You can use a JSON file to tell your own automation when to change a YouTube playlist, but YouTube does not document a feature that accepts a JSON file and applies playlist changes on a timer. A separate script or job scheduler must read the file and call the YouTube Data API. Schedule the live broadcast separately in YouTube Studio or through the Live Streaming API.
What JSON can—and cannot—schedule
A scheduled YouTube Live broadcast and a timed playlist edit are separate operations. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room schedules the broadcast. The YouTube Data API’s playlistItems methods add, update, and delete playlist entries, but the reviewed documentation does not describe uploading a JSON file to YouTube to schedule those edits or having a broadcast schedule trigger them.

In this setup, JSON is your automation’s input: it records the intended action and time. A separate script or job runner reads it, validates the entry, and makes the relevant authorized API request when due. The JSON structure below is illustrative, not a YouTube-defined schedule format.

| What you need | Use | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule the live event | YouTube Studio Live Control Room, or the Live Streaming API broadcast methods | Broadcast timing and metadata belong to the broadcast operation. Scheduling a broadcast does not itself document or trigger playlist edits. |
| Add or remove a playlist entry | YouTube Data API playlistItems.insert or playlistItems.delete |
Requests need the relevant playlist and video or playlist-item identifiers, and authorization to modify the content. |
| Move an entry | playlistItems.update |
Explicit positioning requires Manual playlist ordering and uses a zero-based position. |
| Run an edit at a chosen time | Your own script plus an external scheduler or job runner | You choose the JSON schema, host, timing mechanism, and error handling; these are not specified by YouTube as a native JSON scheduling feature. |
Prepare the playlist and identifiers
- Create or select the playlist. Record its playlist ID. Make sure the authorized account can modify that playlist and the associated content.
- Identify the videos. Record each video ID that an action will add. For an existing entry that you intend to update or delete, retain its playlist-item ID; that is distinct from the video ID.
- Decide how to handle ordering. If the automation will assign a position, set the playlist to Manual ordering. The API’s position is zero-based: position
0is first. - Set up authorized API access. Use OAuth for the channel/account that can make the requested change. The insert method lists
youtubeandyoutube.force-sslamong its accepted scopes. Request only a scope that supports the operation you need and follow Google’s authorization requirements.
Define an illustrative JSON schedule
YouTube’s API references define playlist-item request fields, not a schedule-file schema. Your application can use a structure suited to its language and scheduler. For example:

The timestamps above are examples only. Choose a timezone convention explicitly—UTC in this example—and make the scheduler interpret it consistently. Your automation should reject missing IDs, unknown action names, malformed timestamps, negative positions, and attempts to move an item when the playlist is not manually ordered. Do not put OAuth access tokens, refresh tokens, or client secrets in a schedule file that could be shared or exposed.

Add a video
For an insert, send an authorized POST request to /youtube/v3/playlistItems. The request body includes snippet.playlistId and snippet.resourceId; identify a video with kind set to youtube#video and its video ID. An illustrative body is:

Use playlistItems.update with the playlist-item id, snippet.playlistId, and snippet.resourceId; set snippet.position to the desired zero-based position. The item ID identifies the playlist entry being changed, while the resource ID identifies its video. Explicit positioning is invalid unless the playlist uses Manual ordering. Remove an item
Call playlistItems.delete for the playlist-item ID to remove that entry. Keep the ID returned when the entry was created or obtained from the playlist, and validate that the intended item still exists before treating the action as complete.
Run the changes at the intended time
- Load and validate the schedule. Parse the JSON, check its schema and identifiers, and determine which actions are due according to the timezone convention you chose.
- Have a separate scheduler invoke your program. A script, job runner, or other scheduler supplies the timing. You select the implementation and hosting environment; YouTube’s API documentation does not prescribe one.
- Execute one action at a time and record the result. Log the intended action, timestamp, API response, and error details without logging secrets. Define your own retry and duplicate-handling behavior so a rerun does not accidentally add repeated entries.
- Test on a noncritical playlist. Confirm that insert, reorder, and delete actions behave as intended before depending on them for a public event. This is prudent deployment practice, not a YouTube requirement.
- Schedule the broadcast separately. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select the Manage tab, choose Schedule stream, then create a new stream or reuse settings. Alternatively, implement broadcast scheduling through the Live Streaming API. Verify the broadcast schedule and playlist automation independently.
YouTube says a stream scheduled for later “may show up in your subscribers feed as upcoming.” That concerns visibility of the broadcast, not whether playlist changes will run. YouTube also recommends communicating the live schedule and any changes to viewers.

Limits and troubleshooting
- The playlist did not change at the scheduled time: Check that the external scheduler ran, the timestamp was interpreted in the intended timezone, and the job reached the API call. A broadcast appearing as scheduled does not run the separate playlist job.
- The API rejects the request for authorization: Confirm that OAuth authorization belongs to an account allowed to edit the target content and that the requested scope supports the operation.
- An insert request fails validation: Check that the request includes the playlist ID and a video resource with
kindequal toyoutube#videoand a valid video ID. - A position update is rejected: Confirm the playlist uses Manual ordering, the position is zero-based, and the request includes the playlist-item ID, playlist ID, and resource ID.
- A delete or update targets the wrong entry: Check that the schedule uses the playlist-item ID for the entry, not just the video ID.
- Requests stop after several actions: Review API responses and project quota use. Insert and update each list a cost of 50 quota units; do not assume repeated calls are free.
