To create a redundant GlusterFS pool, prepare a dedicated brick filesystem on at least two servers, run glusterd on every node, join the servers into a trusted storage pool, and create a replicated volume whose replica bricks reside on different peers. Start the volume, mount it from a GlusterFS-capable client, and verify that test files appear on every expected brick.

What a redundant GlusterFS pool actually is
GlusterFS builds storage from bricks: export directories on servers that belong to a trusted storage pool. A trusted storage pool is the group of Gluster servers that recognize one another as peers and can host volumes. A volume is the logical collection of those bricks.
In a replicated volume, GlusterFS keeps each file on multiple bricks. A replica 2 volume keeps two copies; a replica 3 volume keeps three. If one server fails, another replica can continue serving the data, provided the volume and client remain otherwise healthy.

A distributed-replicated volume combines two behaviors: files are distributed across multiple replica sets to increase usable capacity, while each file is replicated inside its assigned set. Replication protects against a brick or host failure; distribution lets you add more replica sets as the dataset grows.
Replication is availability protection, not a backup history. It mirrors accidental deletions, corruption, ransomware-encrypted files, and configuration mistakes. Keep an independent backup system with its own retention and recovery process.
Choose the volume layout before installing anything
| Layout | When it fits | Capacity and design consequences |
|---|---|---|
Replicated (replica N) |
Reliability and high availability matter more than mirrored capacity. | Every file has N copies. With equal-size bricks, usable capacity is approximately the capacity of one replica set, not the sum of all bricks. |
| Distributed replicated | You need to scale capacity while retaining replica protection. | Brick count must be divisible by the replica count. Consecutive brick arguments form replica sets, so ordering determines which servers hold each copy. |
| Dispersed | You want erasure-code-style protection and better space efficiency than full mirroring. | It requires at least three bricks, and the redundancy level is fixed when the volume is created. Failure tolerance and recovery behavior differ from replication. |
For a first redundant deployment, replica 2 is the smallest practical mirror and needs at least two storage servers. Three servers make a straightforward replica-3 example and keep all copies on separate peers. Place replica members in different failure domains whenever possible: separate hosts first, and separate racks, power circuits, or availability zones if your environment supports them.
Plan nodes, failure domains, and capacity
Count servers and bricks
Use two servers for a two-way mirror or three servers for a three-way mirror. In a distributed-replicated design, multiply the replica count by the number of replica sets you need. For example, a six-brick replica 3 volume contains two replica sets. The total brick count must be a multiple of three.
Do not place two members of one replica set on the same server. A disk failure may be isolated to one brick, but a host failure removes every brick on that host. Keeping all members on different peers preserves host-level redundancy.
Estimate usable capacity
Mirroring consumes capacity. If three equal-size bricks form a replica-3 set, the raw space is roughly three times the usable dataset space before filesystem and GlusterFS overhead. A distributed-replicated volume adds capacity by adding complete replica-sized groups, not by adding an arbitrary single brick.

Permit Gluster management and data traffic through host and network firewalls. Exact ports depend on the GlusterFS release and distribution, so use the target distribution’s current firewall guidance rather than copying a port list from an unrelated release.
Prepare storage and install GlusterFS on every server
Use a dedicated filesystem for bricks
Keep brick data on a filesystem intended for storage rather than on the operating-system root filesystem. The documented quick-start pattern uses XFS on a separate disk and mounts it at /data/brick1. The device name below is an example; substitute the correct device for each server and verify it before formatting.
mkfs.xfs -i size=512 /dev/sdb1
mkdir -p /data/brick1
echo '/dev/sdb1 /data/brick1 xfs defaults 1 2' >> /etc/fstab
mount -a && mount
Warning: mkfs.xfs destroys existing data on the selected device. Confirm the device with your operating system’s disk tools before running it. If the filesystem already exists, mount it instead of formatting it.
Recommended Free Tools
Install the server package and start glusterd
Install the GlusterFS server package on every participating storage node, then start and inspect the management daemon:
yum install glusterfs-server
service glusterd start
service glusterd status
Those commands reflect a Fedora-era documented example. Package names, service commands, and repositories vary by distribution and release. Follow the current installation instructions for your operating system, then confirm that glusterd starts automatically after reboot.
Check prerequisites before creating the pool
- Each server has a mounted data filesystem at the intended brick parent path.
- The hostnames you will use resolve from every node.
glusterdis running on every node.- Firewalls allow the required Gluster communication.
- System clocks are synchronized.
- The storage filesystem is separate from the operating-system disk where practical.
Join the servers into a trusted storage pool
Choose one node as the administration point and probe the other servers from it. The probe creates peer relationships; it does not create a volume or copy application data.
gluster peer probe server2
gluster peer probe server3
For a two-server pool, probe only server2. For larger pools, probe each additional peer that will host bricks. If hostname identity is important in your environment, probe the first server back from another node as recommended in the quick-start procedure.

