For a single video where its video stream is already compatible with the output container, a basic command is ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4. For a playlist, first choose how to join the files: use the concat demuxer when their streams are compatible and you want to avoid re-encoding video, or the concat filter when the inputs need normalization or re-encoding.
Encode a video’s audio as AAC
FFmpeg does not choose the audio codec based on the filename extension alone. Set it explicitly with -c:a aac. The following example encodes audio as AAC while copying compatible video unchanged:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4-c:a aacselects FFmpeg’s AAC encoder for audio.-b:a 192ksets an illustrative audio bitrate; it is not a universal optimum. Choose a setting that suits the source and playback destination.-c:v copycopies the video stream without decoding and re-encoding it. It works only when the stream is compatible with the output container.
Without -c:v copy or another explicit video codec setting, FFmpeg may use the output muxer’s default video encoder. That can re-encode the video and take longer. If you need re-encoding, specify the video encoder and any required settings deliberately.

FFmpeg offers two main approaches. The right one depends on whether the inputs have compatible streams and whether you need to re-encode or normalize them.

FFmpeg’s concat FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and distinguishes the concat demuxer as an option for suitable inputs when you want to avoid re-encoding. Inspect the files before choosing; a single command cannot reliably handle every combination.
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
1. Create the playlist file
Save a plain-text file named playlist.txt with one entry per input, in the order you want the tracks to appear:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4The -f concat option selects the concat demuxer, and -i playlist.txt supplies its input list. -safe 0 permits paths outside the demuxer’s restricted safe subset. Use it only with a playlist file you control. As with the single-file example, the video copy option requires a compatible video stream and output container.
This is a template, not a command verified against your files. If FFmpeg reports mismatched streams, unsupported codecs, or container errors, use explicit stream mapping or switch to a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes the streams that need adjustment.

Use the concat filter when inputs need processing
The concat filter is the more appropriate route when the inputs have different stream layouts or need normalization, filtering, or re-encoding. It operates on decoded streams, so do not pair it with streamcopy for the streams being filtered. Build the filter and output options around the actual inputs: their video dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, and which streams are present can affect the required filter graph and mapping.
There is no universally correct concat-filter command without knowing those file details. Consult the FFmpeg concat documentation for the filter syntax, then specify the output video encoder and AAC audio encoder explicitly. Test the result across track boundaries, since timestamp or duration differences can affect continuity.

What changes when the source audio is MP3?
If the source audio is MP3 and you need AAC output, FFmpeg must decode the MP3 and encode the result as AAC. That is transcoding, not streamcopy. The FFmpeg Project describes transcoding as decoding a stream and encoding it again; lossy-to-lossy transcoding can reduce quality. If a source already contains AAC and the output supports it, copying that audio may avoid another lossy encoding generation—but it would not convert MP3 audio to AAC.
Streamcopy is fast and does not reduce quality through another encoding step, but it cannot change the audio codec or apply audio filters. Use an explicit AAC encoder when AAC is required.
Choose an audio bitrate with the destination in mind
The 192k value in the examples is illustrative, not a recommendation established for every playlist, source, listener, or platform. The FFmpeg AAC encoder documentation includes options for bitrate and variable-bitrate modes. Its listed VBR figures are approximate encoder reference values by channel, not comparative quality measurements or universal targets: mode 1 is 32 kbps per channel, mode 2 is 40 kbps, mode 3 is 48–56 kbps, mode 4 is 64 kbps, and mode 5 is about 80–96 kbps.
Check the requirements of the actual playback destination and consider the source audio and channel count when choosing a setting. A higher bitrate does not restore detail already lost in a compressed source.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The output still uses MP3: Confirm the command includes
-c:a aacand that you are checking the output file rather than an input. - FFmpeg rejects streamcopy or the output container: The copied video or audio codec may not be supported by that container. Re-encode the incompatible stream with an explicit encoder, or choose a suitable container for the destination.
- The concat demuxer reports stream or codec differences: The inputs may not have compatible stream layouts. Normalize and re-encode with the concat filter, or prepare compatible inputs first.
- There are gaps between tracks: The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps sequentially, but differing stream lengths can produce gaps. Inspect track durations and test the joins; use a filter workflow if processing is needed to achieve the intended result.
- The command takes much longer than expected: If video is being re-encoded, processing can take longer than streamcopy. Use
-c:v copyonly when the video is compatible and does not need filtering or normalization.
