How to Remove an HDD or SSD Password on a Toshiba Laptop

If you know the drive password, remove it in the laptop’s BIOS/UEFI Security settings or, on supported models, with Toshiba Hardware Setup or Security Assist. The exact menu depends on the model. If you have forgotten the drive password, do not assume a BIOS reset, Windows reinstall, or password utility will unlock the drive or recover its data.

First identify which password the laptop is asking for

A prompt that appears before Windows starts can be for a BIOS/UEFI password or a separate HDD/SSD user password. The two are not interchangeable: removing a BIOS user password does not necessarily remove the registered drive password. Dynabook explicitly distinguishes them in its Windows 10 Password Utility instructions.

Before following a menu path, note the exact wording of the prompt and the laptop’s full model number. Without those details, it is not possible to give reliable, model-specific keystrokes or menu names.

Remove the drive password when you know it

Dynabook documents removing a known HDD password through the firmware settings. Some Toshiba laptops also include a Windows utility for password management; whether Hardware Setup or Security Assist is available depends on the computer. The documented options are described in Dynabook’s UEFI, BIOS, and HDD password guidance and its Toshiba Password Utility FAQ.

Use BIOS/UEFI settings

  1. Restart the laptop and enter BIOS/UEFI using the method for your specific model. The cited guidance does not establish one universal key or startup procedure for all Toshiba laptops.
  2. Open the Security section and look for the HDD or storage-drive password setting.
  3. Choose the option to change, delete, or remove the drive password, then enter the current password when prompted. Labels and available choices vary by model.
  4. Save the change and restart. If the laptop still asks for a password, check whether the prompt is for BIOS/UEFI rather than the drive, or whether a separate password remains registered.

Use a supported Toshiba utility if present

On computers that include Hardware Setup or Security Assist, the password settings may also be managed in that utility. Open the installed utility and look for its HDD password controls; do not assume it is available on every model. Toshiba Password Utility documentation describes setting, changing, and deleting passwords, including an HDD password, but its presence and interface are model-dependent.

If you have forgotten the drive password

There is no universal recovery method established for a forgotten laptop HDD/SSD password. Toshiba’s Canvio Slim II security manual warns that if its password is forgotten, “the drive cannot be unlocked and you can no longer access the data.” That warning applies to the Canvio Slim II external-drive software; it is not proof of a universal policy for every Toshiba laptop drive. It does show why you should not count on recovering data without the correct password.

The same Canvio manual mentions a secure erase function for that product. It is not a general laptop-drive unlocking procedure, and erasing is not data recovery. Do not use an erase option unless you understand that it may destroy data and that the instructions apply to your exact drive.

  • A BIOS reset or removal of the BIOS password does not necessarily remove a separate HDD/SSD password.
  • Reinstalling Windows does not establish that a locked drive can be unlocked or its contents recovered.
  • Do not enter commands or use third-party password tools that claim to bypass the drive password unless the manufacturer confirms they apply to your exact model and drive.

If the forgotten password is for BIOS/UEFI

Dynabook’s legacy support bulletin says, “If you forget the BIOS password, only a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider can remove it.” This statement concerns BIOS password removal, not recovery of data from a drive with a forgotten HDD/SSD password. Contact Dynabook support with the exact laptop model and ask what service is available in your region for the specific password prompt you see. The bulletin does not promise that service can recover drive data or remove every drive password.

When a replacement drive is an option

If your goal is to use the laptop rather than retrieve data from the locked drive, replacement storage may be an option. First confirm the laptop’s exact model and the compatible drive type with its manufacturer documentation or support. Replacing the drive does not unlock the old one or restore its data; consider it only if you accept losing access to what is on the locked drive.

What to have ready before asking for help

  • The full Toshiba laptop model number.
  • The exact text of the password prompt and when it appears.
  • Whether you know the password and whether the password is requested before or after the operating system starts.
  • Whether your priority is removing a known password, recovering access to data, or making the laptop usable with replacement storage.
