Build previews from verified scheme records first; use automated page metadata only as a supplement. A useful preview identifies the scheme, the responsible department, and the destination, with a concise description and an obvious link to the official page. Treat destination HTML as untrusted, keep links accessible, and show when each record was last checked.
What a useful scheme-link preview should show
For each listing, make the purpose of the link understandable before a visitor opens it. A practical card can include:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Scheme name, written clearly rather than copied blindly from page metadata.
- Responsible department or organization, when it is known and verified.
- A short description explaining what the linked page contains.
- Destination URL or a clear external-link cue, so readers know they are leaving the directory.
- Last-checked date, to distinguish a recently reviewed record from stale information.
These are implementation recommendations, not a GIGW-prescribed preview format. The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) call for relevant page metadata, meaningful link text, clear ownership on important pages, and basic navigation and contact information. See the GIGW guidance. The Integrated Government Online Directory describes itself as the official directory of Indian Government websites, while cautioning that linked sites may not comply with GIGW and that readers should verify information with the relevant department: iGOD description and website policies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not label a destination “official” just because it looks governmental or appears in a directory. Confirm its ownership and link the responsible department where possible. Keep your directory’s identity separate from the destination’s: a preview must not imply government endorsement of your directory, or endorsement of the scheme by a body that does not own it.

Choose editorial records as the source of truth
Maintain a reviewed record for every scheme link. This is more reliable than depending on live metadata, which can be absent, misleading, blocked, or changed without notice.
| Record field | What to store | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme name | Editor-reviewed display name | Prevents inconsistent or confusing card titles. |
| Owning department | Verified department or organization name, if established | Helps readers identify who is responsible for the destination. |
| Official destination | Reviewed URL and any relevant canonical destination | Gives users a direct route to the source rather than relying on a preview. |
| Summary | Short, editor-written explanation | Provides a stable fallback when page metadata cannot be retrieved. |
| Last checked | Date the record and destination were reviewed | Shows the freshness of the directory record without asserting that a failed fetch means a scheme has ended. |
| Fetched metadata | Optional title and description, stored separately from reviewed fields | Allows safe comparison and editorial review instead of silently trusting remote content. |
Use fetched titles and descriptions as suggestions, not authoritative records. If a page cannot be fetched, display the reviewed summary and last-checked date; do not imply the scheme or destination is closed. Give visitors the direct link to the department source so they can verify current details.

Generate previews with a safe, resilient workflow
- Collect and verify the destination. Confirm the scheme’s owning department and intended destination, and note when the record was checked.
- Write the fallback card content. Add an editor-reviewed name and summary, the responsible body where known, and a direct source link.
- Optionally retrieve metadata. Fetch the destination HTML on the server without executing its scripts. Treat all returned markup and metadata as untrusted input.
- Review before publishing. Compare retrieved title and description with the reviewed record. Reject content that is empty, misleading, or inconsistent with the destination.
- Render an accessible card. Use meaningful link text, keyboard-operable controls, readable text, and a clear external-destination cue.
- Recheck records on a schedule appropriate to your directory. Update the review date and content when the department or destination changes.
GIGW 3.0 covers quality, accessibility, usability, and security for government websites, portals, web applications, and apps; it was formulated jointly with STQC and CERT-In, and its cybersecurity chapter was formulated by CERT-In. It does not prescribe Open Graph tags, a particular preview design, or a metadata-fetching protocol. Apply the guidance to your directory’s own context rather than treating a particular card layout as a compliance requirement. See the GIGW introduction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A preview service that fetches URLs supplied or influenced by users can create server-side request forgery (SSRF) risk. GIGW requires security audit clearance for a government website, web application, portal, or mobile app before production hosting, but the reviewed guidance does not specify controls for preview fetching. The following are general engineering safeguards, not GIGW-mandated preview rules:

- Perfect quality CD digital audio extraction (ripping)
- Fastest CD Ripper available
- Extract audio from CDs to wav or Mp3
- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more
- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more
- Allow only HTTP or HTTPS destinations and reject unexpected URL schemes.
- Block loopback, private, link-local, and reserved IP ranges; validate the resolved address and re-check after DNS resolution to reduce DNS-rebinding risk.
- Validate every redirect destination and limit redirect count. Do not allow a permitted public URL to redirect to an internal address.
- Set strict connection and overall timeouts, and cap response size before parsing.
- Do not execute JavaScript, load subresources, or render the destination in a privileged browser session merely to obtain its title and description.
- Parse only the fields needed, escape output when rendering, and keep fetched content separate from trusted editorial fields.
- Log fetch failures safely, without storing secrets or exposing internal network details to visitors.
If reliable restrictions cannot be enforced, skip automated fetching and publish the reviewed record. A fallback is better than exposing internal services or presenting unverified content as fact.
Make the link accessible and policy-aware
Use link text that describes the destination or the action, not vague text such as “click here.” Ensure the card can be reached and activated with a keyboard, that its text remains readable without decorative styling, and that the external destination is apparent. These practices align with GIGW’s meaningful-link and accessibility guidance: GIGW guidance.
Rank #4
Check the linking policy of each destination where one is provided. GIGW’s own policy says prior permission is not required to link to GIGW, bars framing, requests a new browser window, and limits its banners to promotion without implied government endorsement. Those terms apply to GIGW, not automatically to every scheme website. Follow each destination’s own policy rather than assuming a universal government linking rule: GIGW link policy.

The GIGW link policy gives dimensions for its own optional banners—220×50, 310×70, and 400×90 pixels. These are specifications for GIGW banner assets, not required dimensions for directory previews or evidence of preview performance. Its banner instructions apply to those GIGW assets; they do not automatically govern banners from other sites.
Troubleshoot incomplete or unavailable previews
- The page has no useful title or description: Keep the reviewed scheme name and summary as the published content. Do not substitute a raw URL or empty metadata field as the card’s main label.
- The fetch times out or is blocked: Do not treat the failure as evidence that the scheme is unavailable. Show the editorial fallback and last-checked date, then provide the direct destination link.
- The metadata conflicts with the directory record: Do not publish it automatically. Verify the page and department ownership, then update the reviewed record if warranted.
- The destination redirects: Revalidate the final destination and make sure it is still controlled by the expected department or organization before changing the stored source URL.
- The page has changed since the last review: Update the record and its last-checked date after verification. Avoid language suggesting a scheme is current solely because its URL still responds.
- A card is unclear to keyboard or screen-reader users: Replace generic link text, expose the destination context in text, and verify that the link can be reached and activated without a mouse.

If you want a rendered capture of a destination while building or checking directory previews, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is a capture aid, not a substitute for verifying scheme ownership or writing the directory’s trusted summary. A one-request example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://igod.gov.in/about_us -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
