To make website thumbnails for a portfolio on GitHub Pages, capture a representative view of each project, crop and optimize it for the size of your portfolio cards, save it in your repository, and reference it with a correct image path and useful alt text. The workflow is the same in India as elsewhere; no India-specific GitHub Pages thumbnail requirement was established. The key deployment detail is whether your site is a user site or a project site, because project-site asset paths include the repository name.
1. Capture a representative view of each project
Open the project at the viewport size you want its thumbnail to represent. Use your browser or operating system’s screenshot feature, then crop to the part of the page that helps someone recognize the project: for example, its main interface, visual identity, or central content. A thumbnail is a preview, not a substitute for visiting the project.

For a portfolio card, a cropped viewport is often easier to recognize at small sizes than a full-page capture. Compare both against your actual card layout: choose the one that remains legible, quickly identifies the project, has a manageable file size, and looks consistent with the other cards. There is no universal card dimension prescribed by the GitHub documentation cited here.

2. Prepare and name the image
Crop and export the image to fit the dimensions your portfolio design actually displays. Check it at that rendered size: small text may become unreadable, while an overly wide crop may obscure the project’s most recognizable feature. Use a descriptive filename tied to the project, such as weather-dashboard.png, and keep images in a predictable directory such as assets/thumbnails/.
#1 Best Overall
GitHub’s contributor guidance for screenshots in procedural documentation recommends PNG, static images rather than GIFs, 144 dpi, 750–1000 pixels wide for full-column images, and a file size of 250 KB or less. Those are recommendations for GitHub documentation screenshots, not mandatory dimensions or limits for portfolio cards. Adapt the export to your layout and check that the image remains crisp without making the page unnecessarily heavy. The guidance also calls for alt text that describes the image and any highlighting; procedural instructions should include their essential information in text rather than relying only on a screenshot. 3. Add the thumbnail to your portfolio
GitHub Pages publishes static site files, so a thumbnail can be committed as an ordinary image asset and referenced from your HTML. For example, if the file is at assets/thumbnails/weather-dashboard.png relative to the HTML file:
<article class="project-card">
<a href="https://example.com/weather-dashboard">
<img
src="assets/thumbnails/weather-dashboard.png"
alt="Weather dashboard showing a weekly forecast and current conditions"
loading="lazy"
>
<h2>Weather dashboard</h2>
</a>
<p>A responsive forecast interface built for quick local updates.</p>
</article>
Replace the example project URL and description with your real project details. The linked text and description make the project understandable even if the image does not load. Write alt text for the useful content of the image rather than repeating the surrounding heading; if the image is purely decorative and conveys no additional information, use an empty alt attribute (alt="").
Use the right path for your Pages site
GitHub Pages can publish a user or organization site, or a project site. User and organization sites commonly use a host such as username.github.io. A project site is served under the account host and repository path, for example username.github.io/repository-name/. That difference matters if you use root-relative image paths such as /assets/thumbnails/example.png: on a project site, that path points to the host root, not necessarily to the project’s asset directory.

Use a path relative to the page when appropriate, or configure the correct base URL in your site generator. Check the generated HTML and deployed image URL for the site type you actually use. GitHub’s Pages overview and quickstart explain the hosting model and site setup.
4. Commit, publish, and verify the result
- Add the image file and the HTML or source-page change to your repository.
- Commit and push the changes to the branch and directory configured for Pages, or trigger the applicable GitHub Actions workflow if your site uses one.
- Wait for the deployment, then open the live portfolio and inspect each thumbnail at the card’s actual size.
- Test a narrow viewport and confirm that crops, card layout, and image paths still work.
- If an image is missing, open its URL directly in the browser and compare that URL with the repository path and site base URL.
GitHub’s Pages quickstart says a push may take up to 10 minutes to publish; verify the live page rather than assuming the deployment is immediate. GitHub Pages quickstart.
5. Troubleshoot common problems
- Image shows a broken icon: Check capitalization and spelling in the filename, confirm the asset was committed, and verify the URL requested by the live page. Paths that work locally can fail on deployment if their case differs.
- Image is missing only on a project site: Check whether the URL omits the repository path or whether a root-relative URL points to the account host root. Use the project’s correct base URL or a suitable relative path.
- Thumbnail looks blurry: Export at an adequate pixel size for the displayed card and account for high-density screens. Avoid enlarging a small capture beyond its original detail.
- Text is unreadable in the card: Crop to a more recognizable area or adjust the design so the thumbnail is larger. Do not assume a full-page capture will communicate well when reduced.
- Page is slow to load: Reduce unnecessary image dimensions or file weight while preserving sufficient clarity; use a static image format suited to the content and test the resulting page.
- Changes have not appeared: Confirm Pages is configured to publish the branch or workflow you changed, allow time for publication, and inspect the deployed page and image URL.
6. What GitHub Pages can host
GitHub describes Pages as static-site hosting for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files, optionally processed through a build process. A plain thumbnail image fits that model. Branch publishing uses Jekyll by default; custom build processes and generators can use GitHub Actions. Pages does not support server-side PHP, Ruby, or Python, so thumbnail files should be part of the static site output rather than generated by server-side code at request time. ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one GET request. The example saves a screenshot of the Stripe homepage as WebP; replace the target URL with your project page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-info tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does India require a different GitHub Pages thumbnail format or size?
No India-specific thumbnail requirement is established here. Follow the general workflow and check your deployed portfolio on the devices and network conditions relevant to your audience.
What size should portfolio thumbnails be?
There is no universal card size established by the cited GitHub guidance. Export for your own card layout and verify legibility at the rendered size.
