How to Make a Random Song Playlist for a 24/7 YouTube Radio Channel

To run a changing song playlist as a 24/7 YouTube radio channel, clear the music for livestream use, put the tracks into a shuffle-capable playback source, route that audio and a visual scene through an encoder such as OBS, and send the continuous broadcast to YouTube Live. The playback source makes the playlist; the encoder and a continuously available computer or hosted service keep it on air.

What you need for an always-on radio stream

A YouTube radio stream is a live video broadcast whose audio is your playlist. The basic setup has three parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Cleared music: recordings you own or have permission to use in a livestream.
  • Playlist playback: a player or file-based setup that can shuffle the tracks.
  • Continuous encoder: software such as OBS that combines the audio with a static image or visual loop and sends it to YouTube Live.

For a 24/7 channel, the playback source, encoder, and internet connection must remain available. With a self-hosted setup, that means keeping the computer running and connected. OBS provides basic setup guidance and an Auto-Configuration Wizard through its Help Portal.

Clear the music before building the playlist

Use tracks you own or have licensed for the specific use of a YouTube livestream. A regular consumer music subscription should not be assumed to grant broadcast rights. Keep written permission and check whether the rights owner requires your channel to be added to a Content ID allowlist.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If protected material is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated. A track can trigger a disruption even when you have a license if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends.

YouTube for Artists advises creators planning to use copyright-protected music to coordinate with their label or distributor. A license and Content ID allowlisting are separate considerations: permission to use a recording does not itself ensure that YouTube’s systems will recognize that permission during a live broadcast. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and YouTube for Artists’ live-stream guidance before launch.

Prepare a playlist that can shuffle

  1. Collect only cleared tracks. Store the approved audio files or add the tracks to a controlled playlist. Keep a record of each track’s rights and any allowlisting requirements.
  2. Choose a playback method with shuffle. Set it to continue playing through the intended playlist and verify what happens at the end of the queue. Exact controls differ by player, so check that tool’s current instructions rather than assuming a particular OBS button or menu.
  3. Decide what “random” should mean. Shuffle may allow a track to repeat before every other track has played. If avoiding early repeats matters, test the player’s actual behavior; a no-repeat or weighted-random algorithm is not guaranteed by the basic setup.
  4. Prepare the visual. Use a static image or visual loop appropriate to the channel, then confirm that it remains visible while the playlist changes tracks.

Connect the playlist to OBS and YouTube Live

  1. Check YouTube live access in advance. YouTube for Artists says to enable live streams by verifying the account at least 24 hours before going live. Its current guidance describes the route as Create, Go live, Enable, then phone-number verification; interface labels can change, so follow the current YouTube for Artists instructions.
  2. Make the OBS scene. Add the visual and route the playlist player’s audio into OBS. Confirm that the audio meter responds and that the intended scene is what will be sent to the live stream.
  3. Set the YouTube destination. Create or schedule the live broadcast in YouTube Studio, obtain the stream key, and enter the destination details in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
  4. Configure and inspect the encoder. Use OBS’s setup guidance or Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. The appropriate output settings depend on your connection and intended stream quality; do not select a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain.
  5. Run an unlisted test. YouTube for Artists specifically recommends an unlisted test before high-production or high-investment streams. Check audio, picture, playlist transitions, YouTube’s live status, and what happens if playback or the network is interrupted.
  6. Start the public broadcast and monitor it. Keep the playback source and encoder running, and watch both YouTube’s stream status and OBS’s connection/frame indicators.

OBS notes that a rising dropped-frames counter, alongside a yellow or red connection indicator, can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. Use the OBS Help Portal for its connection troubleshooting guidance and basic settings help.

Plan for continuity, not just a successful start

A stream that starts correctly can still stop later if the playback source, encoder, computer, power, or internet connection fails. With OBS on your own machine, you are responsible for keeping that environment available and monitoring it. Test the full run before promoting the channel, including track changes and connection interruptions; do not assume an unattended setup will restart itself unless you have separately configured and verified that behavior.

Also consider how YouTube classifies the channel’s content. If a stream is marked made for kids, YouTube lists features affected by that designation, including live chat, chat replay, comments on archives or upcoming streams, reminders, and personalized ads. Review YouTube’s guidance on restrictions for live streaming and classify content accurately.
