How to Write a Children’s Book With AI—and Revise It for the Right Age

Start by choosing a specific age range and deciding whether children will read the book themselves or hear it read aloud. If the publisher or submission venue permits AI, use it only for clearly defined support, then revise and check every line yourself. Age-appropriate writing is about more than simpler words: plot, emotional intensity, humor, relationships and representation must also make sense for the intended child.

Define the reader before using AI

Choose an intended age range, the reading context and the story’s emotional promise before you prompt a tool or revise a draft. Consider what the reader may already know about the subject and whether the story is designed for independent reading or a read-aloud. These choices give you a useful editorial target; they do not define every child in that age group. Google’s guidance for children’s digital content notes that development varies, and its age cues are not a book-publishing standard or a validated reading-level rubric.

  • Ages 5 and under: Google’s guidance describes children as beginning to develop communication and social skills and potentially having difficulty managing emotions; it recommends simple, common words in its vocabulary guidance.
  • Ages 6–8: School and friendships become more prominent. The guidance suggests limited text with some complex vocabulary.
  • Ages 9–12: Friendships and identity are prominent. The guidance suggests brief, useful text that can include some complex vocabulary and language elements.

Use those cues as prompts for your own editorial judgment, not as rules that every child must meet. The age guidance comes from Google’s Building for Kids resource for digital experiences, so adapt it cautiously for books.

Decide whether AI fits the venue’s policy

There is no single policy that applies to every children’s book. The intended publisher, contest, fellowship, agent or self-publishing service may allow, restrict or oppose different kinds of AI use. Check the current rules for the specific venue before putting its manuscript or other material into a tool.

Organization What its policy says What that means for an author
SCBWI In a policy updated September 14, 2026, the organization says: “Therefore, we are opposed to any use of text-prompted generative AI in writing, illustrating, translating, or other aspects of creating children’s books.” Its traditional publishing standard does not encourage or include GenAI-created text, translated text or illustrations; its policy addenda apply to members working in traditional, hybrid and self-publishing contexts. This is SCBWI’s own position and policy, not a law or a universal publisher rule. Read its current policy and any rules that apply to your membership or submission.
Elsevier Its policy for covered books and commissioned content allows responsible AI and AI-assisted use with human oversight and control. It requires authors to disclose use in a separate declaration upon submission, including the tool, purpose and extent of human oversight. These requirements apply to Elsevier’s covered work, not to all children’s publishers. Consult Elsevier’s policy for books and commissioned content.

Compare the venue’s rules on whether AI is allowed, which tasks are permitted (such as brainstorming, editing, rewriting, translation or illustration), whether disclosure is required, what information may be entered into tools, what rights a tool claims, and what process records the venue may ask you to provide.

Keep the author in charge of the story

Build from a premise, characters and motivations you have developed as an author. Where the venue permits it, AI can help generate alternative outlines or flag sentences that may be unclear. Define the task narrowly, assess the suggestions and make the story decisions yourself. A prompt is not a substitute for a finished manuscript, and a tool cannot certify that a story is developmentally suitable.

A 2023 study, On the Automatic Generation and Simplification of Children’s Stories, found that the language models tested in its experiments did not reliably limit vocabulary to levels appropriate for younger age groups. That result describes the models and methods examined in that study; it does not establish how every current tool performs. Treat generated writing as a draft rather than assuming its vocabulary is calibrated to a child’s age.

Revise language and story for the intended age

Make meaning clear without flattening the prose

Check sentence length, clarity and unfamiliar vocabulary in the context of the whole story. Prefer common words when a more difficult word adds nothing, but keep vivid or unfamiliar words when context makes their meaning understandable and they serve the story. For a read-aloud, read the text aloud: notice where rhythm, phrasing or sentence structure makes it hard to follow.

Check the experience, not only the word list

Ask whether the child can follow what the main character wants and why. Review whether the plot, humor, conflict and emotional consequences fit the intended reader. Consider whether a frightening scene or difficult feeling could confuse or distress a child at that age, and whether the story handles it with care. Google advises judging potentially disturbing or confusing content in light of age and developmental stage.

Look for implied messages and representation

Review relationships, character roles and the story’s assumptions about people. Look for subtle stereotypes as well as explicit ones: Google cautions that they can affect children’s sense of themselves and others. Aim for representation that is respectful and specific rather than relying on a character to stand in for an entire group.

Review facts, rights and confidential material

Generated text still needs a human content and rights review. Check factual claims against reliable sources rather than relying on generated citations. Review originality and third-party rights, the privacy of material entered into a tool, and the tool’s terms, including any rights it claims beyond providing the service. These are among the concerns set out in Elsevier’s policy for its covered authors. Elsevier also says authors remain responsible for the work and must thoroughly review and adapt generated material so that it reflects their own original contribution.

UNICEF’s Guidance on AI and children, Version 3.0 provides a broader child-rights context, including safety, privacy, fairness, transparency, development and well-being. It addresses AI systems rather than serving as a children’s-book writing manual.

Use a final human-review checklist

  • Does the story make sense to the child, not only to an adult?
  • Can the child follow what the character wants and why?
  • Does the language support the story rather than interrupt it?
  • Are emotionally difficult moments handled with care for the intended reader?
  • Can readers infer unfamiliar terms from context, or do they need clearer wording?
  • Is the representation respectful and specific?
  • Has a person checked every name, fact, quotation and permission?

Document AI use when the venue requires it

Before submission, check the venue’s current policy and follow its rules for allowed tasks, disclosure and documentation. Elsevier requires a separate declaration for AI use on covered book and commissioned-content submissions, identifying the tool, purpose and extent of human oversight. SCBWI takes a different position; its policy says finalists may be asked for process evidence and that it will not use AI detectors in this process. Keep drafts and revision history if documentation may matter, and do not assume that one organization’s requirements apply elsewhere.
