There is no established universal portfolio-thumbnail size for Indian freelancers: follow the destination’s current dimensions and file-format requirements. Figma’s 1920 × 1080 (16:9) recommendation applies to Figma file thumbnails, not every public portfolio.
Choose a view that tells the project’s story
A thumbnail is a small preview, not a shrunken record of every page. Start with the homepage hero or another distinctive screen that helps a prospective client recognize the project quickly. A focused crop usually serves that purpose better than compressing a long page until its text and interface become unreadable.

- Pick one strong focal point, such as a hero image, product screen, or distinctive layout.
- Capture a state that represents the finished work and has important elements visible.
- Keep the image faithful to the website or approved design preview. Add a browser or device frame only if it helps explain the presentation.
Capture the website or design preview
For a live site, open the relevant page in a browser at the viewport you want to show. Wait for the hero, fonts, images, and other important elements to render, then capture the screen. For a design preview, use the approved frame or artboard that best represents the work.

Before composing the thumbnail, check that the capture shows the intended page state: menus should be in the desired state, no loading indicator should obscure the design, and any visible cookie or consent notice should not cover the focal point. If you need a full-page capture, use it only when the result remains legible at the final thumbnail size; otherwise, use a focused viewport capture.

Compose and export for the actual destination
- Find the destination’s specifications. Check the portfolio service or page where the image will be uploaded for its required or recommended dimensions, aspect ratio, and file format. Requirements can differ by destination, and no India-specific upload standard is established here.
- Create a frame at those dimensions. Put the website screenshot inside it and crop around the focal point. Leave enough room for any project label or background you need, but avoid adding decoration that competes with the site.
- Preview at display size. Reduce the composition to the size at which visitors will actually see it. Confirm that the focal point is clear and any label remains legible. Adjust the crop if it feels accidental or cuts off important content.
- Export to the required dimensions and format. Follow the destination’s stated file specifications, then inspect the exported asset once more at its intended display size.
When to use Figma or Canva
Figma: a custom thumbnail for a Figma design file
Figma’s custom-thumbnail feature is for the preview shown for a design file, not a universal public-portfolio sizing rule. Figma says anyone with edit access can set a custom thumbnail, but only a frame can be selected. Select the frame, right-click it, and choose Set as thumbnail. Figma recommends dimensions of 1920 × 1080 (16:9) to help avoid awkward cropping; the selected frame is scaled to fill the thumbnail, and its displayed dimensions can vary. See Figma’s custom-thumbnail instructions.
Canva: a quick static mockup
Canva lists a website mockup generator and says you can upload JPG or PNG artwork. It is one possible route for placing a screenshot in a static website or device mockup; it is not required. See Canva’s website mockup page.

Other editors: more control over composition
A raster or vector editor can also place the capture in a destination-sized frame and give you control over the crop, label, and background. Choose based on the result you need: a Figma file preview, a quick template-style mockup, or precise layer and crop control. There is no basis here for ranking these editors by output quality or speed.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the URL to the page you want to capture. The response is an image, so check the resulting file and crop it to the dimensions your portfolio destination requires. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Common thumbnail problems and fixes
- The design looks too small: You may have captured too much of the page. Capture a focused screen or crop more tightly around one visual focal point.
- The thumbnail cuts off the subject: Check the destination’s aspect ratio and preview the image at display size. Reposition the capture within the frame rather than assuming the platform will preserve the entire image.
- The thumbnail looks blurry: Check the exported file at its final size and make sure you did not enlarge a small capture to fill a much larger frame. Capture at a suitable viewport and export at the destination’s required dimensions.
- A popup or loading state covers the page: Wait for the intended content to render and dismiss or otherwise handle the overlay before capturing. If using ScreenshotNeo, its cleanup options can remove supported consent banners, popups, and chat widgets; the service identifies failed or blocked captures in its response headers.
- The upload is rejected: Recheck the portfolio service’s current dimension and format requirements, then export accordingly. A Figma thumbnail recommendation does not establish another platform’s upload rules.
