To play videos randomly on a YouTube Live stream, make the playlist in encoder software—not in YouTube’s viewer-side playlist controls. In OBS Studio, add a VLC Video source, load your local video files, and enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. YouTube’s own Loop control repeats playback for someone watching a playlist; it does not randomize the feed sent into a live broadcast.
Why YouTube’s playlist controls do not randomize a live broadcast
YouTube Help’s instructions for looping a video or playlist apply to ordinary viewing: a viewer opens a video in a playlist and uses the playlist’s Loop control. A live stream works differently. YouTube receives a feed from an encoder, so the encoder must choose and sequence the videos before they reach YouTube.

Choose an OBS source for what you want to repeat

OBS documents Media Source as a single-file source with a Loop option, while VLC Video handles a playlist of media items. If you need a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video rather than adding multiple ordinary Media Sources and expecting them to behave like one shuffled playlist. The VLC Video source is available only when VLC is installed.

Set up a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Open OBS and create or select the scene that will carry the video output. OBS’s Sources Guide describes scenes as the place to assemble sources.
- Add the video playlist. In the scene’s Sources dock, add a VLC Video source. In its properties, add the local video files you want to include.
- Enable the playlist controls. Turn on Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback order and Loop Playlist to start the sequence again after it reaches the last file. OBS’s guide lists shuffle as off by default and loop as on by default, so verify both settings rather than relying on defaults.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, then start streaming from OBS. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key authorizes YouTube to accept it. Treat the stream key like a password and do not share it.
- Check the feed before the broadcast. Review the preview in Live Control Room. Test representative video motion and audio, confirm the event is reachable, and monitor audio and video quality while live. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover previewing and monitoring; its encoder setup guide explains the connection, and live stream settings help covers stream configuration.
Test the playlist and protect the broadcast
Confirm the files and shuffle behavior
OBS’s documented source supports local media files. The guide does not establish that arbitrary YouTube watch-page links can be added to the VLC playlist, nor does it specify the shuffle algorithm, whether a restart creates a fresh order, or identical behavior across operating systems and software versions. Test your actual files and installed OBS/VLC versions before scheduling a broadcast. The source guide is dated January 11, 2022, so check the controls’ placement in your current build.
Check rights before streaming
Having a file on your computer does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast its video or audio. Confirm that you own or are authorized to stream every item in the playlist, including music and other embedded material, before going live.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the Sources dock again. OBS requires VLC for this source.
- Only one video repeats: check that you added the files to a VLC Video playlist. The standard Media Source is documented as a single-file source.
- The playlist does not shuffle: open the VLC Video source properties and confirm Shuffle Playlist is enabled. OBS documents it as off by default.
- The sequence stops at the final file: confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents it as on by default, but verify the actual setting.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: check that OBS has the stream URL and stream key for the selected Live Control Room stream. Keep the key private; if you suspect it has been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS.
- The preview has missing or poor audio/video: test the actual playlist files and check the Live Control Room preview before the event. Monitor stream health during the broadcast rather than assuming the local preview guarantees a successful YouTube feed.
