To create a folder, first open the location where it should live, then use that app’s folder-creation control. The steps differ by platform: use Finder on a Mac, Files on iPhone, or the Google Drive app or website. The title does not identify a Windows version or app, so current Windows-specific steps cannot be confirmed here.
Create a folder in Mac Finder
- Open Finder and navigate to the location where you want the folder.
- Choose File > New Folder, or press Shift-Command-N.
- Type a name and press Return.
Apple says that if New Folder is dimmed, the current location does not allow you to create a folder. Apple’s Finder instructions cover this workflow.

Create a folder in Files on iPhone
- Open the Files app and navigate to the location—or existing folder—where the new folder should go.
- Tap More, then tap New Folder.
- Enter a name and finish creating the folder.
If New Folder is not shown, Apple says that location does not permit folder creation. See Apple’s iPhone Files instructions.

Create a folder in Google Drive
On a computer
- Go to drive.google.com and open the location where the folder belongs.
- Select New > Folder.
- Enter a name and click Create.
Google notes that there is no single correct way to organize files in Drive; choose a structure that suits how you find and use them. See Google Drive’s folder instructions.

On Android
- Open the Google Drive app and navigate to the destination.
- Tap Add > Folder.
- Enter a name and tap Create.
Google’s instructions are available at Google Drive Help for Android.
If you are using Windows
“Win” alone does not identify a Windows version or the app in which you want to create the folder. The available Windows reference is historical, so it is not a reliable basis for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 directions. In any platform, make sure you have opened the intended parent location before creating a folder; creation controls and permissions depend on that location.

Why the folder option may be unavailable
- The option is dimmed or missing: the selected location may not allow new folders. This is the behavior Apple documents for Finder and iPhone Files.
- You are in the wrong location: navigate to the parent folder or Drive location first, then try again.
- You need a Windows-specific answer: identify the Windows version and app, since the title does not specify either.
