How to Customize Controls for Game Boy Advance Games on Nintendo Switch

You can remap Game Boy Advance controls on Nintendo Switch, but the setting is not inside an individual game. Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics uses the button assignments configured in the Switch system. Access to the library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.

While a game is running, press ZL + ZR together to open the Suspend Menu, then press X to open the User Guide and see the original GBA-to-Switch mapping. To change controls, leave the game view and use System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping.

What changes and what does not

The Switch does not provide a separate remapping page for each Game Boy Advance title. Instead, the console applies the button assignment saved for the paired controller. That means one configuration can affect other software played with the same controller until you change it again.

The User Guide is useful for checking the original arrangement before making changes. Start a GBA game, press ZL + ZR simultaneously, and press X. The guide shows how the original Game Boy Advance inputs are represented on Switch. It is a reference screen, not the place where you create a custom layout.

For the actual changes, use the console’s system-level Change Button Mapping screen. You can assign a different function to an available button or disable a button entirely. The change is stored on the Switch system rather than inside the controller, so another Switch will need its own setup.

Before you remap a GBA game

  • Confirm that Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics is available to the Nintendo Account being used. The library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
  • Pair the Joy-Con or Pro Controller you intend to use before opening the mapping page.
  • Decide whether you want a layout for handheld play, a single Joy-Con, or a full-size controller.
  • Open a game and use the User Guide to note the original mapping, especially if you may want to return to it later.

Remapping is easiest when you write down the original assignment first. The GBA library has more than the two face-button actions: shoulder inputs, Start, and Select also need to remain reachable. A comfortable arrangement for one person may feel awkward for another, so treat the layout as a personal configuration rather than a universal best setting.

How to remap the controls step by step

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers and Sensors. Nintendo’s procedural wording is: “From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.”
  3. Select Change Button Mapping.
  4. On the left side of the screen, choose the paired Joy-Con or Pro Controller you want to edit.
  5. Select Change.
  6. Select the button you want to alter, then choose the new function for that button.
  7. If you do not want that input to do anything, choose Disable.
  8. Select Back, then select Done to confirm the configuration.

After you confirm, return to the GBA library and test the arrangement in a safe part of a game. Check every essential input rather than testing only A and B: move through a menu, open a screen that uses Start or Select, and try both shoulder actions. This catches an accidental swap before it matters during play.

How to make Switch controls feel closer to a real GBA

A Game Boy Advance has a compact layout with A and B on the right, L and R on the shoulders, and Start and Select below the main action buttons. Switch controllers do not reproduce that shape exactly, so the goal is to place the most frequently used functions where your hand naturally expects them.

Put A and B on familiar face buttons

Many players find it easiest to keep the two primary GBA actions on the controller’s face-button area. If the default arrangement feels reversed or uncomfortable, assign A and B to the two face buttons you can distinguish most reliably. Check the User Guide first so you know which Switch button currently represents each GBA action.

Keep L and R on reachable shoulders

Use shoulder buttons for the GBA’s L and R functions when possible. This preserves the separation between face-button actions and shoulder actions and avoids forcing your thumb to leave the face-button cluster for every trigger input.

Separate Start and Select from system shortcuts

Place Start and Select on buttons that are easy to reach but visually and physically distinct from each other. Avoid a layout that makes you press the wrong one by habit. Keep in mind that ZL + ZR together opens the Suspend Menu while a game is running; placing important in-game actions where you can confuse them with that shortcut can make navigation error-prone.

Use a written layout for unusual assignments

If you create a one-handed or accessibility-focused arrangement, write down the new functions before testing it. A simple note such as “left face button = GBA A” and “right shoulder = GBA Start” prevents confusion when you return to the game later or switch between titles.

Supported controllers and consoles

Nintendo lists the following hardware as supported targets for button remapping:

Hardware Remapping support
Joy-Con 2 (L) Supported
Joy-Con 2 (R) Supported
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Supported
Joy-Con (L) Supported
Joy-Con (R) Supported
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Supported
Nintendo Switch Lite Its built-in buttons can be remapped

The list describes whether the console can apply button remapping; it does not measure comfort, input latency, durability, or d-pad quality. Those characteristics depend on your hands, the way you hold the system, and your personal preference.

Choosing the controller for your setup

Handheld play

For handheld sessions, the built-in controls on a Switch or Switch Lite keep the entire setup together. A single Joy-Con can also be useful when portability matters or when you prefer a smaller controller in one hand. The best assignment is the one that lets you reach A, B, L, R, Start, and Select without changing your grip repeatedly.

