Use a Live Activity when someone needs to follow one ongoing event or task as its status changes. Neither is a guarantee of instant updates: WidgetKit schedules refreshes opportunistically, while ActivityKit push updates are subject to system budgets and possible throttling.
Widget or Live Activity: what is the practical difference?
Both can be built with SwiftUI, but they serve different jobs. A widget presents information or functionality a person may want to check repeatedly. A Live Activity keeps one active event or task visible while it is in progress.

Standard widgets use timelines: the app provides dated entries, and WidgetKit decides when to display them. Apple’s WidgetKit documentation describes Live Activities differently: “Live Activities don’t use timelines to update their content. Instead, they use ActivityKit and ActivityKit push notifications you send with APNs.” ActivityKit manages a Live Activity’s lifecycle and updates.

Choose based on the information’s job
Use a widget for recurring, reusable information
A weather snapshot, calendar glance, or recurring account summary is usually a widget-shaped problem: the person may want the information outside the app, even when there is no single active event to track. Widgets also make sense when users should choose where to place the experience and which supported family to use.

Use a Live Activity for one active event
A delivery in progress, active workout, match, or trip status can suit a Live Activity when its changing state is useful to keep visible for the duration of that event. It is not a general-purpose continuously refreshing widget; ActivityKit represents a particular ongoing activity, which the app starts, updates, and ends.
Use both when the app has both needs
This is not necessarily an app-wide either-or decision. An app might use a widget for a persistent overview and a Live Activity for the one event currently underway. Apple describes creating the Live Activity interface with a widget extension, WidgetKit, and SwiftUI, while ActivityKit handles its configuration and lifecycle. See Apple’s ActivityKit documentation.

What “real-time” means for each option
WidgetKit: timelines first, remote refresh as a supplement
A timeline lets the app provide entries with dates for WidgetKit to display. WidgetKit controls refresh timing to manage energy use, so a timeline does not mean the system will redraw at every requested moment. WidgetKit also supports remote push notifications that ask for a widget refresh, but Apple characterizes delivery as opportunistic and budgeted. Treat this as a way to nudge a refresh when server data changes, not as a real-time delivery guarantee or a replacement for a timeline. Apple explains the mechanism in its guide to updating widgets with WidgetKit push notifications.
Live Activities: event updates through ActivityKit
An app can update a Live Activity directly, and a server can send updates using ActivityKit push notifications through APNs. That makes Live Activities a better fit when the changing state belongs to one active event, but it still does not guarantee immediate delivery. Apple says ActivityKit push notifications have a per-hour system budget and may be throttled when that budget is exceeded. Priority 5 can avoid counting toward the budget, while priority 10 uses it; these priorities are not a basis for promising an unrestricted update rate.

Apple also supports requesting permission for frequent ActivityKit updates, and people can turn those updates off. A server therefore needs to account for both system behavior and the person’s setting. Apple’s ActivityKit push notification guide describes the update path and its constraints. It does not establish a stable numeric message limit, so avoid designing around a guessed frequency.
Backend and implementation implications
If the server must update a Live Activity
Plan for more than sending a payload. The server-side path involves obtaining and handling push tokens, keeping token state current, constructing APNs requests, and choosing an update frequency that reflects meaningful state changes. Apple also documents broadcast channels for ActivityKit updates. Frequent high-volume changes—for example, a match score changing many times per minute—can exceed what the system allows, so the event model should not assume every intermediate change will appear immediately.

If the server must refresh a widget
WidgetKit push is an additional refresh mechanism, not a command to display new content at a guaranteed time. Keep the timeline useful on its own and treat remote refresh as a request that the system schedules. For either approach, build the experience so a delayed update does not mislead the person about the event’s state.

WidgetKit supports different families and placements across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. Live Activities have a narrower platform story: they are available on iPhone and iPad and can surface on a paired Mac or Apple Watch and in CarPlay. Apple explicitly says visionOS does not support Live Activities, and requests from compatible iPhone or iPad apps fail there.

Confirm the current platform matrix against the app’s minimum operating-system versions and target devices before promising the same experience everywhere. Apple’s WidgetKit strategy guide covers widget contexts; the ActivityKit documentation covers Live Activity support.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Is this a general glance or one active event? Choose a widget for recurring information and a Live Activity for an event or task being followed while it is underway.
- Does it need an exact refresh interval? Neither system promises one. Design for scheduled or delayed updates rather than instant delivery.
- Must a server initiate changes? Account for WidgetKit’s opportunistic refresh behavior or, for Live Activities, APNs integration and token management.
- Does the experience need to reach visionOS? WidgetKit widgets are supported there; Live Activities are not.
- Could both solve distinct user needs? Use a widget for the persistent overview and a Live Activity for the active item rather than forcing one interface to do both jobs.
