Google Search Console (GSC) measures how a site performs in Google Search; AI visibility tracking tools measure whether a brand or site appears in answers to a selected set of prompts on the AI platforms they monitor. GSC also reports impressions in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode when its dedicated report is available. These are different measurement scopes: a Google-defined impression is not the same as a vendor-defined visibility score, citation rate, or share of voice.
What does Google Search Console measure?
GSC’s standard Search Performance report describes how people encounter and click a site in Google Search. Its core metrics are clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. Google defines CTR as clicks divided by impressions; clicks count visits from Google Search, while impressions follow Google’s rules for when a result is considered seen.

The report can break results down by query, page, country, device, search appearance, and date. A query row helps show which searches led to impressions or clicks, but it does not turn GSC into a tracker for how a site appears in every search engine or AI assistant. Average position is an aggregate, not a fixed rank
Average position represents the average of the topmost position occupied by a site or page across its impressions. It is not a permanent rank for one keyword or a promise that every user sees the same placement. Search results can contain compound elements whose links share a position, and location, search history, and result layout can affect what appears. Google advises interpreting position carefully and considering trends in clicks and impressions. Google’s definitions of impressions, position, and clicks

Does Search Console track AI Overviews?
Yes. Google documents a dedicated Generative AI performance report for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode on Google Search. Its documented groupings include pages, countries, dates, and devices, and it can be filtered by search type. This is still Google Search reporting; it does not measure whether ChatGPT or other non-Google assistants mention or cite a site. Google Search Console Help: Generative AI performance report
Access is not guaranteed for every property: Google says availability is rolling out and may depend on a site receiving enough impressions. At property level, multiple links from the same site in a generative AI result can be aggregated as one impression in the chart, while the table may group data differently. Search Labs experiments are excluded. Consult Google’s report documentation for the current availability and reporting details.
What do AI visibility tracking tools measure?
Dedicated AI visibility tools generally run a chosen prompt set against the AI platforms included in the product, then summarize whether a brand or domain appears in the responses. Depending on the tool, reported measures may include mentions, cited pages or sources, citation position, sentiment, narrative themes, and share of voice against competitors. These are observations and calculations defined by the vendor for its product—not a universal standard or Google’s internal data.

How is AI visibility different from Google rankings?
A visibility or share-of-voice result usually answers a bounded question: within this tool’s platform coverage, prompt set, market, and date range, how often did the brand appear, and how did that compare with competitors? A citation position describes where a citation appeared in a response according to the tool’s definition. Neither is a single, universal ranking across AI products, nor evidence of traffic or business impact by itself.
Which tool should you use?
| Your question | Best-fit measurement | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| How is my site performing in Google Search? | Google Search Console | Google Search clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position, with supported report dimensions. |
| Does my site receive impressions in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode? | GSC Generative AI performance report, if available for the property | Google-reported impressions for those Google Search features, with documented groupings and reporting limits. |
| Does my brand or site appear in answers to selected questions across AI platforms? | A dedicated AI visibility tracker | Tool-defined mentions, citations, sentiment, or competitor comparisons for its monitored platforms and prompt sample. |
Google states that “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” Treat third-party trackers as monitoring instruments for the responses they observe, not privileged access to model internals. How to compare AI visibility over time
A trend is useful only if you understand what was measured. Semrush advises keeping the prompt set fixed for period-to-period reporting and pairing citation frequency with competitor share, and mention counts with sentiment. That is vendor guidance rather than a universal measurement standard. Semrush: How to measure AI search visibility
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Keep the tracked prompts and monitored platform scope consistent between periods; disclose changes when they occur.
- Record the market or geography and date range, along with the vendor and its definitions of a mention, citation, position, and visibility score.
- Review citation frequency alongside the cited URLs and answer context; a mention alone does not show whether the source is accurate or useful.
- Read mentions alongside sentiment and competitor share where the tool supports them, rather than relying on one headline score.
- Compare vendors on platform coverage, prompt selection and localization, measurement frequency, citation definitions and context, competitor coverage, sentiment methodology, export and historical data, and metric transparency.
- Use GSC and web analytics where appropriate to check Google Search performance and site outcomes. Do not interpret a tool-defined visibility percentage as a count of visits.
These measures can complement one another, but they do not become directly comparable simply because both are displayed as counts or percentages. No independent head-to-head vendor test establishes that one AI tracker is more accurate than another.
