Create the segment inside a Demand Gen campaign’s ad-group audience workflow, choose Narrow, Balanced, or Broad reach, then allow about two to three days for preparation. Manage readiness, exclusions, and audience insights in Audience manager. Lookalike segments are available only to Demand Gen campaigns; optimized targeting is a separate, performance-oriented expansion option that can work alongside them.
What a Demand Gen Lookalike segment does
A Lookalike segment is a Google-defined group of users who share characteristics with people in an existing first-party seed list. The purpose is acquisition: finding prospects who resemble people already valuable to your business, rather than repeatedly targeting the original customers or visitors.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Your seed can be built from customer lists, website activity, app activity, or engagement with your YouTube content. The quality and intent of that seed determine what “similar” means in practice. A list of recent purchasers gives the system a different acquisition signal from a list containing every site visitor, so choose data that matches the conversion you want from the campaign.
Lookalike segments are a Demand Gen feature, not a general audience type that can be freely reused across every Google Ads campaign. Google’s current documentation states that they must be created while creating a Demand Gen campaign. If an audience containing one is reused in another campaign type, Google may mark that component Eligible – Limited, while other audience components can remain available.

Before you create one: prepare the seed audience
Match the seed to the conversion goal
Start with the outcome the ad group is intended to produce. For a purchase campaign, prioritize recent converters, frequent purchasers, or people who came close to completing checkout. For a lead campaign, use qualified leads or completed applications instead of every form opener. If your business has meaningful conversions from outside Google’s directly observed interactions, relevant external converters may also be added to the first-party list.
- High intent: recent customers, repeat buyers, qualified leads, completed applications, or users who reached a meaningful conversion stage.
- Near intent: people who abandoned checkout, requested pricing, or completed a strong product interaction but did not convert.
- Low intent: broad traffic, short visits, or unqualified engagement. These can be useful for awareness, but they may make an acquisition lookalike less tightly aligned with revenue.
Google does not state one universal numeric minimum seed-list size in the current material. Do not rely on an invented threshold. After you create the segment, use the eligibility warning and status shown in your account to determine whether the data is sufficient.
Optionally add a high-intent custom segment
Google documents combining a Lookalike segment with a high-intent custom segment in the same ad group. When curating that custom segment, Google suggests using 10–15 of your top-converting search terms. This is a Google recommendation, not an independent performance benchmark. Select terms that describe the problem, product, or solution associated with the conversion rather than a long list of loosely related queries.
How to create a Lookalike segment in Demand Gen
The creation controls appear during Demand Gen campaign and ad-group audience setup. Labels can change as Google updates the interface, but the current workflow is:
- Create or select a Demand Gen campaign. In Google Ads, start a new Demand Gen campaign or open an existing one that supports the audience setup. Lookalike segments must be created in this campaign workflow.
- Open the ad group’s audience settings. Add an audience at the ad-group level. Audience choices are configured for each ad group, so keep the audience strategy and the creative intent of that ad group coherent.
- Choose “New audience.” In the Audience dialog, select New audience rather than applying only an existing audience definition.
- Open the Lookalike segment selector. To include a segment, use the Lookalike segment control, find an existing segment, or start creating one from an eligible first-party seed.
- Select the seed and reach setting. Choose the prepared customer, website, app, or YouTube-engagement data, then set Narrow, Balanced, or Broad reach according to the similarity-versus-scale decision described below.
- Save the audience. Confirm the segment and any other audience signals, then save the ad-group audience. Check the campaign’s targeting and creative settings before publishing.
- Plan for preparation time. Google recommends creating the campaign and Lookalike segment two to three days before the intended start. The segment may need that time to populate and become ready.
Creation and readiness are separate events. Saving the audience does not mean the segment is immediately available for delivery; use Audience manager to verify its status before interpreting early campaign results.

