How to Store Scheduled Website Screenshots in Amazon S3

Schedule Lambda captures with EventBridge Scheduler, save timestamped screenshots to a private S3 bucket, and manage permissions, monitoring, retries, and retention.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Amazon EventBridge Scheduler to invoke an AWS Lambda function on a recurring cron or rate schedule. Have the function render a page, upload the image bytes to a private S3 bucket, and log whether both capture and upload succeeded. Use timestamped object keys for history, narrowly scoped IAM roles, and S3 Lifecycle rules for retention.

The browser-rendering step is a separate implementation choice: the AWS documentation cited here does not establish which browser package will work with a particular Lambda runtime, deployment package, memory allocation, or timeout. Verify those constraints before choosing a browser stack. If you want to avoid deploying a browser, a screenshot API can return the image bytes for Lambda to store; an example appears below.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

How the scheduled screenshot-to-S3 flow works

EventBridge Scheduler supports recurring cron and rate schedules and can invoke Lambda asynchronously. AWS recommends Scheduler for scheduled targets; its execution role authorizes invocation of the target. The Lambda function then does the page rendering and S3 upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a private S3 bucket for the screenshots, preferably in the same AWS Region as the function unless you have a reason to separate them.
  2. Create a Lambda function that accepts a site identifier and target URL (or a configuration key), renders the page, and writes the resulting bytes to S3.
  3. Create a recurring EventBridge Scheduler schedule using a cron or rate expression. Set its target to the Lambda function and pass the required event payload.
  4. Configure permissions, retries, monitoring, and retention before relying on the schedule operationally.

Choose one schedule per capture cadence, or group sites with compatible cadence and execution needs under one schedule. Keep secrets and sensitive configuration out of event payloads and object names; pass a site identifier or configuration key and retrieve sensitive values through an appropriately protected configuration mechanism.

Choose what each capture records

Decide whether the screenshot should represent a fixed viewport or the full page. A fixed viewport is useful when comparing a consistent visible area over time; a full-page capture records content farther down the page, but the page may change while it is being rendered. Also decide how the page should be handled when it is slow, requires interaction, or displays consent prompts. These choices affect fidelity and runtime requirements.

For browser-based rendering, select and package a browser automation runtime only after checking that its browser binaries and dependencies fit the Lambda runtime and deployment constraints you intend to use. Set a function timeout and memory allocation appropriate to the page-rendering workload, and test representative target pages; the AWS scheduling references establish how Scheduler invokes Lambda, not browser compatibility or a universally suitable browser package.

Use predictable S3 object keys

For a historical record of every run, include the site identifier and a UTC timestamp in each key, for example site-id/2026/10/04/13-30-00Z.png. UTC avoids daylight-saving ambiguity. The naming convention is an implementation choice, not an AWS requirement. Do not put credentials, account identifiers, or other sensitive values into object names.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black

If consumers need one stable “latest” location, use a fixed key only deliberately: each successful run will overwrite the previous current object. S3 Versioning can preserve prior versions for recovery, but those versions continue to consume storage until removed by an appropriate lifecycle action.

Separate the two IAM roles

Use separate roles for Scheduler and Lambda. The Scheduler execution role needs permission to invoke the selected target. The Lambda execution role grants the function access to AWS resources; scope it to only the required S3 upload operations and bucket/key area, plus the logging permissions it needs. AWS describes Lambda execution roles and task-specific access policies in its Lambda and S3 tutorial.

  • Scheduler role: allow invocation of the intended Lambda target, not unrelated functions.
  • Lambda role: allow only the required writes to the designated bucket or prefix and required logging. Add read permissions only if the implementation actually needs them.
  • Bucket access: keep the bucket private and give reviewers authenticated, scoped access. Avoid public-read access as a shortcut.

Protect screenshot contents

A screenshot can contain account data, unpublished content, or personal information, even when the source URL appears public. Restrict access independently of encryption. AWS says S3 applies server-side encryption with S3 managed keys (SSE-S3) to new object uploads by default; AWS dates the start of that behavior to January 5, 2023. See Amazon S3 default encryption.

Configure retries and detect missed captures

Scheduler invokes Lambda asynchronously. Set retry limits and failed-event retention to match the recovery window you need, and configure a dead-letter queue if failed events must be inspected or replayed. AWS documents checking CloudWatch logs to confirm Scheduler invoked the function, but invocation alone does not prove that a valid image was rendered or saved. See Invoke a Lambda function on a schedule.

Emit structured logs for each run with the site identifier, requested URL, capture time, render outcome, and S3 upload outcome. For operationally important screenshots, alert on failed captures and on a last-success timestamp that becomes stale. Track render success and S3 write success separately so a page failure is not mistaken for a storage failure.

