The simplest reported route is the Spatial Capture feature in the Insta360 app; Splatica is a paid cloud alternative that TechRadar reported can export a PLY file. Their capabilities and limits differ, so choose based on whether you need an easy shareable scene or a downloadable model.
What a Gaussian splat is—and what the camera does
A Gaussian splat is a 3D scene represented by many small, semi-transparent ellipsoids. Each has attributes such as position, orientation, scale, opacity, and color. Software estimates where the camera was for each image, then optimizes the scene so it can render views from positions the camera did not occupy. Polycam’s technical explanation describes the representation; Splat Labs also explains Gaussian splatting as a real-time rendering technique.

An Insta360 records the source imagery. A separate service or software reconstructs the scene. The result and required preparation depend on the tool: footage cannot be assumed to upload unchanged to every Gaussian-splat workflow. For example, Polycam’s Reconstruction API requires a Polycam-format frames.json file with image poses and camera intrinsics for splat mode; it says this is not COLMAP or NeRF transforms.json.

The Spatial Capture and Splatica descriptions are from separate TechRadar reports, not an independent head-to-head test. TechRadar characterized Spatial Capture as casual-oriented and Splatica as more suited to professional or enterprise users. For a desktop route, Splat Labs names Postshot and Luma AI as examples of software used to train splats from footage. Exact compatibility and preparation vary by tool.

Create a scene with Insta360 Spatial Capture
The steps and limits below reflect TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 report, which said its compatibility and capture guidance came from an Insta360 user guide shared with the reporter. Spatial Capture was reported as a beta feature, so confirm the current app, firmware, and guidance before recording.
- Check compatibility. TechRadar reported support for Insta360 X-series cameras capable of at least 5.7K at 30fps, including X4 Air and X5, and said X6 support required the latest camera firmware and app. This was reported guide information, not a directly reviewed public Insta360 support page.
- Record a suitable clip. The report said Insta360 recommended 8K at 30fps in PureVideo or standard video mode. I-Log and filtered clips were reported as unsupported.
- Choose the scene carefully. The reported guidance favored bright indoor scenes, few people, and an area no larger than 100 square meters (about 1,076 square feet). Moving people or poor lighting may make reconstruction less suitable; the report does not establish a guaranteed result for any specific scene.
- Keep the clip within the reported limit. TechRadar reported a maximum of two minutes per clip at publication. Beta limits can change, so check the current app before capturing.
- Submit it in the app. Connect the camera to the Insta360 app, open the Spatial Capture tab, tap Create My Space, and select the clip. Processing was reported to happen in the cloud.
- Review and share. Open the resulting scene in the app or share its link. TechRadar reported four free generations per month and no scene-file export at publication; confirm current allowances and export options in the app.
Use Splatica for a downloadable PLY
TechRadar’s May 4, 2026 feature reported that Splatica supported Insta360 X2, X3, X4, X5, and One RS footage. Its capture advice was to record one continuous clip, move slowly and evenly, and cover the subject from different heights to reduce blind spots.

Capture with steady, overlapping coverage
In the reporter’s indoor example, an X5 on a selfie stick recorded a three-minute 8K/30fps clip: three circuits of the room at chest, hip, and overhead height, a diagonal pass, and a final circuit in the opposite direction. The reporter uploaded it to Splatica, waited several hours for processing, opened the scene in a browser, and downloaded a PLY file. This is one reported example, not a guaranteed recipe. The selfie stick was used in that example but was not identified as a requirement.
Upload and check current terms
After recording, upload the clip through Splatica and follow its current processing and export steps. The May 2026 report described the service as paid and listed monthly Basic, Pro, and Studio tiers at $49.95, $149.95, and $299.95, respectively. It said Basic included 300 points, roughly enough for one five-minute video, and also described temporary introductory pricing and paid extra points. These are historical terms reported on May 4, 2026, not verified current prices or allowances; check Splatica before subscribing.

Capture and export considerations
- Prioritize complete coverage. For Splatica, the reported advice is slow, even movement and multiple passes at different heights. A selfie stick can help keep the camera away from the operator, but it is not established as essential.
- Match the workflow to the deliverable. Spatial Capture was reported to provide link-based viewing without a scene-file export at publication. Splatica was reported to provide a downloadable PLY. Confirm the current export formats if you need to edit or use the scene elsewhere.
- Do not assume every tool accepts raw camera files. Some reconstruction software needs extracted images and camera-pose or calibration data. Polycam’s API, for instance, specifies its own
frames.jsonformat rather than COLMAP or NeRFtransforms.json. - Expect tool-specific workflows. A 2024 ISPRS Archives paper describes a Postshot and Metashape workflow using image-orientation parameters, but it is not an Insta360-specific, validated recipe.
Insta360’s X Series file-format documentation describes camera source media; it does not document the Spatial Capture feature. For beta-specific requirements, rely on the current app and Insta360 guidance rather than assuming the camera’s file-format documentation covers reconstruction.
