Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a portfolio thumbnail that represents the first view of a website on a desktop, capture the browser viewport—not the full page. Set a deliberate desktop width and height, use the same dimensions for each project, and choose full-page capture only when your portfolio asks for a tall image of the entire site. You can do this manually in Chrome DevTools or automate repeatable captures with Playwright.
Choose the capture area before you take the screenshot
“Desktop size” means the page is rendered in a desktop-sized browser viewport. It does not specify one universal pixel width and height: follow your portfolio’s image requirements when available. If none are given, choose a desktop viewport that shows the intended first impression and keep it consistent across projects.

| Capture type | Use it for | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | A standard project card or thumbnail meant to resemble opening the page on desktop | The visible browser page area at the current scroll position |
| Full page | A portfolio format or case study that explicitly requests the whole page | Content beyond the current viewport, producing a taller image |
| Element | A specific section or component, rather than the entire site | Only the selected page element |
Chrome DevTools offers viewport and full-size capture; Playwright can capture viewport, full page, or a selected element. Chrome DevTools Device Mode documentation and Playwright’s screenshot guide describe these options.
Capture a desktop thumbnail manually in Chrome
- Open the website in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode. If Chrome is emulating a phone or tablet, open the Device Type menu and choose Desktop. Chrome’s Device Type controls whether the page renders as a mobile or desktop viewport.
- Set the viewport width and height for the desktop presentation you want to show. Use the portfolio’s stated image dimensions if it provides them; otherwise, choose a suitable size and use it consistently for the rest of your projects.
- Open the Device Mode options menu. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot if you need the entire page.
- Inspect the downloaded image before uploading it. Check that it shows the intended page and scroll position, that key content is visible, and that the image does not include browser controls or an unintended device frame.
Chrome’s current Device Mode instructions explain the desktop rendering and screenshot controls in its Device Mode documentation.

Automate consistent captures with Playwright
Use Playwright when you need to capture several project pages with the same viewport or repeat the process later. This runnable Node.js example navigates to a site and saves the visible viewport as a PNG. Install Playwright first with npm init -y and npm install playwright; then save the code as capture.mjs and run node capture.mjs.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
});
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'portfolio-thumbnail.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The 1440 × 900 viewport in this example is a practical starting point, not a universal portfolio requirement. Replace it with the dimensions your portfolio requests, or choose a consistent size that fits the intended desktop preview. The default screenshot captures the visible page area; use fullPage: true when the whole scrollable page is needed:

await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'portfolio-header.png' });
Playwright documents the viewport, full-page, and element forms in its screenshot guide. Its screenshot reference also covers PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and the scale option: CSS-pixel sizing is the default, while device scale uses the device pixel ratio. Choose the output format and scale based on the resolution and file type your portfolio accepts.

ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot or PDF with one GET request. Its API accepts PNG, JPEG, or WebP output; use your access key and set the URL to the page you want to capture. For the standard desktop viewport thumbnail, specify the desired viewport using the API’s documented options.
Example cURL request (replace the URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and capture parameters. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Check quality, consistency, and file size
- Match the site’s presentation: confirm desktop rendering is selected and the viewport dimensions suit the project’s intended preview.
- Standardize across projects: use identical viewport dimensions and capture scope so thumbnails can be compared fairly in a grid.
- Choose scope deliberately: a viewport image is usually a better conventional thumbnail; full-page captures can be exceptionally tall, and element captures can omit surrounding context.
- Verify what appears: make sure the page has loaded, the desired content is visible, and no browser chrome or unwanted emulated frame appears in the saved image.
- Balance resolution and weight: higher output resolution can produce a larger image file. Use the portfolio’s accepted format and size guidance; Playwright’s scale setting determines CSS-pixel versus device-pixel output.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The result looks like a phone or tablet
In Chrome, switch Device Mode’s Device Type to Desktop and set the intended viewport. In Playwright, create the page or context with the desktop viewport dimensions you chose.

The image is too tall for a thumbnail
You likely captured the full page. In Chrome, select Capture screenshot, not Capture a full size screenshot. In Playwright, omit fullPage: true.
The screenshot misses important content
For a viewport capture, content below the fold is not included. Adjust the viewport height or scroll to the section you want before capturing. If the portfolio calls for the whole page, use full-page capture instead.

Different project images do not line up
Check that each capture uses the same viewport dimensions, device mode, capture scope, and output scale. A viewport image and a full-page image will not have matching proportions.
The automated capture appears incomplete
Verify that the target URL loads in the browser and that the chosen wait condition is appropriate for the page. The example waits for network activity to settle; pages that keep background requests open may need a different wait strategy. Review the result image before submission rather than assuming navigation alone means the desired content is ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a portfolio thumbnail show the whole website?
Usually not for a standard project tile: capture the desktop viewport. Use a full-page image when the portfolio format specifically requests the entire page.
What desktop dimensions should I use?
Use the portfolio’s stated image specifications. If it gives none, choose a desktop viewport appropriate to the design and keep the same width and height across projects; the available documentation does not establish one universal size.
Can Playwright capture only a website section?
Yes. Take a screenshot from a locator, such as page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'portfolio-header.png' }).
