Use browser automation to visit each course provider’s public website, capture the same viewport or a chosen page element, and save the result in a consistent image format and crop. For a directory card, a focused view of the course or provider is usually more legible than a full-page screenshot reduced to thumbnail size.
Plan a repeatable capture workflow
- Build a URL list. Keep each provider URL paired with the course listing it belongs to. Store the original URL and capture date with the image so editors can identify and refresh it.
- Choose the target view. Decide whether the card should show the initial viewport or a specific course banner or other element. Use a full-page image only if the whole page is genuinely useful as a preview.
- Standardize capture and output. Use the same browser setup, viewport, format, scale, and directory-card crop across providers. Playwright can save a screenshot to a file or return an image buffer for post-processing. Its Page API documents viewport, full-page, and element captures, plus format, quality, scale, clipping, masking, and stylesheet options: Playwright Page screenshot API.
- Wait for meaningful content. Allow scripts and delayed images to render before capturing. The appropriate wait depends on the site; no single wait condition guarantees that every provider page is ready.
- Review before publishing. Check a sample for failed loads, cookie banners, login walls, wrong course pages, and outdated branding. A screenshot tool cannot decide whether the result is editorially suitable.
Choose the right capture for a directory card

These are choices about how to capture and present the page, not a prescribed thumbnail standard. Set the card ratio and display dimensions in your directory design, then crop consistently.

Capture thumbnails with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API supports saving viewport, full-page, and element screenshots. The following Node.js example visits a list of public URLs, waits for network activity to settle, and saves a viewport capture for each entry. It uses Chromium and PNG output; treat the wait as a practical choice rather than a guarantee that every site has finished rendering.

For an element capture, locate the intended element and call its screenshot method; for a full-page capture, set fullPage: true. Those alternatives are better chosen per directory design than enabled indiscriminately.

The API also allows screenshots to be returned as a buffer instead of written directly to a file. That can feed a separate crop or image-processing step when your card dimensions differ from the browser viewport.
Keep output consistent and useful
- Fix the environment. Use a consistent operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware where practicable, and headless mode. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode; its visual comparison guidance explains these sources of variation at Playwright visual comparisons.
- Choose one format. Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot output. Use one format across the directory; lossy formats support quality settings, while PNG is lossless.
- Choose scale deliberately. CSS-pixel scale helps keep dimensions compact and uniform; device-pixel scale retains more pixels on high-density displays. Make this choice alongside the target card size.
- Reduce visual noise carefully. Playwright supports masks and injected stylesheets that can obscure or restyle elements. Use them to make a capture easier to read, but do not alter page content in a way that misrepresents the provider.
- Record provenance. Preserve the source URL and capture date next to every image. This makes stale branding and incorrect course mappings easier to investigate.
Screenshot thumbnails are not favicons
A screenshot thumbnail previews a page view; a favicon is a small site-identifying icon. Google’s guidance for favicons in Search calls for a square icon at least 8 by 8 pixels and recommends larger than 48 by 48 pixels, while noting that Search display is not guaranteed even when guidelines are followed. Capturing a public page does not itself establish permission to republish its contents. The reviewed material does not settle the legal position in India for publishing screenshots of third-party course websites. Check the provider’s terms and obtain permission or appropriate legal advice for the intended use before publication.

- The image is blank or missing content: the page may still be rendering, may rely on delayed scripts or images, or may have failed to load. Inspect the page in the browser, adjust the wait approach for that site, and review the response and resulting capture.
- The wrong page appears: verify the stored provider URL and course mapping, then check whether navigation redirected to a login or other page.
- The card looks inconsistent: compare viewport dimensions, device scale, browser environment, and crop. Variation in rendering environments can affect screenshot output.
- Cookie banners or popups obscure the page: review the capture and handle overlays in a way that does not misrepresent the page. Playwright supports injected stylesheets and masks, but removal is a workflow choice, not a guarantee that every overlay can be handled automatically.
- A long capture is unreadable: switch to a viewport or element capture and apply the directory’s consistent card crop rather than shrinking the full page.
