Build thumbnails around the directory card that will display them: choose its aspect ratio and responsive sizes, then capture either a whole page or a specific page element with a repeatable browser workflow. Crop for recognition, keep the presentation consistent, and give informative images useful alt text. There is no verified universal pixel size for university resource directories, so derive dimensions from your own layout.
Plan the thumbnail around the directory card
Before capturing anything, inspect the resource directory in its actual layout. Record the card’s image area, aspect ratio, rendered width at each responsive breakpoint, and whether the image needs to show a whole page or only a representative region. Use those measurements to determine your export dimensions; the available guidance establishes no universal pixel specification for university directories.

Decide what the image should help a visitor recognize: the destination’s overall page, a distinctive interface, or a relevant section. Make that choice consistently across the directory. A thumbnail is a preview, not a substitute for the resource name or link.

Choose a page capture or an element capture
Puppeteer documents both page screenshots and screenshots of a selected element. A page capture preserves broader context, while an element capture gives more control over the specific region shown. The right choice depends on how much context readers need, how consistent the source sites are, how much cropping control you need, and the effort required to handle dynamic pages. There is no published benchmark establishing one method as best for every directory.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture the page when the full-page composition helps identify the destination or when source layouts vary too much for a reliable shared element selector.
- Capture an element when a stable, distinctive page region communicates the resource more clearly than a full-page view.
Puppeteer’s documented screenshot workflow is at Puppeteer: Screenshots.
Create repeatable captures with Puppeteer
Use a consistent viewport and wait for the page state you intend to represent. The example below captures a whole page after navigation and saves it as a PNG. Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer, save this as thumbnail.js, and run node thumbnail.js.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
async function main() {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
});
await page.goto('https://example.edu/resource', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000,
});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'resource-thumbnail.png',
fullPage: true,
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
main().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Replace the example URL with a page your directory links to. The fixed viewport makes the browser’s initial layout repeatable; fullPage: true captures beyond the viewport. If the card should show only the initial viewport, omit fullPage or set it to false.

When a useful region has a stable CSS selector, wait for it and use Puppeteer’s element screenshot method in place of the page screenshot:
Rank #2
const selector = 'main .resource-header';
await page.waitForSelector(selector, { timeout: 15000 });
const element = await page.$(selector);
if (!element) throw new Error(`Element not found: ${selector}`);
await element.screenshot({ path: 'resource-thumbnail.png' });
Selectors are site-specific. Check them against each destination and decide how to handle pages where the element is absent or changes. A single selector is unlikely to fit unrelated websites.
Settle dynamic content deliberately
The example waits for networkidle2, but external sites can keep network activity open or load important content later. If navigation times out, use a more suitable navigation condition such as domcontentloaded, then wait for a specific visible selector or a deliberate short delay before capture. Choose the wait strategy based on the content that must appear; no wait setting guarantees identical rendering across all sites.
Crop, scale, and review the result
Google’s image guidance favors images that are relevant and representative of the destination, discourages generic logos and extreme aspect ratios, and recommends high resolution where possible. Its style guidance also recommends cropping screenshots to the relevant information and keeping their presentation consistent. Apply those principles to the directory’s own card ratio rather than adopting a fixed size without reference to the layout.

- Keep the crop and visual treatment consistent across cards, while allowing different sites to show the region that best represents them.
- Export versions suited to the actual responsive card sizes when one image would be too small or poorly framed at some layouts.
- Review each image at its rendered card size. Confirm it is legible, does not obscure or misrepresent the destination, and remains useful alongside the resource title.

Write alt text that works with the link
For an informative thumbnail, provide concise alternative text describing the resource or the useful context visible in the image. Avoid merely repeating adjacent link text if that would add no information. If the image is decorative and contributes nothing beyond the nearby resource name and link, use empty alt text (alt="").
Check the image and its alternative text in the surrounding card: together, they should identify the destination without implying that the screenshot itself is the resource. Google’s guidance distinguishes descriptive alternatives for informative images from empty alternatives for decorative ones; it is not a determination that a particular directory meets an accessibility standard.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot with one GET request. Its API accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Install no browser automation code for this call; replace the example URL with a directory destination and set your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Check local requirements before automating
The appropriate workflow depends on details not specified for every institution. Before producing thumbnails at scale, confirm whether destination pages require authentication, whether your institution has rights to reproduce their imagery, what the CMS accepts, and how often captures should be refreshed. Treat captures as previews of pages that can change, and define a local review and refresh process rather than assuming a screenshot remains accurate indefinitely.
