The safest crypto-wallet backup is an offline, handwritten or metal record created during setup on the wallet’s own trusted interface. Copy every recovery word in the exact order shown, verify it on the wallet device, and store it somewhere private and protected from fire, water, theft and accidental loss. Never photograph the phrase, put it in cloud storage, type it into a phone or computer, paste it into a website, or disclose it to support staff.
Your recovery phrase is not a password reset code. It is the ordered backup from which your wallet and its private keys can be restored. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet and spend its funds, while losing the phrase can make funds permanently inaccessible even if the hardware device itself is replaceable.

What a recovery phrase is—and why it must stay secret
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or wallet backup, is an ordered list of words generated by a cryptocurrency wallet. The wallet uses that list to recreate the accounts and private keys associated with it. The order is part of the backup: a set of the right words in the wrong sequence is not the same wallet.

Trezor documentation describes two common backup formats. BIP39 backups contain 12 or 24 words, while SLIP39 backups contain 20 words. The format and length are determined by the wallet; do not shorten, rearrange or “correct” a phrase yourself.

Possession of the phrase is effectively possession of the wallet. Bitcoin.org warns that anyone who obtains a recovery phrase can access the corresponding bitcoins. Ledger likewise states that losing the phrase can mean losing the cryptocurrency and that anyone who has it can access the accounts. Treat the words as a master key, not as information that can safely be shared with a technician, exchange, friend or family member.
Prepare a trusted setup before generating the backup
Use the wallet’s own initialization flow
Start with a new or properly reset wallet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the wallet device or its official, verified companion application. Let the wallet generate the phrase. Never choose words yourself, use a phrase found online, or reuse a phrase from another wallet.
For a hardware wallet, the words should be displayed on the device’s trusted screen. A computer or phone may guide you through menus, but it should not be the place where you first see or enter the phrase. If the setup process asks you to type the words into a website or ordinary computer form, stop and verify that you are following the genuine recovery flow; Trezor’s guidance is to enter a backup only when prompted by the Trezor device itself.
Control the room
Create the backup in private. Turn off cameras and screen-recording tools, keep other people from watching, and remove unnecessary phones, tablets and laptops from the area. Do not dictate the words aloud or let anyone transcribe them for you. A support representative, seller or friend who asks to see the phrase is asking for the credential that controls the funds.

- DURABLE AND INDESTRUCTIBLE: Made with grade 304 Steel, it's the long term solution to helping you safely store and backup your wallet’s seed phrase due to its resistance to corrosion. The various screws present in the tablet help protect it against deformation. It is also designed to have a fireproof threshold of house fires.
Step-by-step: create and secure an offline wallet backup
- Generate the phrase. During first-time setup, choose the wallet’s “create new wallet” or equivalent option. Allow the device to generate the recovery words. Do not import an existing phrase unless you are deliberately restoring a wallet and have confirmed that the backup standard is compatible.
- Record every word offline. Use the supplied backup card or a purpose-made metal backup plate. Copy each word exactly as displayed and preserve the device’s numbering. Check spelling, repeated words and the total word count. Do not type the phrase into a note, password manager, spreadsheet, message, website or software wallet.
- Keep the phrase out of digital view. Do not take a photograph or screenshot. Do not scan it, email it, save it in cloud storage or upload it to Dropbox or another file service. Bitcoin.org specifically advises against photographs and cloud services; Trezor lists screenshots, photographs, email and Dropbox as unacceptable digital copies.
- Complete the device verification. Use the wallet’s built-in confirmation or recovery-check procedure if one is provided. The device may ask you to select words or enter positions to confirm that your transcription is accurate. Perform this check on the wallet’s trusted interface, not by sending the phrase to another device or person.
- Store the record privately. Put the card or metal plate in a location with controlled access. It should be protected from casual discovery, fire, water, theft and accidental disposal. Do not label the container with words such as “crypto seed” if that would advertise what it contains.
- Decide whether a second copy is justified. A second physical copy in another secure location can protect against the loss of one building, but it also creates another location that must remain secret. Make a duplicate only if both storage sites can be secured to the same standard; never keep one copy in an easily accessible drawer merely for convenience.
- Keep the phrase out of routine operation. Normal sending, receiving and balance checking should not require the recovery words. If an app, website, pop-up or message asks for them unexpectedly, close it and verify the request through the wallet manufacturer’s documented instructions.
- Document only non-secret details. You may record the wallet brand, backup standard, word count and the location of the sealed backup separately, provided that this note does not contain any words or clues that reduce the phrase’s secrecy.
Paper card or metal plate?
Both are offline options, but they solve different physical risks. Paper is simple and inexpensive; metal is intended to withstand conditions that can destroy paper. Choose based on the threats at your storage locations, how privately you can create the record, and whether you can protect every copy.
| Factor | Paper backup card | Metal backup plate |
|---|---|---|
| Fire and water resistance | Paper can burn, tear, fade or become unreadable when wet. It needs a dry, fire-protected container. | Designed to provide greater resistance to fire and water than paper; Ledger identifies metal storage as protection against the elements. |
| Privacy while creating it | Can be written quietly with an ordinary pen, with little equipment or noise. | May require stamping or engraving, which can take longer and may be more noticeable in a shared space. |
| Transcription | Usually fastest because the words are handwritten directly. | Stamping or arranging letters can be slower; verify each character and word position carefully. |
| Cost | A wallet backup card is generally the lower-cost physical option; exact prices vary by supplier and region. | Usually costs more than a card because it uses a durable metal plate or tile; no universal price applies. |
| Second-copy planning | Easy to duplicate, but each additional copy increases the number of places that must stay secret and protected. | More expensive and less convenient to duplicate, which can encourage a smaller, better-controlled number of copies. |
| Main failure mode | Physical deterioration, loss or discovery if stored casually. | Discovery or transcription mistakes; durability does not protect against someone reading the plate. |
Whichever material you use, secrecy still matters more than durability. A fireproof plate left in an unlocked room is not a safe backup, and a carefully hidden paper card can be safer than metal that many people can access.
Understand BIP39 and SLIP39 before restoring a wallet
A replacement device must support the same backup standard and recovery format as the original wallet. Trezor documents BIP39 backups of 12 or 24 words and SLIP39 backups of 20 words. The number of words alone is not enough to identify a wallet: the standard, derivation settings and the manufacturer’s recovery procedure also matter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Backup standard | Documented word length | What to verify before recovery |
|---|---|---|
| BIP39 | 12 or 24 words | That the replacement wallet supports BIP39 and that you follow its documented account and network recovery flow. |
| SLIP39 | 20 words | That the replacement wallet supports SLIP39 and, where applicable, the required share or recovery arrangement. |
Do not assume that every wallet accepts every phrase. A phrase generated by one standard may be rejected by another device, or it may appear to restore an empty account if the required settings differ. Keep the original manufacturer’s instructions with your non-secret records so that you know which recovery path to use without experimenting online.

