To keep recorded lessons playing in order, add the files to OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. That makes playback restart after the last lesson; it does not back up the broadcast itself. If the computer, OBS, or internet connection fails, the stream can still stop. This guide covers both kinds of “backup,” plus YouTube eligibility, rights, and recording precautions.
Choose what you mean by “backup playlist”
The phrase can mean either a lesson playlist that moves through videos and repeats, or a separate fallback for a broadcast that goes down. An OBS playlist handles the first job. It does not provide a second encoder, computer, internet connection, or YouTube destination.

- Continuous lesson playback: arrange multiple files in OBS and enable Loop Playlist.
- Broadcast failover: prepare an independent encoder or playout system and test how the stream switches over. Do not assume a playlist guarantees zero downtime.
- File preservation: keep separate copies of important lesson files. A playlist is not a backup of those files.
Build and test a looping playlist in OBS
1. Prepare the lesson files
Make sure the video files are available locally on the computer that will run OBS. Arrange them in the intended teaching order, and keep a separate copy of important source files. Decide whether you want the list to repeat after the final lesson or stop there.

- Install VLC on the streaming computer. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to use 64-bit VLC too.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene you will stream.
- Populate the source’s playlist with the lesson files, then check their order.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed curriculum sequence.
- Turn on Loop Playlist to restart playback after the last file. OBS describes the control as: “Specifies whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files.”
OBS documents the VLC source for playing multiple media items. Its documentation does not establish direct playback of a YouTube-hosted playlist URL as an OBS media playlist. For one repeated lesson rather than several, use OBS’s Media Source for an individual file and enable its Loop setting. OBS Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022).

3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, check that the channel is eligible to livestream and set up the stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check the current status and settings in Studio before scheduling.
- Use the YouTube server URL and private stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before going live. YouTube recommends setting up encoder streams ahead of time, checking the preview, verifying viewer access, and monitoring audio and video.

4. Run a complete playback test
- Watch a transition between two lessons; confirm the next file starts and the order is correct.
- Listen for missing, unexpectedly loud, or overlapping audio.
- Check framing and aspect ratio for each file. Mixed video formats may not fill the player in the same way.
- Let the last file finish and confirm the playlist restarts if Loop Playlist is enabled.
- If you are making a local recording, verify that the recording is being written and that the saved file plays correctly.
What the playlist cannot back up
A playlist controls which lesson file plays next. It cannot keep broadcasting if the host computer loses power, OBS stops, the local network fails, the stream key becomes invalid, or YouTube has an outage. A true failover setup needs an independent encoder or playout system and a tested switchover. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network and checking that the player rolls to the backup encoder; that procedure does not promise interruption-free recovery. If you depend on a local OBS setup, identify what will happen in each failure case before relying on it for a continuous channel. A spare copy of the lesson files helps with file loss, but it does not replace a second encoder or network connection.

Clear rights to everything in the stream
Make sure you have the rights to stream every lesson and every included element, including images and music. Owning a video file does not by itself establish permission to livestream its contents. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say creators warrant that they have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including relevant music licensing rights.

Do not treat a 24/7 YouTube event as a complete archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour mark is an operational threshold from YouTube Help, not a guarantee of an archive for shorter streams. For preservation, record a local archive and check that it is valid, or publish individual lesson files separately as appropriate. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Local OBS or cloud playlist playout?
The right arrangement depends on which parts you want to operate yourself. A local playlist gives you direct access to OBS and the files; cloud playout shifts playback to a provider’s infrastructure. For any service, check its current storage, stream-hour, simultaneous-stream, destination, playlist-control, support, and recovery terms before relying on it.
