To make a collaborative Apple Music playlist on iPhone, open a playlist in the Music app, tap Collaboration, choose whether to approve participants, then tap Start Collaborating and share the invitation. You need an Apple Music subscription, and the feature must be available in your region. These 15 tips cover inviting people, managing access, editing tracks and fixing missing controls.

Start a collaborative playlist and invite people

1. Use a new or existing playlist

You can start with a playlist you have already made or create one first. Open it in the Music app on your iPhone.

3. Choose whether to approve participants

Before starting, decide whether you want to review requests. Turn on Approve Collaborators if you want control over who joins.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

4. Understand what approval changes

With approval enabled, people must request to join and you can review their requests. With approval off, anyone who has the playlist link can join. Apple warns that collaborators may also share the link, so treat an unapproved link as an open invitation.

5. Start collaborating and send the invitation

Tap Start Collaborating, then choose a sharing method such as Messages, Mail or AirDrop. Apple’s iPhone guide states, “If you don’t turn on this option, anyone with the link can join the collaborative playlist.” Apple Support: Share playlists.

9. Remove one collaborator

If a particular person should no longer have access, use the owner controls in the collaboration screen to remove that collaborator. This is different from ending collaboration for everyone.

Edit songs and react as a collaborator

12. Add a song

Open the playlist, tap More, then Edit. Choose Add Music, search for a track, and tap Add.

13. Remove a song

In the playlist’s More > Edit screen, remove a track using the available remove control beside it. Collaborators can remove songs as well as add them.

14. Reorder the playlist

In More > Edit, drag the reorder control beside a song to move it. Because participants can reorder tracks, agree on a sequencing approach if the playlist needs to follow a deliberate order.

15. React to a song with emoji

Play a song, open Now Playing, tap Reactions, and choose an emoji. Reactions let participants respond to tracks without changing the playlist order or contents.

Requirements and troubleshooting

  • Apple Music subscription: A subscription is required to collaborate.
  • Current software: Apple advises using the latest iOS or iPadOS version. Update the iPhone if collaboration controls are unavailable.
  • Regional availability: Apple Music collaboration is not available in every country or region.
  • Age limit: Children under 13 cannot collaborate. Apple’s cross-platform guidance also says approval is on by default for users aged 13 to 17.
  • Check what kind of playlist sharing you used: Sharing a playlist publicly on an Apple Music profile is not the same as enabling collaborative editing. Open the playlist’s collaboration controls to start collaboration and manage participants.

For Apple’s current requirements and cross-platform steps, see Apple Support: Collaborate on playlists in Apple Music. Button names or placement may shift with software updates, so use the latest iPhone software if the documented controls do not appear.
