For mobile gambling in Great Britain, use your operator’s financial-limit settings if you want to control how much you deposit, wager or lose; choose a time-out if you want a temporary pause; and consider self-exclusion if you want to stop across multiple licensed online operators. These are different controls, so check what each one covers before you confirm it.
Choose the control that matches your goal
- Keep gambling within a budget: set a financial limit in the operator’s account or safer-gambling settings.
- Pause gambling with one operator: use its time-out or break feature and check the duration and products covered.
- Stop across multiple online operators in Great Britain: consider GAMSTOP, the multi-operator self-exclusion scheme. A limit or time-out on one app does not automatically cover other services.
Self-exclusion is a formal agreement to stop gambling, intended for people who recognise gambling is causing harm and want support to stop. Under the UK Gambling Commission’s guidance, operators must close a self-excluded customer’s account and return remaining account funds. See the Commission’s self-exclusion guidance.
Find the settings in your app
Open the app’s account or profile area and look for terms such as “Safer gambling,” “Responsible gambling,” “Limits” or “Time out.” Those are useful labels to search for, not a universal menu path: app layouts and exact controls differ by operator. If you cannot find the setting, use the operator’s in-app help or contact customer support.
For remote gambling covered by Great Britain’s rules, the UK Gambling Commission requires financial-limit tools to be easy to access and linked from the homepage and deposit screens. Its RTS 12 financial-limits standard also requires operators to prompt customers to set a limit and explain when it will take effect.

Pick a limit by what it measures
Read the definition before entering an amount. A “deposit limit” has a specific meaning under the Commission’s current standard: it caps gross deposits. Other limits measure different things and are not interchangeable.

| Loss limit | Stakes minus winnings or returns during the period. |
| Net deposit limit | Deposits minus withdrawals during the period. |
RTS 12 requires gross deposit limits to be offered and reserves the name “deposit limit” for that measure. An operator may also offer stake, loss or net-deposit limits. Check whether a limit applies across the whole account or only to a particular product or channel; the operator must make its scope clear.

Choose a period and understand how limits combine
The required limit periods under RTS 12 are 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month. The standard does not make these the only possible options, but they are the minimum periods operators must offer. Check the app’s description of when each period resets, including whether the reset follows a fixed schedule or a time you choose.
If you set limits for more than one period, the most restrictive combination applies. The Commission’s example: with a £10 daily deposit limit and a £100 weekly limit, you can deposit no more than £10 on a day and no more than £70 over that week. The weekly remainder is therefore constrained by the daily caps already used.

Save the limit and know what happens if you change it
Under RTS 12, a limit should take effect as soon as practicable, and the operator must tell you when it will start. A requested reduction must be implemented immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. A requested increase is slower by design: it requires at least a 24-hour cooling-off period, followed by your positive confirmation before the increase takes effect.
For active accounts, operators must prompt customers to review account and transaction information at least every six months. Use that review to check whether the limit still matches your budget, not as a reason to raise it.

Take a break or exclude yourself
Use the operator’s time-out for a temporary pause
Choose the app’s time-out or break setting, then read its duration and scope before confirming. There is no single break length that applies to every operator, and the Commission says there is no evidence establishing an ideal duration. A pause from one operator may leave other apps accessible.
The National Lottery’s Responsible Play tools illustrate why you should check the specific service: they offer short breaks from 1 day to 5 months, longer breaks from 6 months to 5 years, and lifetime exclusion. Use GAMSTOP for broader online self-exclusion in Great Britain
GAMSTOP allows a person to self-exclude from online gambling websites and apps run by gambling businesses licensed in Great Britain through one request. Check the scheme’s scope and any relevant product exceptions before relying on it. For example, The National Lottery says GAMSTOP covers its Instant Win Games but not its Draw Games; its own settings are needed to exclude from all National Lottery games. The Commission lists the schemes at Free multi-operator and national self-exclusion schemes.
Add payment or device barriers if they help
A bank gambling block can add another obstacle to making payments. Availability and activation steps depend on the bank; the Commission’s list was last updated on 25 February 2025, so check directly with your provider for current options. Its guidance is at Block gambling payments with your bank.
Gambling-blocking software can add friction on devices, but it is not a guarantee that access is impossible and does not replace operator self-exclusion or support. The National Lottery’s Responsible Play page names Gamban and BetBlocker; check each service’s current coverage and terms before installing it. The Commission also suggests reality checks and time trackers as ways to monitor session time, though the features available vary by app.
