How to Change a PHP Setting on Your WordPress Hosting

Change WordPress PHP settings safely: edit the domain in cPanel MultiPHP INI Editor or Plesk PHP Settings, understand memory and upload directives, and troubleshoot limits that refuse to change.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to change a PHP setting for WordPress is in your hosting control panel. In cPanel, open Software → MultiPHP INI Editor, choose the site’s domain, change the directive, and click Apply. On Plesk, use the domain’s PHP Settings page. These per-domain tools change the PHP configuration that actually serves the site.

If your host does not expose either tool, use only an override the host allows—usually a domain-level php.ini, selected .htaccess directives, or WordPress constants in wp-config.php. A WordPress constant can request more memory, but it cannot override a server limit that PHP refuses to change.

Start by identifying the PHP configuration that is really serving the site

PHP settings are scoped to a particular PHP version, domain, and hosting stack. Editing the wrong file or the wrong version can leave the live site unchanged while making the change appear successful in a file manager.

  1. Confirm the active PHP version. Check the host panel’s PHP selector or the PHP information shown by the host. If the site recently moved between PHP versions, treat each version as a separate configuration scope unless the provider says otherwise.
  2. Confirm the exact domain and document root. A WordPress installation in an add-on domain, subdomain, or subdirectory may not use the same settings as the account’s primary domain.
  3. Record the current effective value. WordPress Site Health or a host-provided diagnostic can show the value PHP is using. Keep a note of it so you can verify the change and restore it if necessary.
  4. Back up before editing files. Save a copy of wp-config.php, any existing php.ini, and .htaccess file you plan to modify. A malformed directive or an unsupported .htaccess setting can produce a server error.

Make one related change at a time. If an upload fails, for example, changing five unrelated limits makes it difficult to know which setting solved the problem or caused a new one.

Change a setting in cPanel

Open the per-domain editor

  1. Sign in to cPanel.
  2. Open Software → MultiPHP INI Editor.
  3. Select the domain that contains the WordPress installation.
  4. Choose the editor mode offered by your provider. Basic Mode exposes common options; Editor Mode exposes more of the PHP configuration.

Change the directive tied to the symptom, then click Apply at the bottom of the page. The setting is written for the selected domain and PHP configuration when the provider has enabled per-domain editing.

Use a consistent set of limits

For upload-related problems, review upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, and memory_limit together. cPanel documents the required relationship as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • memory_limit must be at least as large as post_max_size.
  • post_max_size must be at least as large as upload_max_filesize.

Raising only the individual file limit while leaving the total POST limit lower will still reject the request. Increase max_execution_time only when a script genuinely times out; it does not increase the size of a file that PHP will accept.

When the editor is missing

The hosting provider can enable or disable MultiPHP INI Editor. If you cannot find it, do not assume that editing an arbitrary account-level file will affect the domain. Follow the provider’s documented method for that account, or ask support which per-domain override is permitted.

Change a setting in Plesk

  1. Sign in to Plesk and open Websites & Domains.
  2. Select the domain that hosts WordPress.
  3. Open PHP Settings.
  4. Locate the directive, enter the new value in the format Plesk accepts, and save the page.

Plesk may show limits as editable fields or as a text area, depending on the service plan and PHP handler. If a field is locked, the plan or server administrator has imposed a cap; only that administrator can raise it.

File-based methods when the panel offers no editor

Hosts differ in which overrides they allow. A domain-level php.ini, selected directives in .htaccess, or constants in wp-config.php may work, but shared hosting can disable any of these methods. Check the host’s instructions before adding a directive.

Domain-level php.ini

When the host supports a per-domain php.ini, place it where the provider specifies—commonly the site’s document root—and add only the directives you need:

memory_limit = 256M
upload_max_filesize = 64M
post_max_size = 64M
max_execution_time = 120
max_input_time = 120

The location and reload behavior are host-specific. Some PHP handlers read the file for each request; others require a PHP-FPM reload or a service restart that only the provider can perform. Do not infer that the file is active simply because it exists.

.htaccess directives

Some Apache configurations permit PHP values in .htaccess, while others reject them or run PHP through a handler that ignores them. A typical permitted form is:

php_value memory_limit 256M

php_value post_max_size 64M

Use this only when the host explicitly supports it. If the server returns a 500 error after saving, remove the new lines through the file manager or SFTP and contact support. Do not leave a failing directive in place while troubleshooting WordPress.

WordPress constants in wp-config.php

WordPress can request memory for its front end and administration area. Add the constants before the line that says WordPress will stop editing the file:

define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '512M' );

WP_MEMORY_LIMIT applies to front-end rendering requests. WordPress documents a default of 40 MB for a standard installation and 64 MB for Multisite. WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT applies to back-end requests; its documented default is 256 MB.

