A Selenium screenshot of the current window may already show only the browser’s viewport. Check the PNG before cropping. If the image includes more than the visible page area—such as when you used a full-page method—crop it with image-processing code using bounds verified for that browser, driver, and screenshot method.
Check what Selenium captured first
In Selenium’s Python WebDriver API, get_screenshot_as_png() returns PNG bytes and get_screenshot_as_file(filename) saves a PNG of the current window. Inspect the image’s dimensions and contents before adding a crop. If it already contains the desired viewport, no crop is needed. See the Selenium Python WebDriver API.

Window dimensions help configure the browser, but they are not a universal formula for screenshot pixel bounds. Output dimensions and scaling can vary with the browser, driver, and headed or headless setup. Selenium’s window and tab guidance documents getting and setting window dimensions; measure the actual PNG rather than treating those dimensions as crop coordinates.
Crop a verified rectangle with Python and Pillow
Install Pillow if it is not already available: python -m pip install Pillow. Capture the screenshot, inspect its dimensions, then substitute the crop edges you have verified for your output.

Pillow’s crop box is (left, top, right, bottom), measured from the image’s upper-left corner in pixels. The code is a general image-processing approach, not a Selenium-provided crop API.
Measure and validate the crop
- Record the PNG width and height and inspect the image itself.
- Determine the viewport rectangle for the exact screenshot method, browser, driver, and headed or headless configuration.
- Account for the image’s scale and origin; do not assume CSS pixels and output pixels are interchangeable.
- Open the cropped result and check that it retains the intended page content while excluding the unwanted area.
The Selenium documentation cited here does not define a single cross-browser formula for browser-chrome offsets or device-pixel scaling. Validate coordinates against the produced image and known page content.

When the screenshot is full-page
Some binding-specific APIs offer full-document captures. Selenium’s Firefox Python API exposes full-page screenshot methods; Selenium’s Ruby TakesScreenshot API documents a full_page option when supported. The Ruby page labels that module a private API that may be removed. These behaviors should not be assumed to exist across every Selenium language and browser combination. If you deliberately used a full-page method but want only the viewport, crop the resulting full-document PNG using bounds measured for that output. Confirm the origin and scale before choosing the rectangle; a viewport’s CSS dimensions alone do not establish its pixel coordinates in the full-page image.

Common crop problems and fixes
- The crop is blank or shifted: The rectangle’s origin or coordinates do not match the PNG. Inspect the source image and adjust bounds based on its actual pixel dimensions.
- The crop cuts off page content: One or more crop edges are too tight, or scaling was not accounted for. Recheck the target viewport against the captured image.
- The image already looks correct: It may already be a current-window viewport capture. Skip cropping rather than removing valid content.
- The page capture is incomplete: Wait for the needed visual state before calling Selenium’s screenshot method. The cited screenshot API documents the capture methods; it does not guarantee asynchronously rendered page content has settled.