Digital copies that create avoidable exposure
A digital copy can be stolen without anyone entering your home. Malware, a compromised email account, cloud synchronization, browser history, screenshots, backups and remote-support tools can all create additional places where the phrase may exist. Once copied, you may not know how many replicas remain.
- Photos and screenshots: A camera roll may synchronize automatically or be included in a device backup. Bitcoin.org and Trezor both warn against this practice.
- Cloud notes and file services: A cloud account, shared folder or Dropbox-style service turns an offline secret into an online credential.
- Email and messaging: Messages may be forwarded, indexed, retained on multiple servers or exposed if an account is compromised.
- Password managers and encrypted notes: Even if a service offers encryption, entering the phrase on an internet-connected device creates a digital attack surface. The safest procedure is not to create the copy.
- Websites and forms: Phishing pages often imitate wallet support or recovery screens. A legitimate service should not need your phrase to check a transaction or troubleshoot a device.
- Software-wallet imports: Ledger warns that importing a hardware-wallet phrase into software can expose it to online threats. Keep a hardware-wallet phrase confined to the compatible hardware recovery process.
How to store the backup against physical threats
Choose controlled access
Use a location where only the intended owner can reach the record. A locked safe, secured cabinet or other access-controlled place is preferable to an open desk, bedside drawer or vehicle. Consider who can enter the room, who knows the container exists and whether visitors, contractors or roommates could discover it.
Plan for fire, water and destruction
Paper needs protection from moisture, heat and fading. Metal can improve resistance to the elements, but it still needs a private location and can be stolen. A sealed container, fire-resistant storage and a separate secure location can address different hazards; none of them substitutes for secrecy.

One copy risks total loss if the location is destroyed. Multiple copies reduce that single-location risk but increase the number of opportunities for discovery. If you make a second copy, place it in a genuinely independent, access-controlled location and keep an inventory of where copies exist without writing down the phrase itself.

What to do if the hardware wallet is lost, damaged or reset
The device is replaceable; the correct backup is what restores access. If the wallet is lost, damaged or reset, obtain a compatible replacement and use the manufacturer’s documented recovery process. Confirm the supported backup standard before entering anything.
- Locate the original physical backup without photographing or transcribing it into a digital device.
- Check the replacement device’s official documentation for BIP39, SLIP39 or the relevant format.
- Initialize the replacement with its “recover,” “restore” or equivalent option, rather than creating a new wallet.
- Enter the words only where the compatible device itself instructs you to do so. Keep the phrase out of the computer or phone screen.
- Verify that the expected accounts and balances appear before making transactions. If the wallet opens an empty account, stop and check the standard, word order and recovery settings instead of repeatedly entering the phrase into different software.
Never send the words to customer support, even when the device is broken or a transaction is urgent. Legitimate support should not ask for a recovery phrase. If you have already typed the phrase into a website, app or computer, treat it as exposed: move funds to a newly generated wallet whose new phrase has been created and stored offline, following the wallet manufacturer’s secure procedure.
Scams and recovery requests to reject
Attackers commonly create urgency around a failed transaction, account suspension, airdrop or “security check.” The request may arrive by email, social media, messaging app, phone call or a fake support page. The format does not make it legitimate.

- Stop if a device behaves differently from its documented recovery flow or displays an unexpected request for the phrase.
A practical backup checklist
- The wallet generated the phrase during its own trusted setup.
- Every word is recorded in the displayed order and the word count matches the wallet’s format.
- The record was created offline, without a camera, screenshot, computer, phone or cloud service.
- The wallet’s built-in verification or recovery check was completed, if available.
- The backup is stored privately and protected against fire, water, theft and accidental disposal.
- Any second copy is in another secure physical location, and you know where every copy is.
- The phrase has never been entered into a website, message, ordinary software wallet or support ticket.
- You know whether the wallet uses BIP39, SLIP39 or another documented standard before needing recovery.
- You can identify the manufacturer’s official recovery instructions without relying on an unsolicited message.
The essential rule
Back up the phrase once, offline and accurately, then protect it like the funds themselves. A lost hardware wallet can usually be replaced when the correct compatible backup still exists; a leaked phrase cannot be made secret again.
