What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If a WhatsApp message shows only the URL, first check the sender’s Disable link previews privacy setting. If it is off and you manage the website, check the exact page’s returned HTML for Open Graph tags and confirm the page and preview image are publicly reachable. The sources available do not establish an India-specific rule; the cause in an individual case depends on the sender, URL, page response, and client.
Check the sender’s WhatsApp privacy setting first
WhatsApp’s Help Center says that enabling Disable link previews stops previews for links that person sends. The setting is off by default and does not affect previews on links they receive. WhatsApp describes it as a way to protect the sender’s IP address during preview generation, so it is an optional privacy choice—not necessarily a fault with the website. See WhatsApp’s instructions for disabling link previews.

Ask the person who sent the link to check WhatsApp Settings or profile picture → Privacy → Advanced → Disable link previews. Turn it off if they want previews for links they send. Labels and navigation can vary by client version. If the sender prefers to keep the privacy setting enabled, the site owner cannot fix that sender-side choice for them.
Check the exact link and what it opens
Copy the complete URL from the message and test that same URL, including its scheme, path, and any redirects. Confirm it opens on the affected recipient’s device. If the destination itself fails to load, diagnose that separately: a preview card and a working destination are different things.

When checking a link you do not recognize, inspect the hostname and unusual characters before opening it. A missing preview does not prove a link is safe, and a preview is not a safety guarantee. WhatsApp’s guidance on suspicious links warns that a link can disguise its destination with unusual characters.
If you own the website, inspect the HTML returned for that page
Preview metadata needs to be present in the HTML available for the exact shared page. Inspect the server’s returned HTML—not only the browser’s page after scripts have run—and look in the document’s <head> for non-empty Open Graph values:

og:title— the page title to show in the card.og:description— a concise page description.og:url— the canonical URL for that page.og:image— an absolute, publicly reachable image URL, preferably using HTTPS.
Make sure these values describe the URL being shared, not just the site homepage. The page and image should be accessible without a sign-in, private CRM session, or other access requirement. The Meta WhatsApp link-preview documentation reproduced by ChatArchitect lists these Open Graph fields and notes that WhatsApp attempts a preview “when possible.” That is an attempt, not a guarantee that every message will show a card.

If the tags are present but the preview is still absent, secondary troubleshooting guides suggest checking whether metadata is injected only by client-side JavaScript, whether the site or image has HTTPS or certificate problems, and whether crawler access is restricted. These are useful diagnostic leads, not confirmed requirements or guaranteed causes for every WhatsApp client. See the guidance from OpenGraph+ and slsh.me.

Change one thing at a time, then retest
- Record the exact URL, WhatsApp client, sender’s preview setting, and whether the destination opens.
- If the sender setting is off and you own the site, inspect the returned HTML and confirm the four Open Graph values and image URL.
- Correct any missing or inaccurate values, inaccessible page or image, or fetch issue you find.
- Send the same URL again and note whether there is no card, a card without an image, or an old card.
A third-party guide reports that old preview data may persist for a URL and suggests trying a changed URL after updating metadata. Treat that only as a diagnostic experiment: it does not establish a guaranteed WhatsApp cache-refresh method. Do not assume that adding a query string will always clear an old result. A successful test on one phone or in one message also does not prove every client, device, or sending integration will show the same preview.
Does this happen because you are in India?
The sources available do not document a separate India-only WhatsApp link-preview rule. WhatsApp’s support guidance describes the sender privacy control generally, and the Meta documentation reproduced by ChatArchitect describes general page metadata and preview behavior. Check the sender setting, exact destination, and returned page before attributing the issue to location. This does not rule out every possible carrier, network, device, or app-version issue in India; those conditions are not established by the cited material.

If you also need a visual capture of the page while troubleshooting, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot can help you inspect what a page visibly renders, but it does not replace checking the raw HTML and Open Graph metadata described above. For example, request an image with one GET call:

Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
