Steam’s global Ignore setting. It is useful when a recently played game is distorting this particular recommender but you do not want to make a Steam-wide title-level choice.
Ignore a game across Steam recommendation surfaces
If the intention is to stop a title from being recommended throughout Steam, open that game’s Store page and use Ignore or Not Interested there. That is the action Valve documents for excluding a product from future recommendations and featured spots. Do not assume that excluding it only inside the Interactive Recommender has the same reach.
Why Steam keeps showing certain games
Steam automatically personalizes Store elements for each user. Valve’s Steam Visibility documentation says player preferences drive visibility and lists several inputs that can influence what appears on the front page and related surfaces:
- Games you have played
- Games on your wishlist
- Games played or wishlisted by friends
- Recommendations from friends
- Regional top sellers
- New releases and updates
- Curators you follow
Valve summarized the principle in its 2023 Steam Visibility documentation: “Steam automatically customizes elements of the store for every user,” and it lets player preferences drive visibility so recommendations remain relevant. That means an unwanted recommendation can be the result of several signals at once, not simply the last game you opened.
The Interactive Recommender also adapts as you play or revisit games, then undergoes periodic retraining that incorporates broader changes in releases and player behavior. This explains why a single visit may not immediately transform every Store module: different surfaces use different inputs and update on different schedules.

Wishlisting, following a curator, or playing a game can influence visibility, but the documented controls for removing something are still surface-specific. If a recommendation comes from a friend or a regional bestseller module, use the module’s available controls and then verify whether the title is still appearing in a recommendation surface.
What to do when an unwanted game still appears
Use this sequence to identify whether the issue is a missed setting or a normal limit of Steam’s controls.
- Check the title page. Confirm that you selected Ignore or Not Interested on the exact product page, not merely a search filter.
- Identify the surface. Note whether the game appears on the home page, in a browse section, in the Discovery Queue, in the Recommendation Feed, or in the Interactive Recommender.
- Revisit that surface’s controls. Store sections and the Discovery Queue have separate Customize options. The Interactive Recommender has its own exclusion controls.
- Refresh the page or reopen Steam. A page that was already loaded may still show its previous contents until it is refreshed.
- Test direct search separately. If the game appears in direct search but no longer in recommendations, that is consistent with Ignore’s documented scope rather than evidence that the setting failed.
- Check product variants. A base game, downloadable content item, demo, or separate edition may be a different Store product and may require its own action or filter.
If a title remains visible in a context outside recommendations or featured spots, Steam’s documentation does not promise that Ignore will remove it there. Use search filters, section-level Customize controls, or simply avoid that direct page when you need a cleaner browsing path.
When checking your result, compare like with like: a queue card should be tested in the queue, a home-page module on the home page, and a search result in search. A control can work as documented on one surface while another surface continues to show its own independently generated list.

“I never want this one game recommended again”
- Open the game’s Store page.
- Choose Ignore or Not Interested.
- If the game is currently in the Discovery Queue or Recommendation Feed, apply the same action on the displayed card if available.
- Use the Interactive Recommender’s exclusion list only if you also want to control how that specific recommender treats recently played games.
“I only want games I can play on my computer”
- Open the relevant Store browse page and its Customize controls.
- Set the operating-system options to match your system.
- Use operating-system filters in search when starting a new query.
- Review the Discovery Queue’s operating-system setting separately if the queue still contains unsuitable titles.
“I want new games, not products I already own”
- Open the Store home page or browse section you use for discovery.
- Use Customize to exclude games already owned.
- Apply the same idea to individual searches with the available filters.
- Remember that this is a browsing preference; it is not the same as marking a specific title ignored.
“I do not want Early Access or unreleased listings”
- Turn off Early Access in the relevant Store section’s Customize controls.
- In the Discovery Queue, open its own customization controls and exclude Early Access and unreleased titles.
- Apply the equivalent browse or search filters when using another Store page.
“Can I block an entire genre or tag?”
Valve documents title-level Ignore and positive tag filters, but not a universal genre or tag blacklist that removes every matching product from every Steam page. Use tags and Steam-feature filters to narrow search and browse results, and ignore individual titles that continue to appear in recommendation surfaces. For broad categories such as software, DLC, Early Access, or pre-purchases, use the relevant Store-area Customize switch.
Historical context and changing labels
Some Steam recommendation descriptions still circulate from the 2014 Discovery Update. That documentation referred to more than 1,300 new titles in nine months, more than 3,700 titles available on Steam, and a personalized queue of 12 titles. These numbers describe the Store at that time, not the current catalog or a guaranteed current queue length.
The enduring parts of that documentation are the product-level Ignore action and the idea of a personalized queue. Current controls may use different labels, appear in a different position, or expose additional filters. When instructions and the live interface differ, follow the visible control attached to the Store surface you are using, while keeping the scope distinction in mind.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLimits worth knowing before you troubleshoot
- Ignore is not a universal block. Valve documents recommendation and featured-spot exclusion, not removal from every Steam page.
- Filters are contextual. A search, Store module, Discovery Queue, and Interactive Recommender can each have separate controls.
- Tags are not perfect genre switches. They narrow results based on product metadata and may not describe every title consistently.
- Recommendation updates are not necessarily immediate. A previously loaded page can retain old cards until it refreshes, and different recommendation surfaces update independently.
- Historical descriptions are not current specifications. Queue size, refresh behavior, catalog counts, and labels from older Valve announcements should not be treated as present-day guarantees.
For most users, the reliable pattern is simple: Ignore individual games, Customize the Store section you are browsing, configure the Discovery Queue on its own page, and use Interactive Recommender exclusions only for that recommender. Combine those with search filters when you want to steer discovery toward games you actually want to see.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop Steam from recommending one specific game?
Open the game’s Store product page and choose Ignore or Not Interested. Valve says that marking a product ignored excludes it from future recommendations and featured spots. The same action can be used on a card in the Discovery Queue or Recommendation Feed.
Can I hide a whole genre from every Steam page?
Steam does not document a universal genre or tag block. Use tags and Steam-feature filters to narrow search and browse results, and use Store-area Customize controls for categories such as Early Access, software, DLC, pre-purchases, owned games, and operating-system results.
Does Steam Ignore remove a game from direct search?
Not necessarily. Valve’s documented scope is future recommendations and featured spots. An ignored title may still be reachable through direct search, links, publisher pages, community posts, or other Store contexts.
What is the difference between Discovery Queue settings and Ignore?
Discovery Queue customization changes whether Early Access, unreleased, or operating-system-specific titles are included in that queue. Ignore is a title-level action documented to affect future recommendations and featured spots, so the two controls solve different problems.
Does Interactive Recommender exclusion change my global Ignore list?
No. Excluding a recently played game inside the Interactive Recommender applies to that recommender. To ignore the title across Steam recommendation surfaces, use Ignore or Not Interested on its Store page.
Why do recommendations still reflect games I played or my friends’ activity?
Valve says Steam personalization can use played and wishlisted games, friends’ games and wishlists, friend recommendations, regional top sellers, new releases and updates, and followed curators. The Interactive Recommender also adapts to play and revisit behavior and is periodically retrained.
Are the Discovery Queue’s 12 titles and daily refresh still guaranteed?
No. Those details come from Valve’s 2014 launch documentation. Treat the 12-title count, daily refresh description, and historical catalog figures as context rather than current Store specifications.
