How to Create a Call-In Show for a Live Stream

Choose an in-platform request-and-admit workflow or route a separate VoIP call into your streaming studio. Here’s how to set up each path and test it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two practical ways to bring callers into a live show: let viewers request to join a hosted studio and screen them before admitting them, or take a separate VoIP call and route its audio into your streaming studio with a mixer. Choose based on where your audience will watch and how much audio routing you want to manage. A key limitation: Riverside’s built-in call-in workflow is for people watching its own live recording or webinar—not viewers watching an external YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook stream.

Choose how callers will join

First decide whether callers should enter the studio as audience members or speak through a separate calling app. These are different workflows: one is an in-platform request-and-approval process; the other depends on audio routing between a VoIP app and your streaming studio.

Decision Hosted in-platform call-in VoIP plus mixer routing
How the caller joins They request to enter from the platform’s audience experience. They call through a separate VoIP service, whose audio is routed into the studio.
Host control Riverside documents reviewing requests, accepting or declining, and removing admitted callers. Depends on the calling app and routing setup; StreamYard’s guide describes routing, not a universal screening queue.
Audience destination Riverside’s built-in request feature is for people watching the Riverside experience, not an external stream. A separate app may suit callers who prefer it, but the cited StreamYard guide does not establish that a public phone number or caller access costs are included.
Setup components Fewer audio-routing components if the audience is already watching in Riverside. A VoIP service plus a physical or virtual mixer.
Compatibility Riverside documents call-in requests on desktop Chrome or Edge. Depends on the calling app, operating system, and audio-routing configuration.

This comparison reflects the platforms’ documented workflows, not a hands-on test.

Set up a hosted audience call-in

1. Send viewers to the right audience experience

For Riverside’s built-in call-in, direct viewers to the Riverside live recording or webinar audience experience. Viewers watching only on YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook cannot use that workflow to request entry. Riverside says its public audience link can allow non-registered viewers to watch, chat, and request to join; its help page states capacity of up to 100 such live viewers. Treat that as a platform-stated capacity for that audience-link experience, not a guarantee for every plan or configuration.

2. Set expectations and screen requests

Tell viewers how to request a turn, whether you will accept audio-only callers, and who is reviewing requests. In Riverside, a host or producer can review a requester’s name and message, then accept or decline. More than one person may request and more than one caller may be admitted, so establish a queue and turn-taking rule before the show to keep the conversation manageable.

3. Admit, manage, and remove callers

Once admitted, callers are seen and heard by the studio and live audience, and they are recorded. Callers can control their camera and microphone and leave; the host or producer can remove them. Make the recording aspect clear to callers before admitting them. The cited platform material does not establish jurisdiction-specific recording-consent requirements.

Route a separate VoIP call into the studio

1. Choose the calling and routing tools

StreamYard’s call-in guide describes using a VoIP service such as Skype or WhatsApp and a virtual or physical audio mixer to capture the call and route it into the studio. Its examples include Loopback on Mac and Voicemeeter on Windows. Those are examples in StreamYard’s guide, not universal operating-system requirements; compatibility depends on your specific app and setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Configure the audio path

  1. Open the calling app and mixer. Configure the VoIP app’s output and the mixer’s routing according to the selected software and operating system.
  2. Select the studio audio devices. In the streaming studio, choose the input that receives the caller audio from the mixer, and confirm the host microphone is also available to the show.
  3. Use headphones or earbuds. StreamYard recommends them for guests to help prevent echo. Monitor both the caller and the program audio so sound from speakers is not fed back into the call.
  4. Rehearse the complete route privately. With a second device or person, check what the caller hears, what the host hears, what reaches the stream, whether muting behaves as intended, and whether levels are usable.

There is no universal latency, audio-quality, or bandwidth target established by the cited instructions. Test the full signal path with your own services and equipment rather than assuming the routing behaves identically across systems.

Give non-callers a way to participate

Live chat is a useful alternative for viewers who do not want to go on air or cannot join the caller workflow. Riverside documents chat aggregation for supported live-stream destinations, with options to reply to or highlight audience messages. Riverside also says disabling live-stream chat disables audience Q&A, so check the interaction you need before turning chat off.

Check YouTube eligibility before scheduling

YouTube’s live-streaming help page says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. It also states that the minimum age to live stream is 16. Platform rules can change, so re-check YouTube’s current help information before launch. If your stream includes music, clips, or other material you do not own, check the relevant rights and platform rules; the cited eligibility guidance does not grant permission to use copyrighted material.

Troubleshoot common call-in problems

  • A viewer cannot request to join through Riverside. Confirm they are watching the Riverside audience experience rather than only an external YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook stream. For call-in requests, have them use desktop Chrome or Edge.
  • The caller is admitted but cannot be heard in the show. Recheck the VoIP app’s output, mixer routing, and the studio’s selected input. Test each point in the route with a private rehearsal.
  • The caller hears an echo. Ask the caller and host to use headphones or earbuds, then check that speaker output is not feeding back into the call microphone.
  • The caller can be heard by the host but not the audience. Verify that the caller audio is routed to the streaming studio’s program input, rather than only to the host’s monitoring device.
  • Requests disrupt the conversation. Have a host or producer screen requests, set a queue, and admit callers in turn. The host or producer can remove an admitted caller if needed.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos; it is not a way to take live callers or broadcast a camera-based call-in show. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