These constants are requests made by WordPress at runtime. If the server-level memory_limit is lower, or PHP is configured not to permit runtime increases, the requested value will not become the effective limit. They also do not change upload directives such as upload_max_filesize or post_max_size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know which directive controls the failure

Directive or constant What it controls Important qualification
memory_limit Maximum memory PHP may allocate for one request The server can refuse a higher runtime request from WordPress.
WP_MEMORY_LIMIT Memory WordPress requests for front-end rendering WordPress documents a default of 40 MB on standard installs and 64 MB on Multisite.
WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT Memory WordPress requests for administration requests WordPress documents a default of 256 MB.
upload_max_filesize Maximum size of one uploaded file The value alone does not determine the maximum HTTP request size.
post_max_size Maximum size of the complete HTTP POST request It must be at least as large as upload_max_filesize.
max_execution_time Maximum time a PHP script may execute Raise it for operations that time out, not as a remedy for a size-limit error.
max_input_time Time PHP allows for receiving input Large uploads can be affected by this separate limit.

cPanel’s documented upload procedure reports a default maximum upload size of 2 MB and allows the listed variables to be set as high as 2 GB in that procedure. Those figures describe cPanel’s procedure, not a guarantee that every hosting plan permits those values.

Fix the uploaded-file-size error without guessing

The message that an uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive identifies the individual-file limit, but a successful upload also has to pass the total POST and memory limits.

  1. Measure the file you are trying to upload and note its size.
  2. In the hosting panel, set upload_max_filesize above that size.
  3. Set post_max_size at least as high as the new upload limit, leaving room for the rest of the form request.
  4. Confirm that memory_limit is at least as high as post_max_size.
  5. If the request stalls while the file is being received, review max_input_time. If processing continues and then times out, review max_execution_time.
  6. Apply the changes, verify the effective values, and retry the upload.

If the host caps any value below what your file requires, the correct fix is to ask support whether the limit can be raised or to use a smaller upload or another import method. Do not keep adding WordPress constants: they cannot bypass a server cap.

Why changing wp-config.php did not increase the limit

You changed a WordPress request, not the PHP ceiling

WP_MEMORY_LIMIT and WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT tell WordPress how much memory to request. The PHP memory_limit is the ceiling enforced by the server. If that ceiling is lower, PHP wins.

The error is controlled by another directive

An upload-size error is governed by upload_max_filesize and post_max_size, not by either WordPress memory constant. A larger memory request cannot make PHP accept a file that exceeds those limits.

The constant is in the wrong place or is overridden

WordPress reads the constants from the active installation’s wp-config.php. A second installation, a staging document root, or a constant defined earlier in the file can make an edit appear ineffective. Keep one definition for each constant and verify the file belongs to the domain you tested.

The host blocks runtime changes

Hosts can disable runtime increases or enforce a server-level maximum. WordPress advises contacting the host when directives cannot be changed. Ask support which value is effective for the domain, which PHP version serves it, and which override mechanism is allowed.

Verify the effective value after every change

  1. Return to WordPress Site Health or the host-provided PHP diagnostic.
  2. Check the value for the exact directive you changed, not only a WordPress memory summary.
  3. Confirm the reported PHP version and domain match the one you edited.
  4. Repeat the failed operation: upload, import, update, or long-running task.
  5. If the operation still fails, record the effective values and the exact error before contacting support.

Do not publish a diagnostic page containing complete server details. Use the host’s private diagnostic tool where available, then remove any temporary test file.

Troubleshoot values that refuse to change

The panel saves, but WordPress shows the old value

  • Check that the selected domain is the site’s actual document root.
  • Check the active PHP version; changing versions can select a different configuration scope.
  • Look for a higher-priority server or plan cap.
  • Ask whether PHP-FPM or another handler requires a reload before new values take effect.

The site returns a 500 error after an override

Remove the newest .htaccess or unsupported PHP directive first. Restore the backed-up file if necessary, then ask the provider which syntax is permitted. A directive valid for one PHP handler can be invalid for another.

A previous custom setting disappeared

In cPanel, deleting the domain-level or home-directory php.ini resets settings to defaults. Recreate the file only through the provider’s documented method, then verify the effective values.

The host says the value cannot be raised

Shared hosting commonly applies server-level caps. Send support the domain, PHP version, current effective values, desired values, and the operation that fails. Ask whether the cap is fixed for the plan, whether support can apply a per-domain exception, and whether a different service level is required. If the provider cannot change it, use an import or upload method that fits the cap rather than forcing an unsupported override.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing hosting when PHP settings access matters

If you are selecting or moving hosting for a WordPress site that handles large media, imports, or memory-intensive administration, evaluate the control surface rather than relying on a headline PHP version.

  • Is a per-domain PHP editor exposed, such as cPanel MultiPHP INI Editor or Plesk PHP Settings?
  • Can you select the PHP version independently for each domain?
  • What maximum values does the plan allow for memory, uploads, POST size, and execution time?
  • Are domain-level php.ini or .htaccess overrides permitted?
  • Does the PHP handler require a PHP-FPM reload or server restart after a change?
  • How does support handle requests above a shared-host cap?

Request the answers for the exact plan and region you will use. A control panel may display a field while the underlying plan still prevents values above its server maximum.

Safe rollback checklist

  • Write down the original effective values before changing them.
  • Restore the previous value in the same control panel or file where you made the edit.
  • Remove duplicate constants from wp-config.php rather than stacking new definitions.
  • Delete a temporary domain-level php.ini only when you understand that cPanel may reset the domain or home-directory settings to defaults.
  • Recheck Site Health and repeat the operation that originally failed.

Keep limits only as high as the task requires. Larger limits can allow a single request to consume more server resources, especially on shared hosting, so increase them deliberately and review them after a one-time migration or import.
