You can use an M3U playlist as the source for a 24/7 YouTube live stream, but scheduling an event in YouTube Studio will not play the playlist by itself. You need a playout tool that can read your particular M3U entries, plus an encoder or cloud service that sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube. The workflow is: validate the playlist, connect the playout output to YouTube with its server URL and stream key, check the incoming preview, then start the event.
First choose what “24/7 channel” means
YouTube’s event and transmission are separate pieces. A liveBroadcast represents the public event page; a liveStream represents the settings used to transmit video. YouTube’s API guide describes both a continuous 24/7 broadcast design and recurring scheduled events that reuse one stream configuration. [Google for Developers]

One continuous channel page
Use a continuous broadcast design when viewers should find one ongoing live destination. The playout and encoder must keep supplying the feed. A scheduled public event alone does not keep video playing or turn an M3U into a broadcast.

Use recurring scheduled broadcasts if you want viewers to see distinct event pages, such as separate programs or sessions. YouTube’s API guide describes recurring events sharing stream settings, with one event live at a time. That is different from keeping one broadcast live while sending other content to a separate broadcast; choose the design that fits how viewers should access the channel.

Check that your M3U can actually be played
M3U is a playlist format, not a guarantee that every listed source is accessible or playable by every tool. Entries may use different media formats or access requirements. You need a playout solution that can read the playlist and produce a continuous audio/video output accepted by your encoder. Test the exact playlist and sources you intend to use; compatibility with one M3U does not establish compatibility with another.
Validate before scheduling
- Confirm you have permission to access and retransmit the playlist’s media. A URL working in a player does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its content on YouTube.
- Check each playlist entry in the chosen playout software, including the first and last items and any entries that might fail or expire.
- Confirm that the tool can handle the source’s format and any access restrictions, and that it can keep producing output as entries change.
- Let it run long enough to check that picture and sound remain continuous, and observe how it behaves when an entry is unavailable.
FFmpeg documents HLS playlist and muxer capabilities, including M3U8-related output examples. That does not make a single command suitable for every IPTV M3U: input protocols, codecs, authentication and playlist behavior vary. Check the format documentation against your actual input and test it before relying on it for a live channel. [FFmpeg formats documentation]

Set up the YouTube event and encoder
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming flow and complete channel activation if prompted. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this well before the planned launch. [YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming]
- Create the event if you want it scheduled in advance. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and set its visibility and event details. For a continuous channel, decide whether you want a single public event or a recurring-event design; the event page does not provide the video feed.
- Choose and configure the playout and encoder. Load and test the M3U in software or a service that can interpret its entries. Configure the encoder to receive the playout’s audio/video output and send it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it with the playlist or share it in public troubleshooting posts.
- Start the feed and inspect YouTube’s preview. Start the playout, then the encoder if they are separate. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check that the expected picture and sound are present. For a scheduled event, click Go live when the preview is ready. - Monitor a long test before relying on it. Check playlist transitions, sound, picture, encoder restarts, network interruption and source outages. Do not assume recovery works until you have observed it with your own setup.
Choose a playout approach—and verify M3U support
YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists software, cloud services and hardware, but its listings do not establish that every option can ingest arbitrary M3U playlists. Confirm compatibility with the exact playlist and source formats before choosing a tool. [YouTube verified encoder directory]

OBS is listed by YouTube as open-source software at no charge. It can serve as an encoder component, but that listing does not establish built-in support for arbitrary M3U playlist scheduling. If your playout tool cannot send directly to YouTube, you may need to route its output into an encoder such as OBS. The computer, software and network then need to remain operational for the stream to continue.

Cloud services and hardware encoders
YouTube’s directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams. The directory does not establish their M3U input compatibility, terms or prices, so check those details with the provider. It lists the AJA HELO Plus among verified hardware encoders and describes PlayToStream as scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live; it does not say that the device accepts arbitrary M3U playlists. Confirm the needed input format before purchasing hardware.

Handle failed playlist entries and interruptions
Decide what viewers should see if an M3U entry fails, a source becomes unavailable, the encoder restarts or your internet connection drops. Depending on your setup, you may need to skip an item, switch to a fallback, restart playout or reconnect the encoder. Test each case; neither a valid YouTube event nor a working playlist guarantees automatic recovery.

Do not assume one replay for a 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will produce a single automatic archive, so do not plan on a complete replay on that assumption. If replays matter, arrange separate recordings or controlled event boundaries and verify the result in your own channel. [YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder]
Check rights and YouTube policy
Only broadcast content you are authorized to use. A playlist containing copyrighted recordings can receive claims or other enforcement even if it is continuously available from its original source. YouTube’s monetization rules also assess whether a channel’s material is original and adds value; the fact that videos are arranged in a playlist does not itself establish eligibility. Review the current YouTube copyright policies and YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around third-party material.
