You can create a standard Amazon customer account without adding a mobile number when the live sign-up form accepts email and lets you skip the phone prompt. Use an email address you can access, complete any verification Amazon requests, and select Skip or Not now if that option appears. Amazon staff describe phone entry as optional, but the prompt can vary and some users report being unable to bypass it.

What if Amazon makes the phone number prompt look mandatory?
Amazon staff have stated that a mobile number is optional during customer-account creation. However, customer forum posts also describe sign-up attempts where users saw a phone prompt without an obvious way to continue. The available guidance does not establish that every marketplace, device, or registration attempt will show the same controls. See Amazon’s account help and the Amazon customer forum discussion.

Buyer sign-up is different from seller registration
These instructions apply to an ordinary Amazon customer account. Seller Central has a separate registration process: Amazon lists a phone number among the requirements for US seller registration, alongside financial and tax information. Buyer-account guidance should not be treated as a way to avoid that seller requirement: Amazon Seller Central registration requirements.

- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
Phone number prompts and two-step verification are separate
Skipping a number during sign-up does not mean every later security check can be skipped. Amazon’s customer help says one-time access codes can be sent to the email address or mobile number set up on an account. For two-step verification, Amazon KDP support describes using an authenticator app to generate codes without cell signal; this is an option for verification, not a guaranteed way around a phone prompt during account creation: Amazon KDP two-step verification help.
Amazon Business sign-up may show a skip option
Amazon Business guidance says users can skip adding a phone number in the Business registration flow it describes. That is useful context, but it does not establish that the ordinary consumer sign-up form will have identical screens or options: Amazon Business registration guidance.
