To make a video loop seamlessly on YouTube Live, first edit its ending so it transitions naturally into its beginning, then play the file on repeat in OBS and send OBS’s output to YouTube. OBS’s Loop setting repeats playback; it does not repair a visible jump or audio break in the video. Preview the join and test the full stream before broadcasting.
What “seamless loop” means
There are two separate jobs: making the video itself join cleanly, and setting playback software to repeat it. The join is the point where the final frame and audio give way to the first frame and audio. If that transition is abrupt, enabling Loop will repeat the abrupt transition every time.

Check the source at the end-to-start boundary. Look for a flash, jump in framing, sudden change in movement, silence, a click, or a change in background sound. If something feels discontinuous, revise the edit or choose footage that naturally returns to its opening state. The right edit depends on the material; no playback checkbox can guarantee an imperceptible join for arbitrary footage.
Choose how OBS should repeat the video

With a playlist, check the transition between every adjacent pair of clips as well as the final clip back to the first. A playlist loop repeats the sequence, but does not make mismatched clips blend together.

Set up a single repeating file in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will contain the video. A scene is the composition OBS sends to the encoder; check that no unintended source obscures the video.
- Add the video source. In the Sources panel, choose + → Media Source, give it a recognizable name, and select the local file. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video formats.
- Enable repeat playback. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. This makes playback start again after the file finishes.
- Check the scene and sound. Confirm the video is framed as intended and that its audio is present at a suitable level. If it should fill the canvas, adjust its size and position in the scene and inspect the preview rather than assuming the source’s dimensions match the canvas.
- Preview the join. Let the file play through its ending and into its beginning. Watch and listen at the boundary. If the transition is not clean, change the source edit; toggling Loop again will not fix it.
Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match VLC’s bitness to OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + → VLC Video.
- Add the local video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the whole sequence should repeat. Use shuffle only if changing the order is intentional.
- Preview every transition, including the final item back to the first. Fix any unsuitable transition in the source material or playlist order before going live.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select the stream in Live Control Room.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is offered as a service. Otherwise, choose the custom-server option and enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check that the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or announcing it.
- Use YouTube’s live controls to start the public broadcast when the preview and stream status are ready. Starting the encoder sends its output to YouTube; it is distinct from the source file simply playing locally.
Encoder settings and connection checks
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and settings your encoder and internet connection can sustain. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, recommends RTMPS, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by resolution, so there is no single bitrate that suits every stream. Select the applicable resolution-specific value from YouTube’s encoder guidance, then test for a stable connection rather than choosing a setting your upload connection cannot maintain.
- Keyframes: set the interval to two seconds where the encoder permits it; do not exceed four seconds, according to YouTube’s guidance.
- Rate control: use CBR, as recommended by YouTube.
- Codec and bitrate: use a codec supported by the chosen YouTube ingest method and a bitrate appropriate to the output resolution. Do not assume the same bitrate is suitable at every resolution.
- Transport: use RTMPS when available, as YouTube recommends.
Test before the intended broadcast
Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the real event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. A static test screen may not reveal problems that appear in moving footage or continuous audio.

- Confirm the expected picture, framing, and audio reach YouTube.
- Check Live Control Room’s stream health and messages before and during the broadcast.
- Confirm the encoder remains connected through at least one complete loop, or through the whole playlist and its return to the first item.
End the broadcast and understand the archive limit
When finished, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive statement is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback or connectivity during the broadcast.
Troubleshoot common loop problems
