An alias is an alternate @icloud.com address attached to your existing iCloud Mail account—not a separate inbox or Apple Account. Mail sent to it normally arrives in your primary inbox.
What an iCloud Mail alias does
Apple describes an email alias as “an alternate email address” that works like a nickname and can help keep your real email address private. A standard iCloud Mail alias ends in @icloud.com and is linked to your primary iCloud Mail account. You can send and receive messages through it on iCloud.com and on devices where Mail is enabled in iCloud settings. Messages sent to the alias go to your primary inbox by default. Apple says your email address is not shown to recipients when you send from an alias.

Aliases are useful when you want a different address for a particular purpose while keeping one underlying iCloud Mail account. They cannot be changed into separate accounts or used to create another Apple Account.
Create an iCloud Mail alias
- Go to icloud.com/mail and sign in to your Apple Account if prompted.
- Above the mailbox list, open the Settings menu and choose Settings.
- Select Add alias.
- Enter the address text, a label, and a full name. The address text must be 3–20 characters. The label identifies the alias in your list, while the full name appears in the From field of outgoing messages.
- Select Create.
Change, disable, or delete an alias
In iCloud.com Mail, open Settings and select the alias in the list. From there, you can edit its label or full name and save the change. You cannot change the alias address itself.

Disable an alias temporarily
Select the alias, check Disable alias, and save. To start using it again, clear the checkbox and save. Disabling is reversible, but while it is disabled, messages sent to that address are returned to the sender.
Delete an alias permanently
Select the alias, choose Delete alias, and confirm. Deletion is permanent, and messages sent to the deleted address are returned to the sender. If you have three aliases and delete one, Apple requires a seven-day wait before you can create another.

Limits and account-specific exceptions
- After setting up your primary iCloud Mail address, you can create up to three standard
@icloud.comaliases. - Alias address text must be 3–20 characters.
- Aliases cannot be transferred, converted to primary accounts, or used to create separate Apple Accounts.
- Apple documents a legacy exception for accounts that kept five MobileMe aliases when they moved to iCloud: those accounts retain five, but deleting one does not make a replacement available.
Standard aliases, Hide My Email, and custom domains
These are distinct ways to use alternate email addresses; the right choice depends on whether you want a chosen iCloud address, a randomly generated one, or an address using a domain you own.
