There is no single setting or image size that makes a thumbnail appear beside an Indian business in Google mobile search. First identify the surface you mean: an image in an ordinary Search result, a Google Business Profile photo, a favicon, or a Google Discover image. Each has different controls, and Google decides what to display.
Identify which mobile thumbnail you want
“Thumbnail” can refer to several different images. Changing one does not automatically change the others:

- Website image in a Search result: Google may show an image associated with a page, but does not promise to show a particular one. The image preview controls set a maximum preview size; they do not select the image.
- Google Business Profile photo: Upload photos to the business’s profile. This is separate from adding an image to its website.
- Favicon: The small site icon that may appear beside a result is configured separately from page photos. See Google’s favicon guidance.
- Google Discover image: Discover has its own large-image recommendation. It is not a general requirement for local Search thumbnails.
Google results can vary by device, country, language, and query. A change that makes an image eligible does not ensure it will appear for every person searching in India.
Prepare an authentic image for the right surface
For a Google Business Profile
Use a clear, well-lit, in-focus photo that genuinely represents the premises, products, services, or team. Google advises against significant alterations or excessive filters because the image should represent reality. Its current profile-photo guidance recommends JPG or PNG files from 10 KB to 5 MB, with 720 × 720 pixels recommended and 250 × 250 pixels as the minimum. These are Business Profile photo specifications, not universal dimensions for website images.

A verified Business Profile is needed for photos to show. Even if you set a cover photo, Google may choose another image to display. New uploads can take 24–48 hours to appear after review; this is an estimated review/display window, not a guarantee.
For an image on your website
Choose an image that accurately represents the specific page—for example, a real storefront photo on the location page or a product photo on that product’s page. Keep the image URL stable and make sure Google can crawl it. Use a supported image format, and avoid blocking the file from crawlers. There is no single official pixel size for all ordinary mobile Search thumbnails in the guidance cited here.
For a favicon or Discover
For a favicon, use a representative square icon at a stable, crawlable URL. Google recommends one larger than 48 × 48 pixels; the stated minimum is 8 × 8 pixels. Eligibility does not guarantee that the icon will appear in every result.

For Discover, Google’s large-image recommendation is at least 1200 pixels wide. That recommendation concerns Discover and should not be treated as a universal size rule for local Search results or Business Profile photos.
Make the website image available to mobile Googlebot
Google uses the mobile version of a site’s content, crawled with its smartphone agent, for indexing and ranking. Check that the relevant image and its surrounding page content are present and accessible on mobile, not only on desktop. Keep the mobile and desktop image URLs and descriptions consistent where practical. Google’s mobile-first indexing guidance explains why desktop-only content can be missed.
- Use a publicly accessible image URL that returns the image rather than a login page or blocked response.
- Check robots rules and any CDN or hotlink protections that could prevent crawling.
- Ensure the page actually references the image and that mobile layouts do not hide or replace it with unrelated content.
- Use descriptive alt text where the image conveys information; do not stuff keywords into it.
Allow large image previews, without expecting a specific image
If you want Google to be permitted to show a large image preview, use the max-image-preview:large robots directive, for example in the page’s HTML head:

This sets the maximum preview size Google may use. It is not an instruction to show a particular image, and it cannot force a thumbnail to appear. A page-level directive may be unnecessary if your site already allows large previews through its applicable robots settings.

LocalBusiness structured data can describe a business and include image URLs. Treat it as a way to provide accurate structured facts, not as a thumbnail-selection switch. Google’s LocalBusiness documentation says images should be crawlable, indexable, and representative of the marked-up business.
Google’s advice for restaurant carousel eligibility includes multiple high-resolution images in 16:9, 4:3, and 1:1 ratios. That is advice for that specific restaurant experience, not a general image-ratio rule for every Indian local listing.

Upload photos directly to the Google Business Profile
- Sign in to the Google account that manages the verified business profile.
- Open the profile in Google Search or Google Maps and choose the option to add photos.
- Select genuine, relevant images that meet Google’s Business Profile file guidance.
- Review the listing after upload; allow time for Google’s review and display process.

A screenshot can help you inspect whether the image loads and how the page appears at a phone-sized viewport. It cannot tell you which image Google will choose for a search result.

- Open the page in Chrome and open Developer Tools.
- Turn on the device toolbar, choose a phone preset or set a representative viewport, and reload the page.
- Confirm the image appears, is not clipped unexpectedly, and remains accessible after the page finishes loading.
- Check the image URL and page source separately if it does not appear; a browser screenshot alone cannot diagnose crawler access restrictions.

Troubleshoot when the wrong image appears—or none does
- There is no image beside the ordinary Search result: Google chooses whether to show a preview and which image to use. Confirm a relevant image is crawlable and present on mobile, then allow Google to recrawl; there is no directive that guarantees display.
- The desktop page has the image but the mobile page does not: Check responsive templates, lazy-loading behavior, and mobile-specific content. Google indexes using the mobile version.
- The profile photo is missing: Confirm the profile is verified, the image meets the profile’s file requirements, and allow time for review. A cover selection is not a fixed display-order command.
- The favicon is not showing: Verify that the homepage and icon URL are crawlable and that the icon is square and stable. Google may still choose not to show it.
- The image is visible in a screenshot but not to Google: Check crawler access, robots directives, authentication requirements, and whether the image URL serves successfully without a browser session.
Frequently asked questions
Does adding an Open Graph image force Google to use it?
No. An Open Graph image may help other platforms identify a page preview, but it does not compel Google to select that image for a Search result.
Should every local business image be 1200 pixels wide?
No. The 1200-pixel guidance applies to a large image preview in Discover. Business Profile photos have separate specifications, and ordinary Search previews have no universal pixel requirement in the cited guidance.
