Set the page’s reduced-motion preference before taking the screenshot: await page.emulateMedia({ reducedMotion: 'reduce' }), then call page.screenshot(). If you also need Playwright to stop animations during capture, use the separate animations: 'disabled' screenshot option.
Capture a screenshot with reduced motion enabled
In Playwright’s JavaScript API, emulate prefers-reduced-motion: reduce before capturing. The following complete example launches Chromium, opens a page, applies the preference, and saves a viewport screenshot:

})();Replace the example URL with the page you need to capture. The important order is to set the media preference before calling page.screenshot(). For a viewport capture, omit fullPage; to capture the full scrollable page, set it to true.

page.emulateMedia({ reducedMotion: 'reduce' }) changes the media preference exposed to the page. CSS and application code decide what to do in response. It does not guarantee that every animation stops.

To have Playwright disable animations for the capture as well, add animations: 'disabled' to the screenshot call:

});Use reduced-motion emulation when you want to test or capture the page’s response to that accessibility preference. Use the screenshot animation option when you need Playwright to stop animations during capture. You can combine them, as above, when both behaviors matter. Set reduced motion by default in Playwright Test
For tests that should consistently use reduced motion, set the test fixture option in the Playwright Test configuration:

This configures the preference for tests; it does not itself mean that all page animations are disabled. See the Playwright Test configuration reference.

Save an image or compare a visual baseline
Use page.screenshot() when the task is to save an image file, such as a PNG for review or another workflow. If you are writing a visual regression test against a stored baseline, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion instead:

Make visual comparisons reproducible
A screenshot baseline can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible; otherwise, unrelated rendering differences may cause a comparison to fail. Reduced-motion emulation controls one input, not every factor that affects rendering.
Troubleshoot unexpected motion or screenshot differences
- Motion is still visible: Confirm
emulateMediaruns before the screenshot. The preference only tells the page that reduced motion is requested; check whether its CSS or application logic responds to that preference. Addanimations: 'disabled'if the capture needs Playwright to stop animations. - The image does not include the whole page: Add
fullPage: truetopage.screenshot(). Without it, the screenshot captures the viewport. - The visual assertion fails across machines: Run baseline generation and comparison using the same operating system, browser version, settings, hardware conditions, and headless mode where practical.
- The configured preference is not the one you expect: Check the fixture value.
