Open Steam’s Server Browser from the Steam tray menu, then check another Source game. If both tests fail, investigate Steam connectivity, firewall, router, ISP, hosts-file, or Valve master-server access. If Steam’s browser works but Garry’s Mod does not, repair Garry’s Mod locally: reset its firewall permission, verify its files, try -autoconfig, and temporarily disable addons.

This order avoids reinstalling unnecessarily and separates a missing single community server from a platform-wide outage. Follow the branches below in sequence; stop when the list returns.

Identify exactly what is missing
“Garry’s Mod is not showing any servers” can describe several different faults. The correct fix depends on the scope of the failure:
- Blank list or endless loading everywhere: the client may not be reaching the master server, or Steam’s network access may be blocked.
- Steam’s Server Browser is also empty: the problem is broader than Garry’s Mod. Firewall rules, router or ISP restrictions, a hosts-file entry, Steam availability, or a Valve master-server issue become more likely.
- Another Source game is also empty, but Steam’s browser is unclear: treat this as a Source-platform or network problem rather than an addon problem.
- Steam’s browser and another Source game work, but Garry’s Mod does not: focus on Garry’s Mod’s firewall entry, damaged local files, launch configuration, or addons.
- Only one community server is absent: do not assume your installation is broken. That server may be offline, misconfigured, no longer publishing, or affected by its operator’s authentication settings.
Record which of these symptoms you have before changing anything. That observation is the baseline for every later step.

Run the two scope tests first
Test Steam’s built-in Server Browser
- Exit any game.
- Open the Steam tray menu (the Steam icon in the notification area) and choose the Server Browser/Servers entry.
- Let the browser complete a refresh. A temporary empty result during startup is not conclusive; wait for the browser’s own loading cycle to finish.
If Steam’s browser cannot retrieve servers either, skip directly to the connectivity and firewall sections. If it lists servers normally, the Steam service is reachable and the remaining work should concentrate on Garry’s Mod.
Test another Source game
Launch another Source-engine game installed on the same computer and open its multiplayer server list. Facepunch’s troubleshooting flow uses this comparison because it shows whether the shared Source networking path works.
- Both Garry’s Mod and the other Source game fail: check firewall, router, ISP, hosts-file, Steam status, and master-server reachability.
- Only Garry’s Mod fails: continue with Garry’s Mod file, launch-option, addon, and per-application firewall repairs.
- Steam’s browser works while both games fail: treat the game executables’ permissions or local installations as the likely boundary.
Reset Steam and Source firewall permissions
Steam Support’s prescribed repair is to remove stale firewall entries and allow the current executables again. This matters after a Steam or game update: the firewall can retain a rule for an older executable path or silently block a newly replaced binary.

- Close Steam completely, including its tray icon. Confirm that Steam is no longer running before editing rules.
- Open your operating system’s firewall or allowed-app settings.
- Remove existing entries for
steaminstall.exe,steam.exe,hl.exe,hl2.exe, andsteamTmp.exe. Remove only the stale rules for these programs; do not turn off the firewall globally. - Start Steam again.
- When the firewall asks about access, allow the listed Steam and Source executables on both TCP and UDP networks as appropriate for your network profile.
- Restart the computer, then repeat the Steam Server Browser and Garry’s Mod tests.
Steam explicitly says, “We do not recommend leaving your firewall disabled.” Disabling protection can be a short diagnostic comparison only; restore it immediately and create precise application permissions instead. If the list works after the reset, leave the firewall enabled and keep the new rules so future updates can prompt for authorization rather than inheriting a broken entry.
Check service availability and network restrictions
Check Steam’s service status
Before changing local files, check Steam Server Status. A maintenance window or outage can make every server list appear empty even when your computer is configured correctly. Retry after the service reports normal operation. There is no reliable client-side repair for a master-server outage.
Inspect the router and ISP path
If Steam’s browser and another Source game both fail while Steam itself signs in normally, inspect network controls outside the game:

- Temporarily test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, if your data plan permits. A working list on the alternate connection points to the original router or ISP.
- Review router firewall, parental-control, DNS-filtering, and gaming restrictions. A managed network may block Steam or game-server traffic even while ordinary web pages load.
- Ask the ISP whether outbound Steam or game-server traffic is filtered. This is especially relevant on school, work, hotel, and carrier-grade networks.
- Check the hosts file for stale entries that redirect or block Steam or Valve domains. Remove only entries you can identify confidently, and keep a backup before editing.
Steam warns that required ports cannot be remapped to HTTP or to an arbitrary custom port range. Do not “solve” a blocked connection by translating Steam’s required traffic to web ports; correct the router or ISP restriction instead. If you do not control the router, the network administrator or ISP must make the change.
Repair Garry’s Mod when Steam works
When Steam’s own browser is healthy and another Source game can find servers, use these local repairs in order. Each is reversible and narrower than reinstalling Steam.
Verify the game files
- In Steam, open your Library.
- Right-click Garry’s Mod and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow Steam to download replacements, then restart Garry’s Mod and test the browser before changing another setting.
Verification repairs missing or corrupted files without deleting your entire Steam installation. It can also replace files altered by an update, so let the process finish even if the progress appears to pause.

Try the -autoconfig launch option
- Open Garry’s Mod’s Steam Properties.
- On the General page, find Launch Options.
- Enter
-autoconfig, launch the game, and test the server list. - After testing, remove the option unless you specifically need it. It is a configuration reset, not a permanent requirement.
This step is useful when a damaged or incompatible local video and engine configuration prevents normal startup or browser initialization. It does not repair a blocked router or a Valve outage, so use it only after the scope tests point to Garry’s Mod.

Addons can alter menus, networking hooks, or startup behavior. Temporarily disable all addons from Garry’s Mod’s Addons management screen, restart the game, and check the browser with a clean addon set. If the list returns, re-enable addons in small groups until the conflicting addon is identified. Keep the working and failing groupings noted; removing everything at once makes the cause harder to find. Restore addons only after confirming that the list remains functional.
Escalate to Steam configuration repair only after the local checks
If Steam’s browser is unavailable or Steam components appear damaged after the firewall and status checks, Steam’s recovery procedure is a later escalation, not the first response to a blank Garry’s Mod list.

- Exit Steam.
- Preserve
steam.exeand thesteamappsfolder exactly as Steam’s instructions specify. The latter contains installed game data; deleting it can force large redownloads. - Remove the other Steam files covered by Steam’s configuration-repair guidance, leaving the preserved items untouched.
- Relaunch Steam and allow it to rebuild the removed components.
- Test Steam’s Server Browser first, then Garry’s Mod.
Do not improvise by deleting the entire Steam directory. If you are unsure which items the official procedure means on your installation, stop and obtain the current Steam Support instructions before removing anything. This repair carries more disruption risk than resetting a firewall permission or verifying one game’s files.

A client that lists other servers normally is not experiencing a general browser failure. Check the server’s own status through its community channels, confirm that you are searching the correct game mode and map filters, and try a direct connection only if the operator has supplied a current address. Filters can hide a server without indicating a network fault, so clear restrictive map, region, password, and player-count filters before escalating.
The server operator must also maintain valid publication and authentication settings. The Garry’s Mod Wiki states: “Starting with the May 2020 update, all Garry’s Mod servers should have a GSLT (Steam Game Server Login Token).” GSLT is a server-side requirement for publication and authentication; obtaining or changing one will not repair a client whose entire browser is blank. If many players cannot see that one server, the operator should check its listing configuration, uptime, token status, and server logs.