Inspect the result:
gluster peer status
Healthy output shows the expected peers and a connected state. If a peer is missing or disconnected, stop here and fix name resolution, daemon status, or firewall connectivity before creating a volume. A volume can only use bricks on servers that are members of the trusted pool.
Create dedicated brick directories
Create a subdirectory below the mounted brick filesystem on every server that will contribute a brick:
mkdir -p /data/brick1/gv0
Use a different subdirectory for each volume. Do not use the filesystem root, such as /data/brick1, directly as a brick path. A dedicated child directory keeps volume data separate from mount-point metadata and makes future administration safer.
Before continuing, verify that the path is on the intended mounted filesystem on each host. A missing mount can cause data to be written to the operating-system disk instead of the storage device.
Create a replicated volume
Replica 3 on three servers
For a three-way mirror, list one brick from each server and specify replica 3:
gluster volume create gv0 replica 3 server1:/data/brick1/gv0 server2:/data/brick1/gv0 server3:/data/brick1/gv0
This creates the volume definition but does not make it available to clients yet. Each file written through the mounted volume is intended to have a copy on all three listed replica bricks.
Replica 2 on two servers
For a two-way mirror, use two bricks on separate servers:

gluster volume create gv0 replica 2 server1:/data/brick1/gv0 server2:/data/brick1/gv0
Replica 2 uses less raw capacity than replica 3, but it has less redundancy. A two-server design can lose redundancy as soon as one server is unavailable, so plan how clients will behave during that degraded period.
Distributed replicated volume
For multiple replica sets, the number of brick paths must be divisible by the replica count, and the order of the arguments matters. With replica 3 and six bricks, put one brick from each server in the first three positions, then the second brick from each server:
gluster volume create gv0 replica 3 server1:/data/brick1/gv0 server2:/data/brick1/gv0 server3:/data/brick1/gv0 server1:/data/brick2/gv0 server2:/data/brick2/gv0 server3:/data/brick2/gv0
The first three consecutive bricks form one replica set; the next three form the second. If you accidentally place two bricks from the same host in one set, you reduce host-failure protection and may receive a warning or refusal. Review the proposed layout before confirming the command.
What happens if the brick count is wrong?
GlusterFS requires a distributed-replicated volume’s brick count to be a multiple of its replica count. For example, four bricks cannot form a replica 3 distributed-replicated volume. Add or remove bricks in complete replica-sized groups instead of trying to create an uneven set.
Start the volume and inspect its state
A newly created volume must be started before clients can mount it:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →gluster volume start gv0
gluster volume info gv0
gluster volume status gv0
In gluster volume info, confirm the volume name, volume type, replica count, transport, brick count, and brick paths. The status must report Started. gluster volume status checks the online volume processes and helps identify a brick that is not running.
If the volume will not start, inspect /var/log/glusterfs/glusterd.log on the relevant nodes. Correct the underlying peer, path, permission, or connectivity problem, then run the status commands again. Do not proceed to client mounts while the volume is stopped or a required brick is offline.

Mount the volume from a client
The client must have GlusterFS client support installed. Create a mount point and mount the volume by naming a reachable Gluster server and the volume name:
mkdir -p /mnt/gluster-test
mount -t glusterfs server1:/gv0 /mnt/gluster-test
The server in the mount command is a connection endpoint; clients can use another healthy peer if the environment and client configuration support it. Ensure the client can resolve that hostname and reach the Gluster service through its firewall.

Validate replication with a controlled write test
Validation should prove both client visibility and brick-level placement. Start with a small test directory rather than copying production data.
- Write a uniquely named file through the mounted path, for example
echo 'replication test' > /mnt/gluster-test/replica-check.txt. - Read the file back through the mount and confirm the expected contents.
- On each server, check the corresponding brick directory for the test file:
/data/brick1/gv0/replica-check.txt. - For a replica-2 or replica-3 volume, confirm that the file appears on each replica brick in the set. A distributed-replicated volume places the file in one replica set, so inspect the set that contains it rather than expecting every brick in the entire volume to contain every file.
- Remove the test file through the mounted volume when validation is complete.
The Gluster quick-start example validates a larger transfer by copying 100 files through the mount and checking the brick directories on each server. That count is an example test, not a performance benchmark or a required minimum.
Understand failure domains and degraded operation
Replication only protects failures that are independent of one another. Three copies on three separate hosts are more resilient to a host outage than three brick directories on one host. Likewise, placing all servers in one rack or on one power circuit leaves a shared failure domain outside Gluster’s control.
When designing production placement, document which server owns each brick, which replica set it belongs to, and which physical or logical failure domain it occupies. Keep that mapping with your recovery documentation so an expansion or replacement does not accidentally co-locate replicas.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Expand a distributed-replicated volume safely
Plan expansion in replica-sized groups. The managing-volumes guidance requires adding bricks in multiples of the replica count. A replica 3 volume therefore needs three new bricks for each additional replica set, with one brick on each intended peer whenever possible.
Before expansion, verify that the new servers are trusted peers, their filesystems are mounted, and their brick directories are empty dedicated paths. Preserve the same ordering discipline used at creation time. An incorrectly ordered expansion can put replica members in the wrong failure domains.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
gluster peer probe fails or the peer is disconnected |
Hostname resolution, stopped glusterd, or blocked firewall traffic. |
Resolve both hostnames, run gluster peer status, check service glusterd status, and review firewall rules on both nodes. |
| Volume creation rejects the brick layout | Replica members are on the same server, or the brick count is not divisible by the replica count. | Reorder brick arguments and add or remove complete replica-sized groups. |
| The volume exists but clients cannot mount it | The volume was not started, the client lacks GlusterFS support, or the endpoint is unreachable. | Run gluster volume info gv0, confirm Status: Started, check client installation, name resolution, and firewall access. |
| A brick path contains no expected files | The wrong filesystem is mounted, the path belongs to another volume, or the file is in a different replica set. | Confirm the mount with mount, verify the exact brick path, and map the file to its replica set in a distributed-replicated layout. |
| The volume will not start | A brick process, path, peer, or daemon problem. | Run gluster volume status gv0 and inspect /var/log/glusterfs/glusterd.log on affected nodes. |