Choose Narrow, Balanced, or Broad reach
Google documents three reach choices. The percentages are approximate aims for the share of users in the ad’s target location, not guaranteed audience sizes or delivery commitments.
| Reach option | Approximate aim | Primary trade-off | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Narrow | About 2.5% of users in the ad’s target location | Highest similarity priority; less potential scale | New-customer acquisition where qualification and close resemblance matter more than volume |
| Balanced | About 5% of users in the ad’s target location | Middle position between similarity and reach | A starting point when you need enough scale to learn without immediately maximizing expansion |
| Broad | About 10% of users in the ad’s target location | Maximum reach; people can be less similar to the seed | Awareness or demand-generation goals where additional volume is acceptable and conversion quality can be monitored |
The percentages describe the intended pool in the selected location, not the number of impressions your campaign will receive. A small budget, restrictive creative, bids, policy limits, or limited inventory can produce delivery well below any of these aims. Conversely, Broad should not be treated as a promise that every reachable user is similar to the seed.

- Choose Narrow when the seed is highly valuable, the conversion has a high cost, or poor-fit leads create operational waste.
- Choose Balanced when you need a controlled first test and have enough conversion volume to evaluate both efficiency and scale.
- Choose Broad when reach is strategically important, your measurement can separate qualified from unqualified outcomes, and you accept weaker similarity as the price of more prospects.
If you change reach, record the date and keep other major variables stable where possible. Otherwise, a later change in creative, budget, bidding, or landing page can obscure whether performance moved because of the segment’s reach setting.
How to include or exclude segments
Include a Lookalike segment
In the ad-group audience dialog, open the Lookalike segment selector, find the segment, select it, and save. You can pair the segment with other audience signals, such as the documented high-intent custom segment, when that combination supports the same creative and conversion goal.
Exclude a Lookalike segment
Use the Exclusions selector in the same audience workflow. Find the segment to remove from eligibility, select it, and save. Exclusions are useful when an ad group is intended for a defined prospect pool and you do not want overlap with a separate audience strategy. Decide what the exclusion means operationally before applying it: excluding existing customers, for example, is a different objective from excluding people already receiving another campaign’s message.

Keep audience logic understandable
Document the seed, reach choice, inclusions, exclusions, campaign objective, and launch date for each ad group. Avoid combining unrelated audiences merely to make the targeting list look larger. A clear structure makes it easier to identify whether a result came from similarity-based prospecting, another audience signal, or a later expansion setting.
Check readiness and manage the segment in Audience manager
After saving the campaign, open Tools > Shared library > Audience manager > Your data segments. This is where you check the segment’s status and inspect available information.
| Status or signal | What it indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Populating | The segment is still being prepared. | Allow the recommended two-to-three-day preparation window before judging availability. |
| Complete | The segment has finished preparation and can be evaluated for use. | Confirm that the intended Demand Gen ad group is using it and then monitor delivery and conversions. |
| Seed list too small | The supplied data does not currently meet Google’s eligibility requirements. | Review the source list, consent and data quality, and the warning in the account. Do not substitute an unofficial minimum-size number. |
| Inactive | The segment is not currently active for delivery. | Inspect its source, campaign association, and account alerts before changing targeting. |
Google may alert you when your data does not fulfill the requirements. Treat the account status and warning as the authoritative diagnosis for that segment because eligibility can depend on the particular data source and account context.
Use segment insights without over-interpreting them
Lookalike segment insights can show affinity categories, in-market categories, age, gender, geography, devices, and other breakdowns. Use these views to understand who the model associates with the seed and to identify creative or landing-page opportunities. They describe audience composition; they are not proof that a demographic or category caused a conversion, nor do they replace conversion reporting.
Lookalike segments versus optimized targeting
These controls answer different questions:
| Control | How it works | What it is not | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lookalike segment | Finds users who resemble a first-party seed audience, with a selected similarity-and-reach setting. | Not a guarantee that every user resembles the seed equally; not a universal audience type for every campaign. | Structured prospecting based on known customers, converters, site/app activity, or YouTube engagement. |
| Optimized targeting | Uses selected audience segments or keywords as signals and can explore users beyond those signals who appear more likely to convert. | Not a strict similarity boundary. Google notes it may reduce or stop serving traffic on the original signals if it finds better-performing traffic elsewhere. | Performance-oriented expansion when additional conversion opportunities matter more than keeping delivery tightly similar to the seed. |
Google says the two approaches can work well together. A sensible test keeps the audience strategy and creative intent coherent at the ad-group level, then uses available reporting to separate performance where possible. If you need to know whether similarity or expansion is driving results, avoid changing both controls and the creative at the same time.