For an optional downstream workflow, S3 can deliver supported events to EventBridge—for example, after an object is written. AWS says no additional S3 permission is needed simply to deliver events to EventBridge. This is not required to schedule captures. See Amazon S3 EventBridge delivery.

Set retention and understand deletion

Use S3 Lifecycle rules to transition older objects to another storage class or expire them after a chosen age. Lifecycle rules apply to existing objects as well as future uploads. Check transition request costs and any minimum storage-duration implications for the classes you select; current prices depend on the deployment’s Region, cadence, and storage choices. See Managing your storage lifecycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a versioned bucket, expiring a current object may create a delete marker rather than remove older object versions. To permanently remove screenshot bytes after the retention period, add a noncurrent-version expiration action and account for delete markers as needed. Lifecycle actions are asynchronous, so deletion may not happen immediately. See Troubleshooting S3 Lifecycle.

Or skip the browser setup

Instead of packaging and maintaining a browser in Lambda, call ScreenshotNeo from the scheduled function and upload the response bytes to S3. For example, this Python handler uses the supplied API request pattern, stores each response under a UTC timestamped key, and expects the function role to have S3 write permission. Set SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY and SCREENSHOT_BUCKET as protected Lambda configuration values, not in the schedule payload.

import os
from datetime import datetime, timezone
from urllib.parse import urlparse

import boto3
import requests

s3 = boto3.client("s3")

def lambda_handler(event, context):
    site_id = event["site_id"]
    url = event["url"]
    bucket = os.environ["SCREENSHOT_BUCKET"]
    access_key = os.environ["SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY"]

    response = requests.get(
        "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
        params={"access_key": access_key, "url": url},
        timeout=90,
    )
    response.raise_for_status()

    captured_at = datetime.now(timezone.utc)
    key = f"{site_id}/{captured_at:%Y/%m/%d/%H-%M-%SZ}.webp"
    s3.put_object(
        Bucket=bucket,
        Key=key,
        Body=response.content,
        ContentType="image/webp",
    )

    print({
        "site_id": site_id,
        "url": url,
        "captured_at": captured_at.isoformat(),
        "render_result": "response_received",
        "s3_result": "uploaded",
        "bucket": bucket,
        "key": key,
    })
    return {"bucket": bucket, "key": key}

Package the Python dependencies with the Lambda deployment or an appropriate layer, and test that the function’s response handling, timeout, and S3 permissions work in your configuration. ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation covers the request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Troubleshoot common failures

  • No Lambda invocation appears: verify that the schedule is enabled, its target is the intended function, and the Scheduler execution role can invoke it. Check the schedule configuration and CloudWatch logs.
  • Invocation occurred but no object exists: inspect function logs for render and upload outcomes. Confirm the Lambda role permits the required write to the correct bucket and key prefix, and verify the function is using the intended bucket and site configuration.
  • Image is blank, incomplete, or inconsistent: check page load timing, required interactions, viewport/full-page choice, and whether the rendering runtime supports the page. Test representative pages in the deployed runtime rather than assuming local browser behavior will match.
  • Runs fail on slow pages: review the function timeout and the renderer’s own wait conditions. Set realistic limits and log timeouts distinctly from upload errors.
  • Old images remain after expiration: check the Lifecycle rule scope and timing. On versioned buckets, add noncurrent-version expiration if old versions must be removed; Lifecycle execution is asynchronous.

Cost and operational trade-offs

Estimate the complete workflow rather than only the scheduler: scheduled invocations, Lambda compute, S3 storage and requests, any transitions or retrievals, and—if used—KMS charges. The cost depends on capture frequency, page render duration, image size, retention, Region, and recovery/versioning choices. The AWS sources cited here do not establish a dollar estimate for a particular workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser rendering offers direct control over browser behavior but adds packaging and compatibility work. A screenshot API avoids managing the browser runtime in the function, while adding an external service dependency and API credential to protect. In either design, retries should be chosen with care: a repeated run can create another historical object unless the key strategy intentionally makes retries idempotent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use one schedule for every website?

Use separate schedules when sites need different cadences or execution settings; group sites only when their timing and operational requirements are compatible.

Does a Scheduler invocation prove the screenshot was saved?

No. Confirm the function’s render result and S3 upload result independently; invocation logs alone establish only that the function was called.

Can S3 Lifecycle remove old screenshot versions too?

Yes, but a versioned bucket generally needs a noncurrent-version expiration action in addition to current-object expiration when the goal is to delete prior bytes.
