How Much Bandwidth Does Audio Really Use on a Website?

Website audio data use depends on bitrate and playback time. See approximate MB per hour and why real transfers can be higher.

There is no single data-use figure for website audio: the amount depends mainly on the audio’s encoded bitrate and how long it plays. As a quick estimate, 64 kbps audio uses about 28.8 MB of audio payload per hour, while 128 kbps uses about 57.6 MB. Those figures exclude transfer overhead and everything else the page loads.

Bandwidth rate and data used are different things

Bandwidth is a rate: kilobits per second (kbps) describes how quickly data is transferred. Data use is a total volume, usually expressed in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB), accumulated over time. People often use “bandwidth” to mean either one, but the distinction matters: a 128 kbps stream played for longer transfers more total data than the same stream played briefly.

The calculation estimates the encoded audio payload, not the complete amount a listener’s device or mobile plan records. A web page may also download images, scripts, stylesheets, ads, and other media. Network and media-delivery overhead add traffic too.

Estimate audio data from bitrate and listening time

For a known, constant bitrate, use:

  • Data in kilobits = bitrate in kbps × playback time in seconds.
  • Data in kilobytes ≈ (bitrate in kbps × playback time in seconds) ÷ 8.
  • Decimal megabytes ≈ kilobytes ÷ 1,000.

For example, one hour at 64 kbps is 64 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 28,800 kilobytes, or about 28.8 decimal MB. The following estimates use the same calculation. They assume a constant bitrate and cover audio payload only, before network, container, buffering, and page overhead; they are calculations, not published measurements.

Encoded bitrate Approximate payload per hour Approximate payload for 10 minutes
64 kbps 28.8 MB 4.8 MB
128 kbps 57.6 MB 9.6 MB
320 kbps 144 MB 24 MB

The 320 kbps row is an illustrative rate for comparison, not a recommendation. The estimates use decimal megabytes (1 MB = 1,000 kilobytes). Actual usage may differ when the encoder varies the bitrate or a player adapts its stream.

Speech, music, and audio quality change the rate

Speech can use less data than higher-quality music. MDN Web Docs gives recommended Opus rates for WebRTC with a 20 ms frame size: 8–12 kbps for narrow-band speech, 16–20 kbps for wide-band speech, 28–40 kbps for full-band speech, 48–64 kbps for full-band mono music, and 64–128 kbps for full-band stereo music. These are recommendations for those media types and WebRTC settings, not a promise that every website uses those rates. See MDN’s WebRTC codec guide.

Codec and encoder configuration also affect the bitrate needed for a particular result. MDN describes Opus as supporting WebRTC rates from 6 to 510 kbps, adjustable dynamically, and notes that higher rates typically improve quality. It describes 64 kbps as the standard G.711 rate for WebRTC. A codec’s available range is not the same as the rate every call or recording will use. See MDN’s WebRTC codec guide.

For streaming music, MDN advises choosing a codec that minimizes bandwidth while introducing as few compression artifacts as possible. The downloaded rate should fit within the available connection bandwidth while leaving room for network fluctuations and other applications. See MDN’s audio codec guide.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

File playback and live browser calls are not the same

Prerecorded audio on a web page

For a known-rate audio file, bitrate multiplied by playback duration gives a useful payload estimate. The actual transfer depends on the encoded file and how the player downloads and buffers it. A player might download audio ahead of the point the listener has reached, so the amount transferred can exceed the amount heard.

Live audio using WebRTC

WebRTC audio is real-time media, and its bitrate can change dynamically. The simple calculation is less exact when the rate varies. RFC 7874 requires WebRTC endpoints to implement Opus and PCMA/PCMU and makes discontinuous transmission optional; it does not make one bitrate universal across calls. See RFC 7874.

A WebRTC samples audio-only page reports approximate Chrome results of about 30 kbps for Opus and about 64 kbps for G.722 and PCMU. The sample says it was not tested in Opera, Firefox, Safari, or Edge, so these are limited observations—not general browser benchmarks or a prediction for a particular call. See the WebRTC audio-only sample.

Why a real data total can differ from the estimate

  • Variable or adaptive rates: WebRTC Opus can adjust its bitrate dynamically, and adaptive delivery may select among encodings. A calculation using one fixed rate will not capture every change.
  • Buffering: Count what the player downloads, not only what the listener hears. Prebuffering can transfer audio ahead of playback, but there is no universal buffer allowance.
  • Transfer overhead: Network framing, requests, media containers, and other delivery details add traffic beyond the encoded audio payload. There is no universal overhead percentage to apply.
  • Other page content: The full visit can include images, code, ads, and other media in addition to audio.
  • Connection conditions and competing use: A stream’s rate must fit the available connection, which can fluctuate and be shared with other applications.

Does audio keep using data if the page stays open?

It depends on whether playback or downloading continues. If the audio has stopped and the player is not downloading more, the audio itself is not continuing to transfer; if playback continues, or the player preloads more audio, data may still be transferred. Player behavior varies, so an open page alone is not enough to determine usage. The estimate applies to the audio downloaded, not simply the time the browser tab remains open.
