Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep a protagonist recognizable from page to page, decide which traits must stay fixed, approve a canonical character image, and reuse it as an identity reference where the image tool supports that. Keep the illustration style in a separate reusable block, plan each scene’s composition, and review all selected pages together for drift. References and careful iteration can improve consistency, but no cited tool documentation guarantees exact character identity across a whole book.
1. Define the character before generating story pages
Write a short character bible: a stable description you can reuse in every prompt. Specify the features a reader should recognize even when the character is moving, emotional, or seen from a different angle.

- Age range and body proportions
- Face shape, eye details, and hair or fur
- Skin or fur colors
- Clothing and accessories
- One or two distinctive marks, such as a freckle, patch, or unusual tail shape
Separate fixed traits from scene-specific details. “A small, round-faced fox with cream muzzle, dark ear tips, a green scarf, and a notch in the left ear” can remain stable while the fox runs, laughs, or waits in a forest. Keep the description concrete and concise; adding new adjectives on each page gives the model more opportunities to reinterpret the character.

Generate a few concept options, choose the version that best represents the character, and save the selected image as the canonical reference. Do this before producing the book’s page illustrations. Where a tool has a character-focused reference control, use that for identity rather than relying only on a written prompt.

- The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Boxed Set Illustrated edition
Midjourney lists character references among its consistency tools, but the available controls and behavior can depend on the version. Its Character Reference documentation describes that feature. An image reference is guidance, not a guarantee that every detail will be reproduced exactly.
For ChatGPT image generation, OpenAI describes using uploaded images as guidance and recommends keeping the reference set small and explaining each image’s role. If you provide more than one, label them clearly in the prompt—for example, “Image 1 is the character design; Image 2 is the room layout.” OpenAI’s Creating images with ChatGPT guidance also recommends repeating important character details in prompts.
3. Make the illustration style reusable—and separate from identity
Create a separate style block describing the treatment of the whole book: medium, line quality, palette, texture, lighting, and level of detail. For example: “soft watercolor washes, fine warm-brown outlines, a muted teal-and-ochre palette, gentle daylight, simple backgrounds.” Use the same block on every page, changing it only if you intentionally want a different look.
Where supported, use a style reference to guide visual treatment. Do not treat it as a character lock: Midjourney says its style reference transfers qualities such as color, medium, texture, and lighting, rather than copying people or objects. Its Style Reference documentation advises keeping the prompt focused on the scene instead of piling on competing style terms.
Adobe Firefly offers a style reference image and a strength control for how closely a result follows that reference. This can help carry a visual treatment between illustrations, but style adherence and character identity are different jobs. See Adobe’s style reference guidance.
4. Plan the spread, then vary only the scene details
Before generating an illustration, note the action, emotion, setting, framing, and important spatial relationships. Keep the character bible and style block stable; add only the scene-specific instructions needed for that page. For example, specify that the fox is sitting on the right side of the frame, looking worried at a broken kite on the left, with a wide view of a hill behind them.

Composition is not identity. Adobe Firefly has a separate composition-reference workflow that guides arrangement and structure in the frame, with a control for reference adherence. Use it to help repeat a layout or spatial relationship when useful, not to preserve the protagonist’s face or clothing. Details are in Adobe’s composition reference guidance.

5. Iterate with small, controlled changes
When a result is close but not right, identify the visible problem and revise that element rather than rewriting the whole prompt. If the fox’s ear markings drift, restate those markings and ask for that correction while leaving the pose, setting, and style intact. OpenAI Academy’s image-generation guidance says, “The best way to improve an image is usually through small, targeted revisions.” It also recommends repeating important details and clearly explaining the relationships among a small set of uploaded images.
Midjourney seeds can be useful when testing prompt changes, but they are not character memory. Midjourney’s official Seeds documentation states: “Seeds can’t capture or bookmark a specific style, character, or appearance across different prompts.” It also warns that seed behavior can be unpredictable across sessions and settings. Treat a seed as a limited testing aid, not a substitute for references.

6. Compare the pages before layout
Put the selected illustrations into a contact sheet or view them together at the same size. Review the sequence for differences that are easy to miss when images are inspected one at a time.
- Face shape, eyes, hair or fur, and distinctive marks
- Body proportions, clothing, and accessories
- Color choices and the illustration style
- Whether the framing and placement support the story and page design
If one page is an outlier, regenerate or edit only the mismatched elements where the tool permits. Then compare the revised page against the canonical reference and neighboring illustrations. Human review remains necessary: reference controls help steer output, but the cited documentation does not establish a tool that guarantees a perfectly consistent book.
7. Save the assets needed to reproduce the workflow
Keep a project folder for the book rather than relying on prompt history alone. For each page, save the approved character and style references, the prompt, the page plan, and the selected output. Record the image model or version, aspect ratio, and settings used so you can interpret or recreate results later. Recheck the platform’s current controls when starting a new project because features and model behavior can change.

How the documented reference controls differ
| Workflow or control | What it helps with | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Midjourney character reference | Using a character-focused reference for consistency, subject to version-dependent behavior. | It does not guarantee exact identity across every page. |
| Midjourney style reference | Transferring overall visual qualities such as color, medium, texture, or lighting. | It does not copy people or objects, so it is not a character-identity control. |
| Adobe Firefly style reference | Guiding visual style, with a strength control for reference adherence. | Style adherence is not the same as consistent character identity. |
| Adobe Firefly composition reference | Guiding the arrangement and structure of elements in a frame, with adjustable adherence. | Composition guidance is not a character-identity control. |
| ChatGPT image generation | Using a small, clearly explained set of uploaded images as guidance and making targeted revisions. | The cited guidance does not describe a dedicated character-lock control or guarantee continuity across a book. |
These documented controls address different parts of the problem. The cited sources are not an independent head-to-head test, so they do not support declaring one platform universally best. Choose based on the controls you need and plan for manual review.
