Clear audio with choppy video is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can come from the video encoder, the connection sending video to YouTube, YouTube’s ingest health, or playback on a viewer’s device. Audio alone cannot identify the cause. Start by finding where the stutter first appears, then use OBS and YouTube’s health indicators to choose a fix.
First find where the video becomes choppy
Check the same portion of the stream at each stage. A smooth local output with a choppy YouTube player points the investigation downstream, but does not by itself distinguish a YouTube ingest issue from viewer playback trouble.

- Check OBS preview and a local recording. If either is choppy, investigate the computer and encoding workload before changing network equipment.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health messages during the affected period.
- Compare playback. Check the live player or processed archive on more than one device and network. If only one viewer has trouble, their playback connection or device may be involved; it does not establish a fault in the outgoing stream.
- Compare another streaming service only if useful. OBS suggests testing another service as one way to help distinguish a service-specific problem from a broader connection issue.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement like the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event. For a 24/7 channel, do this during a representative test rather than relying on a brief static scene.

Read the encoder and YouTube health signals
OBS dropped frames and connection indicator
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while the issue occurs. OBS says a rising dropped-frame count together with a yellow or red connection indicator indicates an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That supports a connection-capacity problem; clear audio does not rule one out.

YouTube stream-health messages
Use the message shown in Live Control Room rather than inferring a cause from the appearance of the player. YouTube’s health documentation names conditions including bitrateHigh, bitrateLow, frameRateHigh, gopSizeLong, videoCodec and videoIngestionStarved. YouTube defines the last as insufficient incoming video to maintain smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. These are distinct from audio health categories.
A clear audio track therefore does not prove the video ingest path or viewer playback is healthy. Match the warning to the setting or stage it identifies before changing several things at once.

Check the video settings against YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. The rates below are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a different bitrate must stutter or that these values will fit every internet connection.

For live ingest, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its health documentation notes that an overly long keyframe interval can cause buffering.

Check that the encoder’s selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and keyframe frequency match your intended stream and any Live Control Room warning. A bitrate that is suitable on paper can still exceed the stable upload capacity available to the encoder.
If the evidence points to the outgoing connection
Measure stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak
YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection and testing upload bitrate. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when reducing bitrate. That is OBS guidance, not a universal YouTube target: use sustained capacity and leave room for variation rather than treating a one-time speed-test maximum as dependable.

If OBS reports connection-related dropped frames, lower the video bitrate in a controlled step and monitor whether the counter and stream health improve. Lower bitrate can reduce image quality. OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate when a connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and may reduce quality.

- If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS warns Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A known-good cable is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed cure.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or security program, or bundled network-prioritization/optimizer software is interfering. Review network drivers as well.
- If appropriate, restart the modem and router, then repeat the same representative test.
- OBS suggests trying another ingest server. If the problem persists after these checks, contact your ISP before replacing network hardware.
OBS identifies cables and other network equipment as possible fault points, but the symptom alone is not evidence that a new router, encoder or cable is needed.

Why a 24/7 kids’ stream needs a representative test
Long-running playback can reveal intermittent drops that a short check misses. Test with the kind of moving video and audio the channel will actually play, monitor OBS statistics and YouTube stream health while it runs, and note when warnings and stutter begin.
