For a simple browser-native option, use Firefox’s built-in password manager. Choose Bitwarden if you want a Firefox extension and an encrypted vault you can access across devices; choose Dashlane for its documented Firefox extension and passkey workflow; or choose KeePassXC if you prefer a local database and are comfortable setting up desktop-to-browser integration. The available documentation does not establish a universal winner or support a claim that these options were hands-on tested in September 2026.
How to choose a Firefox password manager
The main choice is where your passwords live and how you want to reach them—not a measured difference in autofill speed or reliability. Firefox’s built-in manager is browser-integrated. Bitwarden and Dashlane provide account-based vaults and Firefox extensions. KeePassXC stores credentials in a local encrypted database and connects to Firefox through an extension.

What each option is like to use
Firefox’s built-in password manager: the least setup
Firefox can save usernames and passwords, fill them on return visits, and let you manage saved logins. Mozilla also documents password generation, breach alerts, password import from other browsers, and syncing passwords across devices with a free Mozilla account. This is a natural fit if Firefox is your main browser and browser-integrated storage meets your needs. See Mozilla’s feature description.
Bitwarden: a third-party extension with device access
Bitwarden’s Firefox extension listing describes an encrypted vault, autofill, passkey management, sharing, and device access. Bitwarden’s product page also describes end-to-end encryption, password generation, passkey storage, cross-device availability, and FIDO2/WebAuthn authentication, including a hardware security key or passkey. These are product claims from Bitwarden and the extension listing; the available sources do not independently assess them or establish current tier limits and pricing. Dashlane: documented Firefox and passkey support
Dashlane’s support documentation identifies Firefox as an officially supported browser and explains setting up the extension and importing data from a browser or another password manager. It says the extension can autofill login credentials and passkeys from an encrypted vault. The same page describes signing in with a Master Password, device-specific PIN, or security key, and notes that Dashlane may not work in China because of Chinese data privacy laws. These are Dashlane’s statements; check its current availability and plan limits for your circumstances. Dashlane’s setup guide

How to move saved passwords from Firefox to Bitwarden
Bitwarden’s Firefox listing and product page establish the extension and its capabilities, but the sources cited here do not document a current, exact Firefox-to-Bitwarden import path. Avoid assuming menu names or export steps from an older release. Use Bitwarden’s current import instructions and Firefox’s current password-management interface, and protect any exported password file as sensitive data: anyone who can read an unencrypted export may be able to read the logins in it. After importing, confirm that the expected accounts appear in the vault before removing any source copy.

Passkeys are distinct from passwords, and moving password data does not necessarily transfer passkeys in the same way. 1Password’s support documentation says exporting desktop data does not carry passkeys in the same manner; you may need to recreate passkeys at the websites and save them elsewhere. This is a migration caveat, not enough evidence to rank 1Password as a Firefox password manager. 1Password’s passkey guidance

A FIDO2 security key is an optional way to authenticate to an account when that service supports it; it is not a required password-manager accessory. Bitwarden documents FIDO2/WebAuthn options, and Dashlane lists security-key login among its methods. Before buying a key, check that it works with the accounts and devices you plan to use; the sources here do not compare models.
Security context and sensible setup
Use unique passwords rather than reusing one password across sites, and obtain browser extensions from Mozilla Add-ons or the vendor’s official page. Check support for your Firefox version, operating system, and intended passkey workflow. Autofill safeguards and behavior can vary with the product, version, and configuration, so do not assume all extensions behave identically.
A 2020 USENIX Security Symposium paper by Oesch and co-authors reported a network-injection password-harvesting attack against Firefox’s built-in manager as tested in that research. The paper also discussed risks in some extension-manager scenarios when user interaction before autofill was disabled. Its finding is historical: it does not establish that a current 2026 Firefox release remains vulnerable, nor does it test current releases of the options compared here. Read the 2020 USENIX paper.