A testing and management plan
1. Define the success event before launch
Choose the conversion that represents business value, not merely the easiest event to record. Write down the acceptable cost, quality criteria, and the time window in which a conversion is expected. This prevents a Broad segment from appearing successful solely because it generated inexpensive but unqualified actions.
2. Build the seed around that event
Use recent converters, frequent purchasers, qualified leads, or near-converters that align with the selected success event. If the seed contains several intent levels, label them so you know what signal the Lookalike model is receiving.
3. Start with a deliberate reach choice
Narrow is a defensible starting point for expensive or highly qualified conversions; Balanced provides a middle test; Broad is appropriate when reach is part of the objective and measurement can absorb lower similarity. The documented 2.5%, 5%, and 10% aims help describe the intended scale, but they do not determine your actual delivery.
4. Allow preparation before making judgments
Create the campaign and segment two to three days before launch. During that period, check Audience manager rather than treating an unfinished segment as a failed campaign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute5. Hold the test structure steady
Keep the landing page, conversion definition, major creative promise, and budget logic comparable when testing reach options. Record any changes to exclusions, optimized targeting, geography, or bidding because each can affect results independently of the Lookalike setting.
Best Value
6. Evaluate quality as well as volume
- Compare completed conversions and qualified outcomes, not just clicks or impressions.
- Check whether lead quality, purchase value, or downstream completion changes as reach expands.
- Review geography, device, age, gender, affinity, and in-market insights for creative and allocation clues.
- Watch for overlap with existing customer or prospecting campaigns when exclusions are not applied.
Troubleshooting common problems
The segment is still populating when the campaign should start
Creation does not provide instant readiness. Check Audience manager and allow the two-to-three-day preparation period Google recommends. If the segment remains unavailable after that window, read the account alert and verify the seed source instead of repeatedly recreating the audience.
The account says “seed list too small”
Google does not publish one universal numeric minimum in the current guidance. Review whether the list contains enough eligible, usable first-party data for this account and conversion goal, then follow the warning shown in Audience manager. Improve the source by focusing on meaningful converters or near-converters; do not pad it with unrelated low-intent users merely to increase a count.
The segment is marked “Eligible – Limited” in another campaign
Lookalike segments are limited to Demand Gen. Reuse in another campaign type can produce that status even while the other audience components remain available. Move the Lookalike strategy to a Demand Gen campaign or use a campaign-type-appropriate audience rather than assuming the segment will function identically elsewhere.
Broad reach produces more traffic but weaker results
Broad is designed to maximize reach and can include people less similar to the seed. Check qualified conversion rate and downstream value, not only the increase in volume. If quality is unacceptable, test Balanced or Narrow with the same seed and measurement, or improve the seed toward recent high-intent converters.
Optimized targeting appears to ignore the selected audience
That behavior can be consistent with its design. Optimized targeting treats audience segments and keywords as signals and may seek users beyond them; Google notes it can reduce or stop serving traffic on the original signals when it finds better-performing traffic elsewhere. If strict similarity is required, evaluate the Lookalike setup separately and do not describe optimized targeting as a hard boundary.
Operational checklist
- Confirm the campaign type is Demand Gen.
- Choose a first-party seed tied to the intended conversion.
- Consider recent converters, frequent purchasers, qualified leads, or strong near-converters before broad traffic.
- Optionally pair the Lookalike with a high-intent custom segment using 10–15 top-converting search terms.
- Create the segment in the ad-group audience workflow by selecting New audience.
- Choose Narrow, Balanced, or Broad with the similarity-versus-scale trade-off documented.
- Add exclusions deliberately and record why they are present.
- Allow two to three days for preparation.
- Check Tools > Shared library > Audience manager > Your data segments for status and alerts.
- Use insights to understand composition, while judging success with qualified conversion data.
- Keep optimized targeting conceptually separate from similarity-based targeting when analyzing results.
- Remember that Lookalike segments are not a general cross-campaign audience feature.
What to remember
A Demand Gen Lookalike segment is only as useful as the first-party signal behind it. Build the seed around people who represent the conversion you want, create the segment inside the Demand Gen ad-group workflow, and choose reach according to your tolerance for reduced similarity. Verify readiness in Audience manager before launch, use insights to refine messaging, and treat optimized targeting as a separate expansion mechanism rather than a synonym for lookalike matching.
