Await page.screenshot() and keep its returned value: it is already a Node.js Buffer. Leave out the path option to keep the screenshot in memory instead of saving it to disk.
Get the screenshot buffer
const screenshotBuffer = await page.screenshot();This assumes page is an existing Playwright Page. In the Node.js API, page.screenshot() returns a Promise<Buffer>; awaiting it gives you the image bytes. See the official Playwright Page API reference.
For example, with a page that has already been opened and navigated:

Choose the image format and quality
PNG is the default. You can request JPEG or WebP with type. The quality option accepts values from 0 to 100 and applies only to JPEG and WebP—not PNG. JPEG defaults to quality 80; WebP defaults to 100, which the API describes as lossless. Lower WebP quality values are lossy.

Capture a different area or pixel scale
Full page
By default, the screenshot covers the page viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page:

Use clip to capture a specific rectangle. Its x and y coordinates locate the rectangle, while width and height set its size:

The scale option controls output resolution. 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; 'device' uses device pixels and is the documented default. Device-pixel output can be larger on high-DPI devices.

- The screenshot was written to disk unexpectedly: check whether you passed
pathdirectly or through an options object. Omit it for an in-memory-only result. - The screenshot is larger than expected: device-pixel scaling is the default and can produce more pixels on high-DPI devices. Try
scale: 'css'if one pixel per CSS pixel suits your use case. - The image is cut off: the default capture is the viewport. Use
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page, or adjust thecliprectangle. - The format or quality setting has no effect: confirm that
typeis'jpeg'or'webp'when settingquality; quality does not apply to PNG. - An option is unavailable in an older installation: consult the API reference for the installed Playwright version. The current reference marks some options as added in later versions, so availability can vary.
