Start with the size and crop of the website card where the image will appear, then make a web-ready copy for that space while keeping the full-resolution original. Preview it on desktop and mobile, and give the image useful alternative text.
1. Choose the right source photo
Use a photo you own or have permission to use, and keep the original file as your master. A strong thumbnail should still make the property or its most important feature recognizable when displayed small. Choose a clear, well-lit image; avoid a frame whose subject will disappear when cropped.

For a property listing, a logical sequence can begin with an exterior hero image, followed by living areas and other important spaces. That is listing guidance from realestate.com.au, not a rule that every portfolio must follow: realestate.com.au image and video requirements.

2. Find the thumbnail’s actual dimensions and crop
Inspect the portfolio page or website builder to learn the image container’s rendered width, height, and crop behavior. A card may preserve the image’s full aspect ratio, or fill a fixed-size frame by cropping it. If it crops, identify the safe area: keep the house, room, or feature you want viewers to notice away from edges likely to be cut off.

Do not assume that a portal’s requirements are a universal portfolio standard. For example, realestate.com.au recommends 2000 × 1500 pixels at 4:3 for listing images. Rightmove recommends a 3:2 upload ratio and gives separate sizes for its summary and detail views. These rules concern their respective services, not every agent website.

3. Crop and resize a derivative
Make a copy of the master image for the target card rather than overwriting the original. Crop to the container’s aspect ratio if the design calls for a fixed frame, then resize to dimensions appropriate for the website’s display and image-delivery setup. Check whether your builder automatically creates responsive image renditions before making several manual copies. Adobe Portfolio, for example, generates renditions at different widths, preserves aspect ratio, and selects a size based on the visitor’s screen and device resolution. Its documentation says generated renditions can be up to 3840 pixels wide; that is Adobe Portfolio guidance, not a general thumbnail requirement.

When resizing, judge the result at the actual on-page display size. DPI metadata alone does not determine how large an image appears in a browser; the page layout and pixel dimensions control the rendered image size.

Keep the subject legible
- Preview the crop at the thumbnail’s real size, not only in an enlarged editing view.
- Check that the property’s defining feature remains visible after cropping.
- Review both narrow and wide layouts, since a responsive design may change the frame or crop.
4. Export and check the file
Export an optimized RGB/sRGB image in a format accepted by your site. Use enough compression to reduce file weight without making important details visibly poor. There is no compression setting or file size that guarantees a particular page-speed score.
Limits are platform- and route-specific. Adobe Portfolio recommends keeping thumbnails and small images under 500 KB for best performance. realestate.com.au’s manual Agent Admin instructions say files must be under 2.5 MB, while its general listing requirements allow up to 20 MB per image. These figures are not interchangeable. Adobe Portfolio’s recommendations and rendition behavior are documented in its image renditions guidance and best-performance recommendations.

5. Write contextual alt text
Alternative text should explain the useful information in the image in the context of its page. For example, if a portfolio card introduces a notable feature, alt text could read: “Sunlit kitchen with a long island in the Cedar Street home.” Avoid keyword strings and claims the image does not establish. W3C’s guidance is that informative images need a short text alternative conveying essential information; decorative images should use alt=""; and an image that acts as a link or button should describe its function. Review the finished card on phone and desktop. Confirm that the crop, subject, and image quality work at the size visitors will actually see, and that the file loads as expected. If the same photo will also go to a listing portal, check that portal’s current restrictions separately. For example, realestate.com.au prohibits text overlays such as “Sold” or “Under Offer,” contact details, excessive branding, and collages in listing photos; those are platform-specific rules, not universal portfolio restrictions.

Should I upload a thumbnail at 72 DPI?
DPI metadata does not set the image’s browser display size; pixel dimensions and the website layout do.
Can I use the same thumbnail on every property portal?
Not necessarily. Portals can specify different aspect ratios, pixel dimensions, file limits, and content rules, so check each destination’s current requirements.