Docked play

For television or monitor play, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a supported remapping target and offers a full-size grip. It can be a practical choice when the smaller Joy-Con layout makes shoulder or face-button inputs difficult to reach. Nintendo’s compatibility information confirms that it can be remapped, but does not provide comparative comfort or latency testing.

Using a paired Joy-Con

A Joy-Con is useful when it is already paired and you want to avoid changing hardware. Because the mapping is selected for the particular controller shown on the left side of the Change Button Mapping screen, make sure you edit the Joy-Con you will actually hold. If two controllers are paired, selecting the wrong icon can make it appear that your change did not work.

Inputs you cannot reassign

Some controls are reserved by the system and are outside the remapping options:

  • Power cannot be reassigned.
  • Volume cannot be reassigned.
  • HOME cannot be reassigned.
  • SYNC cannot be reassigned.
  • A stick direction cannot be converted into a button input.

These restrictions matter when you are designing a compact or one-handed layout. You can rearrange supported controller buttons and disable a button, but you cannot turn a reserved system control into GBA A, B, Start, Select, L, or R, and you cannot replace a missing button function with a stick direction as though it were a digital button.

  • PRISMATIC LED LIGHTING: Customize the look of your controller to match your mood with the full color range and four lighting modes.
  • MOTION-CONTROLS: Enhance your gaming experience to play the way the developer intended.

What happens when you change consoles

The mapping is saved on the Switch system, not on the controller. If you take the same Joy-Con or Pro Controller to another Switch, the custom arrangement does not automatically follow it. Configure the controller again on the second console through the same Change Button Mapping path.

This also explains why a controller can appear to have different behavior in two locations. The hardware has not necessarily changed; each Switch may have a different saved assignment for that controller. Keep a short note of your preferred GBA layout if you regularly play on more than one console.

How to check the original mapping without changing anything

  1. Launch a Game Boy Advance title from Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics.
  2. Press ZL + ZR at the same time to open the Suspend Menu.
  3. Press X to open the User Guide.
  4. Read the GBA-to-Switch button diagram before closing the guide.

This is the quickest way to answer questions such as “Which button is GBA A?” or “Where did Start go?” without guessing from the physical labels on a modern controller. If you are about to create a custom layout, compare the guide with your planned arrangement so you change only the inputs that actually need changing.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Game Boy Advance library is unavailable

Control remapping cannot fix an access problem. If Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics is missing or locked, check the Nintendo Account and membership used on the console. The library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, so resolve that access requirement before troubleshooting button assignments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find a control menu inside the game

There is no per-game remap page for the GBA library. Use the HOME Menu path System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping. The in-game Suspend Menu and User Guide show the existing arrangement; they do not replace the system settings page.

  • Eight RGB zones with four pre-set modes for dynamic lighting combinations

The controller does not appear in the selection screen

Return to the controller-selection step and check that the Joy-Con or Pro Controller is paired. The mapping page edits the controller selected on the left side, so a controller that is not connected or a different paired controller may not appear as expected. Once the correct device is shown, choose Change and continue.

A button cannot be assigned to the function you want

Check whether the input is one of the reserved controls. Power, Volume, HOME, and SYNC cannot be reassigned, and stick-direction functionality cannot be converted into a button input. Choose a supported controller button instead, or leave that function in its original position.

The change appears not to work in the game

First verify that you selected the same controller you are holding. Then confirm the final Back and Done steps were completed. Reopen the User Guide with ZL + ZR, press X, and test the changed action against the new arrangement. If you edited a different controller or console, the game will continue using the configuration associated with the device and system you are actually using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to undo a custom layout

Open the same Change Button Mapping screen, select the affected controller, and assign each changed button back to the function recorded from the User Guide. Confirm with Back and Done. If you disabled a button, select an active function for it again rather than leaving it disabled.

A practical setup checklist

  • Open a GBA game and record the original mapping from the User Guide.
  • Choose the controller you will use most often.
  • Put A and B on face buttons that are easy to tell apart.
  • Keep L and R on accessible shoulder buttons when that feels natural.
  • Give Start and Select separate, easy-to-reach positions.
  • Avoid using reserved Power, Volume, HOME, or SYNC inputs as part of the plan.
  • Remember that a stick direction cannot substitute for a button input.
  • Apply the changes through System Settings and finish with Back, then Done.
  • Test every GBA function, not just the two main action buttons.
  • Write down the final arrangement if you use more than one Switch.

Final answer: the fastest path

To customize a Game Boy Advance game, press ZL + ZR during play and X if you need to see the original mapping. Then go to HOME Menu > System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping, select the paired controller, choose Change, assign the functions you want, and finish with Back and Done. The setup works with the supported Joy-Con and Pro Controller families, can be used on Switch Lite’s built-in controls, and remains saved to that Switch rather than traveling with the controller.
